WGU Prelicensure Nursing

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

I finally got accepted to start prelicensure nursing program Dec 1 2016. So excited! I have literally been waiting a year to get my pre reqs and for Texas board of Nursing to approve the program.

I will do my best to track my progress. Best of luck to any others in the DFW cohort for starting 2016/2017

Congrats !! I am so nervous but ready to get the classes started. Do you currently work as well as school? Is it doable? Sorry so many questions I am really curious. Good luck again

I'm finishing up my first semester now. 2 more classes. I am enjoying it and super excited to get into my actual CLINICAL classes this summer. The competency approach is a little unorthodox but it is working for me well so far. I've finished all my classes before the "soft " deadline they put in place.

There's a ton of support, not much to complain about now. I'm working my tail off.

thanks for the update! It's good to hear you are enjoying it!!! I can't wait until it my turn. I'm going to apply for the sept start

Sommer832 I am working full-time now. It is time consuming but doable forsure. I finished the Pre- Licensure Part of the program already. Semester ends May 31st! So I'm already getting started on a class for next semester.

What was the time line/ structure for your pre-licensure classes. For instance was it, how long did you have to complete the classes, how many classes did you have in the first term? Were you taking more than one at a time? Tell me more about the "soft" deadline please

Jaide06 I had a total of 15 Credits for my Pre-Licensure semester. depending on the class you have anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 weeks to finish a course. Pharmacology and BioChem were def the most challenging.

When I say "soft deadline" it means they have a projected date for you to complete the class to stay on course for graduation and to complete the semester in a timely manner. If you don't pass the class by the deadline you aren't really penalized but you risk being behind on your classes and may be taking more than one or two classes at once which can be overwhelming. Not completing a class by the deadline also is not a good look when trying to be accepted into the actual BSN program.

I took Biochem and Med Math at the same time. Most other classes overlapped by a couple days

Also, when you get to the actual nursing classes (basically the second semester) there will be something called a "hard stop". The hard stop is usually the middle of the semester. For example, the second semester usually consists of clinical nursing classes (CASAL I (Fundamentals), Physical Assessment, and CASAL II/Med Surg I) and non clinical nursing classes (Care of Older Adult, Professional Roles). The first half of the 2nd semester you'll have CASAL I and Physical Assessment and you need to pass these classes by mid semester (hard stop) in order to progress to CASALL II. If you do not pass these classes by mid semester, then you will go into modified progression and will need to realign with a different cohort pushing your graduation date later.

Thanks for the info

So before applying you must have all the prereq. done at a different school like a community college? How does the school work exactly?

How long did it take you to hear back from them?

How are things going there at so far?

I've been thinking about applying to the dallas campus but, I'm still not sure. Would I be able to Transfer the credits to another college? Thanks

Hi! So I have a few questions!!

I have applied and have completed all prerequisites with the exception of Microbiology which I am due to take this summer. How hard is it to get into the program? What is the deadline to have prerequisites completed to be enrolled? I am in Texas btw and have just graduated with a bachelor's degree from Texas Tech and was hoping would work for me! Any advice is accepted!

Congrats to you! I can't wait until the day I can say the same. Keep us updated and good work and God speed ahead.
