Hi has anyone taken the RN pre-licensure in Cali. Can someone please tell me how difficult the program is. Currently working fulltime and have not been in school for 10 years. Thanks
The shifts can be two in a row but usually not three. You must be very flexible and ready to work any days during the two or three week clinical rotation. I can't stress this enough. Not being available during this time frame causes nothing but frustration and stress. The shifts are typically non-negotiable.
My clinical instructors have been great. They really challenge you to know answers and be prepared. It's a little nerve-wracking at first and sometimes the constructive criticism stings, but I've come to appreciate all of it. It's my goal to be as prepared as possible to take the NCLEX and to be a great nurse, so I'm up for the challenges (I hope!). Others who just need a degree may feel differently.
Am so glad someone asked a question as all else I have seen on here is not on Pre-licensure.
Other than A/P, Micro Bio what other GE's does one need to start at WGU (Spanish, History, Music etc..) or are this needed before graduation.
Would you know of what other hospitals students go for their clinicals other than Cedar-Sinai
I'm curious and will be following this post as well- I'm going to be applying for the WGU pre-lic program as well. I'm in San Diego, but my options here are very expensive AccBSN or ADNs (as someone who already holds a Masters and several certificates) which don't interest me when WGU is a viable option.
I'm a little concerned about making the treks once clinical start but it is a sacrifice I'm willing to make. . .
Its hard to find info on the CA Pre-L Nursing program so i appreciate anyone who takes the time to disclose their experiences.
Donddon, take a look at WGU's website for the pre-requisites to the prelicensure nursing program. There is a very detailed list. They do have a very generous transfer policy in my opinion so if you have credits from another school, it's very helpful. Other clinical sites (at this time) are Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, and hospitals in Lakewood, Los Alamitos, and Fountain Valley.
EsJ87: I understand your concern about the drive. I live 80 miles way from Cedars but it works for me. I have stayed overnight nearby when I have two back to back shifts. We have one student from Northern California and she travels here for clinicals, orientations, and labs. It's tough but doable. I would suggest finding someone to stay with or a cheap hotel. The hard part is that the days aren't all consecutive. It just takes some juggling and planning.

I've been told that they try to take your location into account when assigning clinicals but they can't always accommodate. They might try to keep you at Mission Hospital which is in Mission Viejo. Not the best commute but definitely more doable than Cedars or Huntington Memorial.
Just curious if anyone knows if Healthcare experiences plays a big part in admissions process?
I have about 5 years in healthcare administration experiences, and have been a direct Case Manager for a health plan since 2014.
I was just promoted to a Transitions of Care coach working as a remote employee based from a large hospital as well.
Kinda hoping that helps me out in the app process since CA is soon darn competitive lol
EsJ87 Am in San Diego too, and hoping to attend WGU as this is the only option I have into a BSN being only bread weaner and provider of healthcare benefits for my family, I cant afford to not work. I hope when I apply I can get to a South OC hospital (I heard of one starting in mission viejo area).
SoonerBredExpat Thanks, I looked into it more, called and had Chat sessions with WGU and got all requirements. I am saving up for straighterline classes. I feel like I wasted a bunch of time doing Gen. ed in a community college that may not be credited. Bunch of Math and Eng classes that are not college level. I was just about to start on BIO 107 which is a pre-req for A/P, Micro. Now at straighterline I can just go into those courses without satisfying any other requirements. About $1100 should do it for Straighterline classes hoping to get into a BSN cohort early to mid 2017.
hi all is there a term break allowed in between? thanks.
I asked someone and she said that, There are no official breaks between terms but if you finish your classes early, you have the rest of the semester off. If you have an emergency, you can take 1-3 months off and they will try to join you with another cohort.
Hope this helps.
