What day does 3rd shift start?

Published

I've never worked third shift, so this might seem like a really really dumb question. :-)

I've been working first shift for the past month, but switch to the 7pm to 7am shift in a couple days. I'm scheduled November 4th (Monday) from 7p-7a. I assume I go in Monday night at 7p. Is this correct?

Somebody (not a hospital worker) has me worrying that they might mean I go in on Sunday at 7pm since I'll be working over half the shift on Monday (after midnight). That doesn't sound right to me, but thought I would get your opinion.

Thanks :-)

You go on Monday the 4th at 7pm.

no, everywhere I know of, Monday 7pm to 7am means you go in on Monday.

Try working third shift on a night when daylights savings time changes. I think my charting last night was sucked into another dimension where time has no meaning...

Make certain to clarify this with your employer. Sometimes how the schedule is written is interpreted differently.

Every place I've worked, Monday at 7pm means exactly that - Monday at 7pm.

I would definitely clarify this with your scheduler...but in my experience, if they say Monday 7p-7a, you show up Monday at 1900 and leave Tuesday at 0700.

Definitely clarify it with your scheduler. I've worked places where it meant coming in the night before and getting off the day of. My current employer does it to mean you come in the night of and get off the next morning.

So I've seen it both ways.

If you're scheduled to work Monday from 7:00pm to 7:00am, you typically report to work on Monday at 7:00pm and the shift normally ends on Tuesday at 7:00am.

I had this question when I first started nights too. I'd definitely double check with someone in the know at your work, but it meant it started that night at 7pm to me too. This was made more confusing by the fact that where I work to have counted as working a holiday you need to work the night going into that holiday, because as you acknowledged, that's the official date most of your hours are on.

It is the day on your calender schedule print out. If it is Monday you go in Monday night.

Clarify with your scheduler. It doesn't matter how random people on the internet do it at their workplace.
