What happened to MOM?

Milk of magnesia used to be the star of our medpass but it's slowly been replaced with Miralax. Not sure if it's been replaced because of taste, efficiency or marketing...

I think there are fewer side effects and potential drug interactions with Miralax vs MOM

We have almost no-one on regularly scheduled MOM, but many residents have regularly scheduled miralax. If there's been no BM in three days, MOM is the go-to med at that point.

And yes, everyone hates the MOM, while the miralax is generally unnoticed in the drinks from the med pass.

We rarely use MoM, it's not even on our house standing orders. Too many renal patients who you can screw up electrolytes on.

If I had a nickel for every colace I've given I wouldn't have to work! lol.

Unfortunately, colace just softens the BM, rather than stimulates one to happen much sooner. MOM and miralax, if effective, would hopefully give a BM that day. Quite honestly, though, I've noticed my patients tend to need a suppository to get results.

As for MOM, we still have it, but I've noticed it only gets given when the patients request it specifically. Miralax is preferred by the MDs otherwise.

Our MD has changed all Colace to senekot. We also use peglyte and Lactulose as daily bowel meds. We also use fibre rite. MOM is my go to PRN bowel meds, followed by a dulcolx supp if ineffective.
