I am debating whether to get a furnished or unfurnished apartment. Seems easier to get furnished of course, but the difference in rent is over $600/month. I understand about picking up some cups and plates at the Goodwill, but what about furniture?
I would be on the 3rd floor apartment so picking up a chair and bed would not be easy. Nor would other conveniences like a nightstand or kitchen table. I don't need much, but I do need some things!
What do you bring? What do you purchase? And what do you do about furniture if you don't get a furnished place?
Thanks!

In many places, furnished apartments and houses cost less, not more. Certainly not $600 more. If you are seeing that much difference, it is for corporate housing which includes everything at short term pricing. Linen, pots, dishes, TV, cable, electricity and so on. Where I am right now, you can get a nice one bedroom for $700/800 unfurnished or a small one bedroom corporate for $1,500.
In this same market, I can get a furnished house for $1,200.

I once slept on a inflatable mattress-the higher quality type, it had an electric inflated/deflated and probably got around 3ft high. Twin size. To make it more comfortable, I bought a memory-foam overlay. I threw the foam on, then sheets and it was VERY VERY Very comfortable.
Aside from the air-mattress, I had 2 plastic drawers for toiletries, hair dryer, makeup, etc. A few hangers for my uniforms, and 2 large backpacks for clothes, undies, socks.
^ the best 10 months of my life - very simple, yet very comfortable. And Moving was very easy!
The air mattress sounds like it could work. Easily portable at least. And I like simple.
The quotes I got were at a TX apartment. Furnished did include everything except cable/internet.
If u go the air mattress route, I highly suggest a memory foam overlay. Without the MF, it felt like cold plastic, even with a sheet. And a thicker MF will elevate the overall height as well.

That's what we've done before too - the MF helps a lot, and the combo seemed pretty comfortable.
