West Coast University?

Published

I'll be graduating from LVN school in November and want to go on to an LVN-RN program. I haven't done any RN pre-requisites and, at age 50, don't want to take the time to do so... so I'm looking for a program with "built in" pre-reqs. I'm curious about West Coast University but can't find much info about it. Please tell me what you know about it... thanks!

just wondering about their BSN program (non-lvn) for someone who has all their prereqs done...

1) how much would it cost?

2) how long it would take?

for example, someone who not only has anat, physio, micro, and all those standard nursing pre-reqs done, but also general ed pre-reqs as well from a previous degree.

for those that are looking at the bsn non lvn program just go take the HESI pass it and speaking w/ financial aid that's how you're going to find out the final price!

BTW, always voice out any concerns! you guys are actually pretty lucky because, when I was still at WCU, there were soooo many last minute changes! they usually come to talk to you in class before another term begins and talk about whats to come, usually, dont be surprise if theres a change. Like I said, its still a new program, sooo voice out any concerns, always be true to the evals! they do read them no matter how many times they ask you to fill them up!

Regarding when I graduated-- we were the batch that was well liked by all the instructors and clinical instructors (not to brag or anything, but soo we heard from other later batch) --- but administration not soo much cuz we will always complain of unfair treatment with sme changes in the policies and we have students in my batch that are notorious rebels when it comes to administration...which by the way, we always back up the those notorious students, if it wasnt for them, they wouldnt have done anything if we had just stay quiet... always OPEN up, its your school, you're paying $50,000- $60,000... get your money worth!

Congratulations Iheartnrsing. I'm considering enrolling into the BSN program in Ontario and I have completed many of my prerequisites. Just out of curiosity, have you found a job yet? What types of hospitals can a graduate apply to? I heard that a WCU grad can't work at a magnet hospitals in CA which are:

Children's Hospital Central California Madera (559) 353-5396

El Camino Hospital Mountain View (650) 940-7000

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Newport Beach (949) 764-8291

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla La Jolla (858) 626-6370

Sharp Grossmont Hospital La Mesa (619) 740-6000

UCLA Medical Center Westwood Los Angeles (310) 825-6413

University of California, Irvine Medical Center Orange (714) 456-5666

Is this true? Where do you intend to work? And where did you do your clinicals at? How are the instructors? I am new to this site and don't know how to PM yet. hehe Congrats again!!

it is not true that magnet hospitals do not accept west coast students. In fact my 2 classmates are there right doing the versant program at childrens. and 3 are in Cedars sinai. Instructors are good this depends also on the rapport of student- instructor.

Iheartnursing, IPASSSEDDDDDD, i WILL BE WORKING in NICU, los angeles...thanks for all your encouragements..

Kithzeez thank you for all your posts. Very informative! How long did it take you and your classmates to find jobs? Did you do the LVN to RN or straight BSN? Do you know if their are any master's programs who take WCU BSN graduates? Please respond when you can Thanks in advance! :yeah:

I took LVN to RN. I had some prerequisites done so it took me 12 months.. I don't know anybody who had master program. I was ready to take their BSN program at WCU but university of Phoenix is cheaper and has online class. I love WCU. I did not have a hard time taking my NCLEX because hesi exams. good luck to you

about the job. while we are still taking our last ten weeks, we are applying for all the versant and new grad programs hospitals offer. It's tough not because we are WCU graduate but the economy right now compensates with the opening. Unfortunately, not a lot of hospitals can afford new grad programs/ versant. I heard they cost like $35,000 because it will take 4 months to 6 months. so while we are busy with out KAPLAN, We are attending interviews here and there. I myself was not able to get the new grad. but the hospital offer me precertorship and willing to train. :)

i just wanted to say congrats to all of you that took the nclex. my husband is starting the lvn to rn on tuesday and i'm going back to work that day too (i'm an er nurse)....thank you for sharing your stories and for showing that there is light at the end of the tunel...

my big beef w/ the school was the book situation...that they made him buy the book from school....for the next term we are going to get them from b&n or other places that are cheaper.

for those of you who are looking for new grad programs...the economy has hit us too so take the job you're offered and ask more preceptor time.

anyone my hubby should be looking out for w/ regards to instructor? he's taking anatomy and math this 1st term and 2nd 10 weeks will be physio.

math was a good experience for me. Areolla was good but I heard she left west coast already. I didn't take anything else but math. I heard about the psych1 and lifespan. if Biggerstaff is the instructor. he is the one that requires exams in the morning. if you are late no exam. he is strict and loud but I heard he is good.

chem is one thing too. although the instructor "singha" is very smart. the language barrier really is the reason. he has a very strong accent. Microbiology was cool too but I heard the instructor " Dr Pepper" is not there anymore.

Even so, be it a new instructor or not, anything you need you ask help. do not hesitate to ask. VOICE OUT your concerns. it is best if you do it in a group. Go to the VP. but of course talk to the instructor first.

hope that helps

about the book. you should be careful on buying them. Not all books are being used. if you can ask student ahead of you, tell them that you are willing to buy, that will be good. ask them also what are the books they actually use. this is also good in developing networking to the advance students and borrow notes. ( that just a tip). I got some books that are not used at all and still stuck with me. never have the time to read them because the term is so fast.

I'm currently going to a CSU and waiting to get in the BSN program, and the wait is ridiculous. I'm in my second year and don't want to wait any longer. I have taken most of my pre-req's but my grades aren't the best. I was looking at nursing schools online and saw that West Coast University has a BSN program. But I had a couple of questions:

Does the WCU in Los Angeles offer the BSN program?

Do my grades from my previous classes matter?

Do I need to be an LVN?

What qualifies a student to be in the BSN program?

And for the LVN to RN program, you just need an LVn license correct?

If anyone can help me out, that would be great. I just feel stuck :sniff:

The last time I spoke to one of their representative in LA area said that BSN program from High school graduate will be in the LA campus too. "will be" I dunno if that pushes already. you can actually call the LA campus and asked.

LVN to RN is you have to have license for LVN.

BSN program, you just need your high school diploma. But then again, I will look into that if I were you.

good luck !!!
