What is in your clinical bag?

Published

So far I have binder, clipboard, stethoscope, two books for care plans and nandas, a little flip book on diagnostic tests, a clinical component to my med-surg book, hand sanitizer, trauma shears, and ipad for drug book and medscape reference (stored in our meeting room). Oh and my planner will be with me at all times :). I have a watch as well.

As far as I know our hospital will provide everything minus stethoscope.

holy crap, are you serious? Are you going to sit in the nursing station or actually work with patients?

My clinical bag = shears, stethoscope, black pen and watch and I did just fine.

I kept my paperwork in a pocket in my pants

Well don't have a clinical bag cause no place to keep it at clinical sites but what I carry in pocket organizer is 4 color pen, penlight, small notepad, curved forceps, sharpie, change for vending machine, scope in holder and scissors...pocket organizer fits perfectly in scrub pants pockets.

No just for reference, if I'm stuck on thinking of a nanda and can ask my instructor for help so my care plan can turn out to be good. Most of this will be used at home as I type my care plan so I don't misplace it later (as I commute). I have to have 5 or more references for care plans.

Id feel pretty ripped off if I had enough time to sit around worrying about nanda diagnoses every week. Ive never once had to recite any to the nurse I was working with.

That aside....pen, penlight, scissors, phone for epocrates/micromedex, tiny notepad. Never needed more, and it all goes in my pocket.

I have a binder with my printed off paperwork I have to complete.

My nursing care plan book, drug book and lab book. Sometimes my med surg book if the clinical instructor says we will have down time to study.

Stethoscope, pen light, watch, lots of pens.

I keep a post-it note pad in my pocket for VS and report.

I have a clipboard that I carry with me with my pt. info and any paperwork I will need to fill out during the shift.

I always like to bring more, because you never know when you will need it. I have always had a place to put my stuff during clinical.

In my pockets I carry two pens, penlight, stethoscope, a pocket sized notebook, a cleaning cloth for my glasses, a small tube of hand lotion and a Chapstick because I get incredibly dry in the hospitals, my drivers license and debit card and car key (I don't take my purse). In my bag I bring a spiral notebook and my folder for post-clinical conference (a requirement), and my lunch and a water bottle.

I usually have a clipboard, notebook, folder, stethoscope, pen light, extra pens/pencils, bandage scissors, and a med book. Some of my classmates bring their care plan books and whatnot if we have time to work much on paperwork, but I honestly focus better on that at home... at least for the care plan part, everything else I have done when I leave.

Care plans never get used in nursing by the way, when a patient gets discharged you click some education boxes and stuff prints out that you hand to them and ask if they have questions.

As a nurse I have my stethoscope on a hip clip, couple pens, watch, trauma shears, and a small pocket clinical guide. I probably should have a penlight (Ill find one if I need it for neuro checks and or eye problems) but as you will learn daily assessments usually become focused ones and head to toe isn't always as efficient.

I have a folder/clipboard thing for my brain (and I keep a list of NANDA diagnoses and some other notes in there), 2 pairs of curved hemostats, tape, shears, pens, a pen light, stethoscope, hand lotion, watch, and my phone for Epocrates (allowed for us).

I also pick up IV plugs, flushes, and alcohol pads, since I need them all the time.

All of this stuff gets stashed in my pockets. No bag needed.

I like having the NANDA diagnoses, because we had to write up reports based on nursing diagnoses, so I wanted to think about that stuff while caring for the patient. It also allowed me to discuss the diagnoses with my instructor and get her feedback.

I know, the computers get used very little where I work in the hospital minus when they look up orders and type up notes, I&O, checks, etc. All this added stress for nothing.

That's a whole lot of things you won't be using!

Cardex and any papers kept in pockets, stethoscope, watch, pen, scissors... All that's needed. !
