What do you do in clinicals?

Published

Hi - I'm thinking about being an RN and I'm a little uneasy about the clinicals even though I have no idea what I would be doing there. What exactly do you do in clinicals?

kmcnelly, which palm do you have and where did you get the references (tabers, etc) Thanks..for sharing

Palm T/X. I got it at staples for 314. You can get it off ebay for about 180, but I didn't want to wait. I got the Nursing Constellation and Tabers off of Skyscape.com for 130 dollars. Nursing constellation has the davis drug guide in it. The palm comes with a cd that has the programs you need to edit word documents. I put my notes on there and study when I have the palm but don't have my bookbag. Good luck! Let me know what you decide.

not only do we hide from the instructors, we try to look very busy when we are in their sight. hopefully you'll get a stroked out patient thats real low gcs and unresponsive so you can hang out in their room and watch tv...

take some advice from an old nurse. you are the kind of student every nursing instructor loves to hunt and destroy. take advantage of your clinicals, you are there to learn. do realize how many nurses are on the floor wishing they had time to care for pt's the way you have the time to do. you are the kind of nurse student we "old" nurses love to eat alive. remember, you will be singning your name as rn one day, you will be the one that the lawers will be calling if somthing is wrong. they won't be calling your instructor. besides that, the bigger picture is that, the pt with a low gcs needs care as well. that care can include touch, skin care etc. you can even read to them for heaven sakes.

Specializes in ER; HBOT- lots others.

great topic!! i love clinicals, but at first with a new instructor it is a little nervewracking. i do everything i can, keep myself busy, and if my pt's are taking care of, i make sure that i am asking other nurses or other students if there is anything i can do for them. you get into a groove after like 2 weeks how things flow and stuff. there is always at least one student that takes up more of the instructor times, well heck, we all love that, but also after the verbal quizzing- you feel either great or like crap. i like to know know know my stuff before i go to clinicals. ie: meds, what they do, why they take 'em; what disease they have ect ect.. but now, being in 3rd semester i do believe that we do not get any pt information until we get there that morning so we have to be fully prepared with everything we have learned in our core classes. so i have to be prepared for everything. there are others that just "know it all" or do stupid things and that makes me feel like i have to be even more on for that day, so i am not putting off the instructor. i admit, i am nervous about doing certain things because we do not have the opprotunity to do most of our skills in "real life" and i sure as heck am nervous for the pt!! lol..but thats how we are learn and most, i say most, pt's understand. with all that said, you really have to know your stuff. and you have to want and love being in this field, or it wont work.

That's wounderful. I can just picture it. You are the kind of nurse I would want for one of my loved ones. :rotfl: Love to walk in room and see this student sitting watching TV some day... I can find all kinds of jobs that need done , some not so pleasant....but necessary, I usually find these kinds of jobs make , wounderful learning experiences.

Specializes in Med/surg,Tele,PACU,ER,ICU,LTAC,HH,Neuro.

I worked 7P to 7am for years. I loved those nursing students who come in at 4am wet from a shower and all stressed out to sit and read their assigned patients charts at 4am. It is always a good time to ask nurses things to cause chart checks are usually done and it is the lul period till about 5:30am.
