What a coincidence. . .every single student nurse who shadows me. . .

Published

wants to ONLY work NICU or be a trauma flight nurse, but only for two years because then they want to get either their CRNA or FNP before 2015 because there is no way they are getting a doctorate!!

EVERY. SINGLE. STUDENT.

Sigh. . .

Why not go to medical school instead?

4 years undergrad + 4 years medical school + 4 years residency + 1-3 years fellowship.

Or.

4 years undergrad + 3 years CRNA program.

Also, one requires medical school and one doesn't. Some people don't want to go to medical school.

Wow! Nurses can do more than bed side care. Jeez. Is it a crime if bed side care is not what you want to do.

What about nurses that go right into imformatics? They are not real nurses?

A friend of mine had a bs in biology, went right into research after getting her lvn? She isn't worthy of having a license now?

I think you might be getting angry at the wrong person. Or possibly quoting the wrong person. Not sure which.

Well, first, I'm not angry. :-). I'm not here to attack anyone, even if we disagree. Ok? And Secondly, I dont think that you and I disagree. I agree with your point of view. I thought your points were valid, and right on point.

Well, except for me being "Angry." So, I'm sorry you misunderstood, and I certainly hope you have a good night. Ok. Alright...

You do seem a little feisty on this issue. No one is saying xyz isn't real nursing what they are saying if you are going to school for nursing you should probably actually want to BE a nurse of some kind as the odds of entering nursing solely to get into an expanded or non nursing role ( I consider NP and CRNA non nursing roles because they are so different than the standard nurse role ) is not in favor of you achieving your role and if people are going to nursing school and then leaving nursing it is a waste of resources. Why not go to PA school instead?

Nooooooo. I thought you misquoted earlier with the chicky who wanted to point out that CRNA is a significantly faster route to being a mini-doctor than, y'know, medical school versus my reply w/snide remarks about nursing vs. being a nurse.

We could just be crossing signals. I've had waaaaaay too much Benadryl tonight guys.

Honestly even though Nurse is in the title CRNA school should probably be more intergrated. Back home med school is like that you enter from highschool and the whole program is 7 years

Quote from Hygiene Queen:

Holy cow! Yes!LOL!!What on earth inspired all the marine-biologist wannabes!

Because we grew up watching The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, of course!

My inspiration was more like Flipper and The Incredible Mr Limpet, but I've always been fond of giant cephalopods. Our coastal California tide pools are endlessly fascinating, too. My stepsister actually got a degree in "marine ecology". She got to go hang with the manatees on San Miguel Island off the coast here, and that was pretty much it. She's a clinical psychologist now.

People that enter nursing school with the goal of immediately continuing on to a non nursing or expanded nursing role are forced into going through nursing school first to enter that position. The only way to become a CRNA or NP is to become a nurse first. Does that mean that every CRNA or NP should actually be someone who entered nursing school with the dream of being a bedside nurse who later changed their mind and decided that they wanted to grow professionally and become an advanced practice nurse? As for going to PA school instead, there are advantages to being an NP or CRNA as opposed to a PA or AA, one of which being a slight difference in pay another being a difference in level of autonomy, especially CRNA vs AA. I have an idea to fix the problem, direct entry into NP or CRNA programs. That way these students don't waste the time of preceptors in areas that they have no interest in, the resources of nursing schools that they are only using for a stepping stone, and their own time and money to learn about areas of nursing that well be a step above useless to them in their terminal career.

I definitely can relate. I honestly think it has a lot to do with the fact that there are so many advertisements from nursing schools recruiting anybody to become a nurse. Unfortunately, the economy has forced people into the nursing profession because of the job security and I honestly believe from experience that every one should not be a nurse if their heart isn't in it. People have their view of nursing based off what their ideas of nursing are and I believe that most wouldn't have pursued nursing if they had known they had to suffer through building experience in med-surg first. I can relate because I knew going into nursing school and even when I was a young child that I wanted to be involved with labor and delivery. That specialty is over crowded to me and I don't want to give up on a dream but I want to be realistic. I am trying to be more open but I do know that since I've had experience in other specialties besides L&D. I still would like to do that specialty. I went off on a tangent and I was all over the place but I figured someone could relate
