I was just wondering if anyone was able to get accepted into the BSN program without using a cosigner on the private loans.

Yea we live in different areas lol. Long beach is extremely populated city with several hospitals in a 10 mile radius from our community college and cal state long beach campus. The struggle is real. I attended the info session and those were the exact figures they told me. That and for the roughly 60-80 spots open there are thousands if applications. But hey if u got the time and patience wait around, I simply have ran out of both.

Nursing school isn't for people who "ran out of money and time." It's for individuals who are passionate and driven enough to fight and earn for a spot in a competitive and rigorous RN program. That kind of mentality allows for substandard curriculums in pro-profit college trade schools. This is why nurses will perpetually be recognized as physician handmaidens... How can we advance the nursing profession if were licensing average joe/janes the honored title of RN?

Nursing is being considered as a back up or second career by people because everyone thinks it's so easy to do... and with WCU, there's no doubt all you need is money to accomplish that (of course you can rogue you worked hard... everybody works hard). When people think of medical school... it's always only the cream of the crop who earn a place in the cutthroat program. The existence of WCU and other for-profit trade school diminish the competitive nature of nursing schools and the RN curriculum in respectable colleges and universities.

Nursing isn't for everybody who wants to be a nurse. It's for those who are bright and brilliant who can advance the profession and shape the future of healthcare.

Matthew Andrew, BSN RN

Eh. I can be working side by side next to you and it wouldn't even matter. We learned the same things and have the same skills and passed the same test. Doesn't matter if I paid a million dollars for it, what we have is the same. A BSN. And no I don't plan on staying a nurse forever. But the BSN I earn here will carry thru the rest of my career. Seems like your trying to devalue my education so you can try and pump yours up or something. I wonder why.

little dreezy... your presumed BSN (if you ever graduate) will never be valued the same as mine... Let's graduate from nursing school first and passed the licensing examination and actually land a job and practice as a competent RN before we make such statements.

It's good... WCU will always be embedded in your transcripts and life. You tell all the nurses that when you start working okay? And you'll get the response you earned.

I'm sorry for that... this topic just gets me so heated because it has such a negative impact on my profession. In defense of nursing, that is all.

Really? You guys need to stop bashing each other's school. In the big scheme of things I bet if you fail to save a patient, make a huge mistake on the floor, or just plain do something wrong, no one will care what school you go to. I also tend to think those new nurses with giant egos are the worst people to work with. You need to humble down. You might need the "bad school" graduate one day. I never questioned my charge where she went to school or the fact that I have a MSN and she has a ADN, or that I went to UCLA and she went to some community college. It's just not done. In the real world that type of attitude will set you up for failure. The whole "my degree will be more valued" comment is not true. It might get your foot in the door but it won't keep you thier.

Yeah the BSN I'm earning is recognized by all the big schools if I go back for a masters or for NA or NP. I don't understand why you are so mad Matthew. In my area if you look at RN positions open at hospitals in my area, there are hundred of open positions. My area needs more nurses. Yes I will graduate, but thanks for you encouragement lol. You seem like another entitled nurse who thinks they are better than everyone because of the school you went to. It's funny how you chose a career of helping others, and all you seem to do is help yourself. I'm sure you'll go far in life with that attitude. I'm done arguing with you I need to go study LOL

The thing is why are so many people like educator, Admins, HR, government, counsellor and so on advice so much against for profit schools?

The cons just out way the pros.

Cons: expensive

high drop out rate, low pass rate

spend more money on recruiting people than on actually teaching them

it's harder to get hired after graduation

people stereotype you

For profit colleges are accountable to their investors and shareholders. This means that their first priority is not to educate but to turn in a profit.

Reputations are Shakier

Accreditation may be questioned

Pros: easy admission

flexible schedule

I speaking not just about nursing but in general about for profit schools.

Feel free to add to the list of pros and cons.

dreezy562, I think the reason why people are getting mad is because I and the majority of people think that everybody should be held to the same standard. Unfortunately, people who go to for profit schools have it easier to get in because they pay for it, so they don't need to be competitive. Where on the other hand, people who go the traditional route need to work their butts off to get into a competitive state college.

I think nobody would ever say anything if it would be just as hard to get into a for profit school as it is to get into a state college, but that is not the case. Also, since for profit schools take anybody and this causes saturation of the market which makes it harder for everybody in the end.

We as nurses should work with our leaders to figure out a way to standardize nursing school admissions. The nursing accrediting bodies should be a bit more picky with their accreditation. Yes, there's lots of open nursing positions. But you will soon realize as a new grad looking for work that these open spots are only for experienced nurses. You will realize that there are over a thousand applicants for the very few new-grad RN openings. Why? Because schools like WCU, churn out way too many nurses... increasing supply and decreasing demand. You have no idea yet because you haven't graduated. A year ago, I was a new grad... and it wasn't easy.

Trade schools, like WCU, is making money... at the expense of nursing. It's just not right!

Matthew Andrew, BSN RN

Sounds like your bitter that it wasn't easy for you to find a job? And blaming WCU grads because your resume isn't impressive? Their program has all the accreditations and certifications your school has. I'm sure the accreditation boards are much better at standardizing the EDUCATION of the programs. And for you to say it's easy when you haven't even attended the school is laughable.

Funny thing. My previous dentist graduated from USC. but I had to change dentists because he was HORRIBLE. A couple botched root canals. USC Is a pretty prestigious school. I'm suprised this guy could screw me up, not once but twice. And he graduated from USC? I think it depends more on the PERSON. Like I said we all pass the SAME test. Your education and my education , while maybe not exactly the same, we both have the drive and passion do make this commitment. What you do AFTER nursing school is what defines you as a nurse. Not anything before.

We'll see whose bitter when someone can't find a job and the loan repayment bills start piling up. Someone is gonna be hella broke and bankrupt.

Lol, I don't think that matthewandrew is bitter, since he already has a job and his student loan if he has any is probably pretty small.

dreezy562 , you on the other hand should be more concerned since statistics are not in your favor. The average new grad in the US takes between 8-12 month to find a job and in California it is probably even worse. Also that you graduated from WCU does not make you more marketable since the reputation is just not good. I hope you have a good network that you will find a job as quickly as possible after you graduate because after 6 month the first student loans are due. I already feel bad for the people who co-signed for you.
