What would you change about nursing or the healthcare system if you could?

Charge appropriately for professional nursing services. Discontinue the universal practice of lumping nursing services in with toilet paper, food service, dressing supplies and housekeeping.

That (not so) simple step would accomplish amazing things.

Love this! It would cut down on a lot of the nonsense we have to endure.

Do a time-management study on actual nurses...focus on how much time they must waste on duplicate charting, getting food trays sent, emptying trash, changing beds...and DO SOMETHING about it.

Most of us don't mind doing nursing work-we mind all the extra stuff that PREVENTS us from doing it.

Also, I may be in a minority on this but I like 8-hour days, not 12 hours.

^^^Yeah, I actually like working less days...I'll keep the 12's...just tweak the other things so we can continue to our work more effectively.

1) Mandated (safe) ratios everywhere

2) Substantial budget authority for a committee from each floor to ensure proper equipment

3) Some autonomy with simple things like certain labs/meds

Get rid of this Studor group Bull Puckey. and you know what I mean :-(

Off the top of my head:

1. Needs of the pts are put above financial gains of shareholders

2. Absenteeism/tardiness policies actually enforced

3. Bullying/drama strictly NOT tolerated

4. Rules apply to everyone equally

5. Adequate staffing

Mandated ratios.

Charge for nursing services (which actually might negate the need for ratios.)

Return to patient care instead of customer service.

Is this a homework question???? What do you think needs to be changed? I agree with

The ability to stand up for ourselves and to have a strong national voice.

I sometimes feel like I am powerless in my role, yet I am responsible for everything that goes wrong. I wish nurses were more empowered.

Specializes in Geriatric/Sub Acute, Home Care.

I would simplify everything. I would promote more Wellness programs to help keep the population healthy and prevent diseases/illnesses from occuring before they start. I would eliminate Nursing Homes and have people properly taken care of IN THEIR HOMES where they belong if feasible. And I am a LTC nurse. PAPERWORK would be severely eliminated step by step and promote more patient interaction between healthcare professionals and their patients. Encourage More alternative methods such as massage, relaxation techniques, briofeed back as a added addition to getting and keeping well. COMMUNICATION would be my ulimate goal correcting. I find communication between health care professionals sometimes dangerous due to language barriers and other numerous interuptions when dealing with patients and families. Humans dont need to be more stressed out during a very stressful event already, I find doctors offices cold, unwelcoming, too fast paced, incredibly stressful with tvs blaring news stories/or day courts. NO TVS in doctors offices. I have too much to mention here..
