West Coast University?

U.S.A. California

I'll be graduating from LVN school in November and want to go on to an LVN-RN program. I haven't done any RN pre-requisites and, at age 50, don't want to take the time to do so... so I'm looking for a program with "built in" pre-reqs. I'm curious about West Coast University but can't find much info about it. Please tell me what you know about it... thanks!

Oh my Gosh, anatomy was overwhelming!! I have Dr. Gamo for lecture and Dr. B...? for lab. Dr. Gamo is very nice and funny, but he talks a mile a minute and I can't think as fast as he talks! Dr. B (also very nice) talks so quietly that it's almost impossible to hear him. I politely asked him 3 times to talk louder, but he didn't! I asked him during a break and again after class to PLEASE speak louder. I wasn't the only one who couldn't hear him, but I was the only one who spoke up about it. I figure that if it costs me thousands of dollars to take the course, I should at least be able to hear the instructor!

I'm calling the school tomorrow to see what I can do about this. I need to learn this stuff... a huge task in itself... but if I can't hear, I'm toast!

Egads, there is a TON of reading, multiple pages of worksheets for each of the 8 chapters, 2 quizzes, and a report due next time we meet!

I have online English, and I like it alot. Alot of work there, too, but so far it's manageable.

How in the world does one work while attending this school??

You really need to voice out your opinion. And if you still have problems you talk to the dean. They are good in meeting half way. those instructors are new as far as I know.

yes, lot of student at wcu do work, they are the supermen and superwomen. hahaha

wellsee, just hang in there you will get the hang of it. :)

We'll See- Welcome to the world of WCU!:yldhdbng: information overload every term:sstrs:...you'll get the hang of it. Time Management, Organization & Stress Management will be your added classes. Sooo do your papers ahead of time if you can. Get a CALENDAR a big one where you write down everything thats DUE. So you can see as a whole whats next on your TO DO LIST. 10 weeks is fast sooo get organized!!

I myself worked till term 6! In the beginning of the program, I had TWO JOBS a part time and per diem job. Then when term 5 came, I was feeling the pressure! especially those week 9 tests! I know alot of people in my class that worked FULL TIME, I had one classmate she works noc shift then goes to school in the morning then goes home sleep eat and then goes back to work. I often asked her how the heck do you find time to study. You can tell whos working in the class, their grades shows the effect of working at the same time. But sme just had to work! But if you can get away without working thats better! I can understand why sme cant leave their jobs. More power to them!!!! and hands down :bowingpurthey are SUPERWOMAN and SUPERMAN!

Kithzeez- Yah I've heard of Ms. Palma! but she's clinical instructor! I heard she's nice but dont really know her!!

For all of those that are attending WCU, what are the typical hours of the program? I work Monday through Friday 8 to 4:30. Just wondering if I will b able to work and do the program. I have some prereq's done ( Socio, Gen psych, and lifespan psych, and english). Thanks!

CAlvn77, the time and day varies. But definitely you can still work. The times are sometime 8-1230, 130-6 or 630 to 1030pm. you meet 1 subject or 2 subjects a week for 10 weeks. there are saturday school too but everything depends on what subjects you need. It not like you can choose what time you go to school but the most days you have is 3days ina week. Only on term8 that you meet 4 days.. if you are thinking of going.. go now... next thing you'll know you are graduating :)

CAlvn77, I attend class one day a week, from 1:30-10:30. 1:30-6 is lecture and 6-10:30 is lab (anatomy). We were told that in the future we could request certain lab times, but not this term. It's a very long day, but I'm glad to make the commute once instead of twice weekly.

Hi Everyone,

I have a few questions for WCU alumni and one's that are going right now.

Do you need to have experience as an LVN before you start the program? if so how long?

I understand the classess are 10 weeks long but what are they and how are they divided? What do you study in term 1, 2, 3....

do you have a spring or any type of break?

What other classes do you need to graduate beside the regular nursing ones? I know English, Psy. I have Psy 101 from Cypress college do i need more than one Psy?

What excally are these hasi (not sure of spelling) and ati testing?

I'm planning on going to the Anaheim campus.

thank you for your help,

:typing

zerovero, sorry for the late reply

do you need to have experience as an lvn before you start the program? if so how long?

you do not need an experience to start the program, you do need a license though.

i understand the classess are 10 weeks long but what are they and how are they divided? what do you study in term 1, 2, 3....

for 10 week term you have to subjects.

for students who don't have any subjects credited from other colleges. the school break it down to term1 anatomy& english , term2 speech&physiology, term3 psych, socio and math, term4 chemistry&lifespan, term5 micro& transition lvntorn. and every term is 10 weeks.

do you have a spring or any type of break?

big no although we enjoyed the 2 weeks christmas and new year

what other classes do you need to graduate beside the regular nursing ones? i know english, psy. i have psy 101 from cypress college do i need more than one psy?

before you get in to the transition program you need to take english, anatomy, sociology, math, speech, physiology, psychology, chemistry, lifespan psychology, microbiology and then the transition.

now, if you had taken psychology within 5 years then have the school credit it.

what excally are these hasi (not sure of spelling) and ati testing?

hesi is the type of testing that the school uses. ati testing is the same. school figures that hesi andati are very useful for students in preparations for the nclex rn.

i hope i answered your questions... :)

thank you for getting back to me with all this good info.

i wanted to talk to an counselor today but nobody was available.

i have more questions:

could you tell me more about HESI and ATi. What happens if you don't pass it? By reading the board somone was saying you have 2 opportunities and the scoare has to be at least 760.

