West Suburban College Of Nursing

Published

I realize there are many posts on WSC however, the last post was on April, 2009 and I wanted to get feedback from any "new" students. Would you please post your thoughts and current experience about WSC. Also, if you have any information in reference to the Service Learning program, will you please share that as well. I greatly appreciate it. Have a spectacular New Year.

There must be at least 2 WSC students????? Anyone....

When I was looking in to West Suburban, I looked for people on Facebook. You can search by school. I sent them private messages and asked their opinion. Most of them responded, and the responses were overall negative. You may want to try that to search for more current students.

megc629,

Thank you so very much. What school did you decide to attend? My sister in law friend attends WSC and she said its ok. Hmmm, make one wonder.

I know one person who is going there. She seems to be having an alright time, she chose the school after being rejected from North Park, so it was her second choice. It is pricey, but she hasn't had any major complaints. I know she gets together often with a study group so people must be friendly enough to help each other out!

luvs637,

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I'm considering Chamberlain or Devry due to their BSN progam however tuition and location is an additional issue. Both are 50 - 60 minutes away however traffic on 355 will be ok for me during the day. Also, I like the fact that WSC is located within the hospital.

Now, I have to research instructors credentials, turnover rate, clinical sites, and actually length of each program with completed pre-req's. It's appears it is more difficult to determine/research an appropriate and affordable nursing program than it is to graduate from nursing school.

Other things you might also want to consider:

1. Chamberlain's program is new and has not yet graduated a class, so who knows what their NCLEX pass rate will be or how their students will fare in the job market.

2. While West Suburban is located in the hospital, wasn't the hospital just sold off to a private company? I wonder how this will effect the school--if at all.

Sorry to take so long to respond to your question!

I am applying to JJC, Truman, and Daley for the fall 2010.

I was really interested in West Suburban, despite the bad reviews. Then I found out that they would not take a lot of my classes from my previous degree. My options were to take the classes again, or take the CLEP exam. I would have needed to take 5 CLEP exams! They tests are about $70 each and if you pass the CLEP, you get credit for a "C" grade. So that would have really lowered my gpa.

I decided to spend less money and go for the associates at a community college. I know that I will be able to work at least a few hours a week that way too!

luvs637 and megc629,

I will take the NCLEX pass rate and hospital privatization into consideration. I still have a few pre-req's to take prior to admission. I could possible go the CC LPN route and only have to take 2 pre-req.'s however acceptance into the program will be 2011 for me. Applications must be submitted by December for Spring consideration (only once a year admittance). With 300-400 applications for admission, I'm at my wits end. I'm up in age and I am not trying to compete with to many applicants.

I would like to get in, learn, comprehend, apply skills, test, and move on to the next. However,I would like to attend a reputable college with good to excellent instructors, high quality lab, and professional administration and staff. There's more I would like however, you get the point. I have a BS and would like to make the right decision. I've been researching for over a year and something needs to take place soon. Once again thanks for responding.

I just grduated from WSCN in 2009, the school is much better now comparing to when I started. They have a new Dean now and she is good. Our NCLEX pass rate is higher now. They went through a lot of transformations. It was hard for students (us) because we were the guinea pigs, but now that things are starting to fall into place it is much better now.

s5995,

If you do not mind my asking, how much was the total tuition? Thanks and congratulations on your successful completion of WSC nursing program.

It was about 20,000-21,000/yr when I was in school but I know it went up a little bit after we graduated. I would say it's about 22,000/yr now not including books. I know it sounds kind of high but there are scholarships that you could apply for. Also, there is chancellor's scholarship that you'll automatically get if your gpa is 3.5 or higher. When I was there 10,000/yr if you have 4.0 gpa and 5,000/yr if you have 3.75-3.99. let me know if you have more questions.
