Hello all,
Who else is applying to the MSN Entry level 2016? I've decided to create this thread as I have not seen any new threads for 2016 start date.
Can someone who has already attended EAOD and been offered an acceptance clarify something about the deposit for me. If we give our deposit that is essentially saying we are going to go to the program, correct? Is there any consequence, other than losing $500 buckaroonies, to changing our mind after paying the deposit and choosing a different program? My issue is that Western seems like a really great school and I have friends who have gone there and loved it, but location and cost wise it's just not my first choice. It seems like because I am going to EAOD next week and they may very well offer an early acceptance shortly there after I'm probably going to lose $500 if I make a deposit and end up getting in somewhere else (just had an interview for another program today).
Am I reading this situation right? Is it just a $500 deposit or am I signing some kind of binding contract saying I will definitely go there?
(please note, I do not take a $500 deposit lightly, I am terrified of losing that kind of money but even more terrified of not paying and then getting in no where. If offered, I will pay). Thoughts?
From what I can tell, the deposit goes into your tuition for the program. Schools essentially do this to encourage (or bait) students into committing into their school. Just the mere fact that you're feeling uneasy about it pretty much serves its purpose. I don't think there would be any consequence for changing your mind after making the deposit; however, from my experience as an admissions officer, if a student suddenly decides to back out of an offer, they're essentially placed in limbo if they decide to reapply later. That doesn't mean Western does this to their applicants, but this what I've seen before. Either way, you'll lose $500 to the program whether you go or not. There is no binding contract, and they're not going to hunt you down if you don't go to the school. You'll just lose your money.
I know $500 is a lot of money, but you need to decide if you are willing to take a risk. If you know for sure you can get into other programs (btw, what program is it?), then take the risk. For me, I would definitely do the deposit as a safeguard. $500 is a lot of money, but losing my seat from a decent school, and then risking the chance of not having a seat anywhere else seems to outweigh the financial hit. On top of that, if I didn't get into another program, I wouldn't like to compete against other highly qualified students the next go around. That's just me though.
From the January EAOD, how many applicants went to the event? It seems a little worrisome to have more than a few nearly locked into so few spots.
My guess is that if the cohort is for 60, and they get about 200 - 500 applications, they're most likely going to fill about 75% with top students (EAOD), and fill in the rest as alternates. The best students are still going to be the best students - that doesn't change.
By the way, for those who already accepted the offer, did you already complete your health assessment and financial aid application? How are you guys preparing for August?

I'm going to complete my health assessments next month :) & I completed my financial aid app in the beginning of January. If you haven't done that I would do it ASAP! Wbu?
I attended the Jan 21st EAOD. I just accepted the offer and paid the reservation fee of $500 today, so I guess I'm officially in the MSNE cohort #13. Anybody else already accepted the offer?!! This is it! Looking forward to meeting the rest of you. For those of you who are still going to the EAOD and going through interviews, here's wishing you the best!

To answer your question, the other program I have interviewed at is Cal State LA for their ABSN program. It's significantly closer to me, much less expensive, and highly ranked so it's definitely my first choice. Though Western seems really great too and my friend LOVED it.
I'm excited for tomorrow! Hope to see many of you there!