If you have english, speech, psy, soc, math life span and chem done do you know how much tuition would be?

Since you have those done how long would the program be than? I would need Anatomy, Physio, Micro, Transition to LVN and than the RN classes.

where are you guys doing the clinicals for semester 6,7,8?

do you do one care plan per class considering they are 10 weeks long?

any other advice?

i'm looking into starting Oct after wedding and honeymoon...hahaha

could you tell me more about hesi and ati. what happens if you don't pass it? by reading the board somone was saying you have 2 opportunities and the scoare has to be at least 760.

hesi starts at term 5 where you have you transition and micro. this determines all the things you know as lvn. like what i said in the past if you fail you get to try 2nd and still not, you have to repeat the one term which will cost $9000 added to you loan.

you actually email them and ask for counselor. i had a hard time too before contacting them that is why i decided to walk in. it is easier that way. look for aaron perez.

if you have english, speech, psy, soc, math life span and chem done do you know how much tuition would be?

i believe $4500 each subject was taken from my loan. but mind you that they will still ask for 60000 loanfrom sallie mae for just incase ( like you repeat it) but at the end you will get. so do the math.

mind you if you have subject taken, it doesn't matter if you got a's or b's. all it says credit. if your overall grade is a c in lvn you will be on probation. meaning you have to have 3.0 above overall gpa before taking the transition. or else otherwise you have to repeat the subjects you took from other college to boost you gpa. if you have all your subjects done at westcoast and still you gpa is below 3.0 and you are on probation. you will be out from the program. owing 30,000 and you cannot credit the subjects you took to other school except private school. this is just the worst case scenario but it happen on my group. she was out of the program because her gpa was 2.5 it is a c but she was on probation. but if it is my case i will think ahead and if i am paying this much money i will not goof around.

this is why the school uses hesi, and the reason for increasing the passing rate from 690 to 760 is because the school wants to have an accreditations to match the standard of ucla

since you have those done how long would the program be than? i would need anatomy, physio, micro, transition to lvn and than the rn classes.

yes of course. you cannot go in the program without doing the prereqs. like what i have said. each term is either 2 or 3 subjects (i think it is only one time you will have 3 subject in a term, which is socio, psych and math). and you meet once a week except for the ones who have the lab (sciences)

after the transition you will have med surge and leadership. (1 term) then so on. if ever you had all the prereqs done in other college within five years. you can go straight to transition. then go to the rn classes. again, 1 term is 10 weeks.

where are you guys doing the clinicals for semester 6,7,8?

we have good hospital clinicals ( northridge, kaiser, verdugo hill, city of angels, glendale memorial, children's hospital and some more)

do you do one care plan per class considering they are 10 weeks long?

like for the transition 1 careplan, 1 0ral presentation and 1 group presentation.

for me right now.

for my clinical i have to do 4 careplans, 1oral presentation, 15hr community service, 1 teaching presentation

leadership; 5 group critical thinking paper, 1 term paper, 1 resume paper, 1 group presentation, 2ati testing,1 hesi ( for final). mind we still have our midterm.

med-surge- 1 article critique, 1 group presentation, 3 exams, 1 midterm, 1 hesi (finals)

any other advice?

the program is really hard but you can do it. you really have to read and be organized. since you are getting married. don't be pregnant :D. because it is hard. i have seen some of my friend that got pregnant. they missed a lot of days. make up exams are really hard. ( remember you are only allowed to have 3 missed days for each class. if you feel like you have been waiting to get into the program to some colleges you can start now here without a wait. but it is a fast track and a big commitment. if you decide to go to wcu go now while the price is lower. i heard it will go up again.

this happen to me. i heard about them when it was only $40,000. i hesitated about the price. i commited myself and quit my job and waited at community collge. it took my 2 years and got me nothing. by doing that i lost 50,000 annual income. then i decided to go to west coast with price 60,000. the good thing was i got some subjects credited.

goodluck to you! it is hard but with determinations you can do it.

like me i am very slow, so i have to read, read, reread. so far i am surviving. :nuke:

I wanted to tell you:bowingpur (thank you) for all the information you gave me. We are meeting with them today so i feel we are prepare when they are going to paint us the great picture that this school is...

i read this and it raised a big read sign:

"This is why the school uses HESI, and the reason for increasing the passing rate from 690 to 760 is because the school wants to have an accreditations to match the standard of UCLA"

The school is not accreditated???? so if i finish this and get my job it wont count if i want to go RN to BSN through my job???

the other school we're looking at is the International University of Nursing on St Kitts (two semesters there and than you move back to US for 3 more either in KY, OK, FL, AZ, NJ)...we'll see

thank you so much for the heads up w/ the GPA thing of 2.5.

are you at the LA or Anaheim school? (we're going to look at anaheim....the truth is i'm an RN already and my future husband is the LVN, but I decided i wanted to do the leg work to find out about the schools and than share w/ him)

we're not planning on having any babies right now ...:lol2: it would be way too much stress on what we want to do!!!
