What is the deal w/ this stupid hospital?

Two weeks ago, I got a full color, glossy nurse recruiting flyer and letter in the mail from a hospital in a nearby town.

The flyer had a photo of a woman doing a back-bend and said "We're bending over backwards to hire YOU.

$10,000, sign-on bonus for RNs! Great new nurse to pt ratios!"

They even included a fake check for $10,000. made out to "Florence Nightingale, RN".

I called (the day I got the letter)and left a message saying that I got their mailer, and I wanted to know more about the new staffing ratios.

I didn't get a return call in a week's time, so I called them again.

They called back and left a message on my machine saying "Sorry, but we're currently in a nursing hiring freeze. If you'd like to fill out an application, it will remain in our files for 6 months, and if...blah blah blah"

Why the hell did they send out those recruitment letters?

No matter if they're hring or not, I know I don't want to work for any hospital that is that confused!:(

That's horrible, but not surprising I guess, given some of hte other things management has pulled.

As for why they do it, I think all of you are right and have some good ideas. I know personally, having worked in HR and recruiting in IT, a lot of times HR does not know what management or the rest of the company is doing, and vice versa. I remember once an IT professional was hired by my company and he quit his previous job, giving 2 weeks notice. We flew him into our HQ's from wherever it was he lived so that he could sign his employment contract, get signed up for Health Insurance, Benefits, etc. He had been in the office about 2 hours when a manager found out that we were hiring him and said that we really didn't need him and so they withdrew their offer and sent him back home.

Moral of the story, management is messed up.

I looked on the internet about this type of thing and haven't really found too much helpful info. Most of the Press Companies/Newspapers state "Employment advertising must be for a bona fide offering and must state the nature of the work offerered."

I went and talked to someone in HR and just asked the question (I'm not currently working in a hospital setting right now, so I don't know if hospitals are different) but she said that some companies already have someone in mind that they want to hire for a certain position. Because of the Equal Opportunity Laws, they still have to advertise the opening....they can't just hire someone without having the job posted...they have to show that everyonhas the "Opportunity" to apply.

Then people apply for a position that has already been filled and no one is usually the wiser because if someone calls and asks about it, they will just say that the position has already been filled........

That happens a lot in Education only they will (and have to) go so far as to interview lots of people for a position.

I once interviewed at a school that would interview teachers in groups of two or three at the same time. It was like a Miss America Contest minus the silence booth. And I told them that!

Had a similar event happen in my hospital. Big recruiting push, big sign-on bonuses, big ads all over the place. Then a major admitter (MD) left and we lost a major insurance provider in the same week. Hiring freeze happend the following week. Sometimes, sh*t happens and you just have to deal with it. We did let all the applicants know what and why and kept their applications in the active file until the freeze was over.

I got took one time. Applied for a nursing faculty position. I talked with the department head (phone interview), and she said that she would need 2 letters of reference mailed to her. The she said, "send the letters only if you're really interested in the position." The actual interpretation of this was...."the position has already been taken by someone inside. We advertised because we had to."

That money comes out of what we pay for Medicare, Medicaid, insurance money, and individuals who pay their own bills.

Some of the insurance is paid by tax money too such as police, civil servants, firefighters, teachers, politicians and their staffs, the FBI employees, DMV, and so on.

It is supposed to be for patient care!

The hospitals aren't stupid.

We nurses are stupid.

Nearly every industry in America has shut down and moved to another country in the past 25 years.

The ones that haven't shut down are pale images of what they once were.

Automobile manufacturing, the steel industry, textiles (cloth and clothing), oil drilling and refining, mining, manufacturing , and shipping. (90 % of all ships that haul stuff to and from America are now licensed in foreign countries.)

We nurses are in the only industry left that CANNOT BE EXPORTED.

We have more power than the teamsters ever dreamed of,

but we are too stupid to use it.

If we organized , we would have nothing to lose.

They can't ship our jobs to Guatemala, Mexico, and China for cheaper labor.

Stupid nurses.

But they are getting cheap labor from China, India, the Phillippines. I really think that's the long term plan.

Complain about the nursing shortage but do nothing to change the work environment. And then bring in as many foreign nurses as needed because they "can't" find any American ones.

The foreign nurses will be paid less, won't complain about the change in OT laws...it will be nirvana for the hospitals. And the nurses won't complain for a while because the pay will be far greater than anything they'd make at home, they'll be bound by contracts of several years, and so on.:o :( :devil:

I think that by posting a want ad in the newspaper, hospitals can use this as an arguement in the event of legal action against them. They have made a public statement that they are attempting to hire enough nurses."Gosh, there is a terrible nursing shortage and we're doing everything we can to recruit and hire nurses."

Rather than working on retention, improved workplace

conditions, etc.
