Several years ago we had an elderly intubated woman admitted from the ER. She had resp. distress at home and ended up vented. They brought her up to us minus her post intubation film so x-ray came up and did one. After, they sent the film to us. As we stood there looking at it I said Ooops, guess whoever tubed her put her teeth on her chest. Into the patients room I go and pull back the top of her gown and whala, no teeth! Apparently her resp. distress was caused by swallowing her uppers! Poor thing needed surgery to remove them, the bronch was unsuccessful.

moon, we have a surgeon that shouldn't go within 10 feet of the nearest or!!! well, he did some sort of abd surgery on this guy and couldn't close him, but the kicker is....his intestines came up in our see thru hospital bags that have our logo on them?!?! unfortunately, this guy didn't make it either. :o

At the hospital where I used to work, there was a surgeon like that-- HORRIBLE! :( --and we nurses all discussed getting tattoos on our chests that'd say "NO DR. _________" in case he was manning the ED some night when we'd be brought there unconscious.

Yeah we used to have a surgeon who would put an x-ray up on the viewbox upside down and backwards and stand there looking like he knew what he was doing!! There are far too many scary doctors out there!

I don't know about you guys, but I have always found it amazing that no matter how bad a surgeon/MD is, there are always patients that swear by him as though he is the best thing in medicine.

Recently, a doctor that was widely regarded as the worst MD in the area died. A whole slew of former patients wrote letters to the local paper about how wonderful he was and the obit made him sound like nobel prize candidate.

Caroladybelle you are sooooo right about that!!! The absolute worst have a loyal following and also are usually very arrogant! What is the deal with that?????

I think the freakiest thing I have seen to date was when I worked in an assisted living facility on the AM shift. We went to check on a very independant woman who didnt show up for breakfast and found her dead in her room. She had a heart attack in the middle of the night as she was getting back in bed. The freaky part was that she fell over and fell between the bed table and the bed and was folded up. Ugly just ugly. Her eyes and mouth were open. She had been dead about 4-6 hours. Cold but pliable. Well she was my first post mortem care and I was so glad that she was a VERY CLEAN woman and the care was minimal. We couldnt get her mouth closed and my eyes just kept gravitating to that gaping hole. Well after we had rolled and dressed her (yes she was buck naked) a big and I mean BIG spit bubble appeared before my eyes and burst. I freaked and ran. I guess the stress of it all just climaxed at that point.

Had a pt in the ICU once...long hx of IV drug abuse, diabetes, renal failure, etc...she had one old AKA, and a new one. Apparently the necrosis involved not only the lower leg, but also up in the thigh and into the lower back. All the skin had been removed, with bare muscle open to air. Her lower back, buttock, and thigh were all like that...and then end of her femur bone stuck out below where the muscle ended.

What a dressing change that was...yuck!

About 10 years ago, I was working on a Skilled nursing floor as a CNA and we got this male patient from the main hospital who had had Prostate ca. They had had to remove EVERYTHING. Including the member and the surgical site was too large for them to close so they just left this HUGE hole for us to have to pack with gauze. Of course, he had to have a catheter but I don't know how they knew where to insert it. OH, and in report before we got him, they told us that he was completely bedridden. Imagine our surprise when we found him walking down the hall, cath bag dragging behind him on the floor. When questioned, he stated that he was headed for the VFW to get a beer. Also, this was the first time I saw a doctor's order for "one can beer twice daily".

have any of you ever seen an intubation gone bad..and i mean real bad? we had an od arrive in the er via 911. medics were unable to intubate, but she was holding her own real well w/ambu and o2. md nicked the trachea. first noticed swelling on the neck slowly spreading, to her lips, face, eyelids...they were slowly becominghuge. then her chest and breasts, it actually looked as though she were being blown up like a life raft. i truly thought she would explode and guts would hit the cieling. sadly we lost her, she was young and very viable when she arrived in the er. :eek:lr

Had apatient who had a pneumo that wouldn't seal , and was on a ventilator. He had subq emphysema everywhere, looked like the Michelin man. No matter where you touched him, it felt like rice crispies. He got better eventually.

While doing post-mortum care on a pt who had a bowel obst. This pt was being treated without use of ng, was npo. When I turned him over a low umpff and large gush of gastric fluid goes spilling out all over bed, floor and co-worker. Fluid was yellow, green and brown., mostl brown. Fortunatly for myself I was prepared when he turned my way and avoided the rest of the emptying process. Never seen so much contects coming out. Only time I have witnesssed this in ten yrs. Hopefully never again.

priapism---and the tx. Uro took 1:10000 epi and shot in both sides of the member. Made me hurt to watch--poor guy had been suffering for hours and hours I guess.
