West Coast University DALLAS 2018 NEED INFO

Published

Hello! I am considering West Coast University for the BSN program. I am having a difficult time finding anyone in the Fort Worth area that has even heard of this place. I want to know how the hospitals feel about this school. I've heard some places wont even hire from Dallas career colleges. I am a military spouse and have very limited time in one location. I want to be an oncology nurse but am very concerned about credits not transferring out of this school. Also, if the accreditation is from the west coast, will I get a job on the east coast? So many questions, so little time! Haha! Any other military members have any experience here?? Any WCU graduates here that can answer some more questions? :)

To paint a different picture, I work 3-12's a week. I know a lot of others who do as well. I'm not going to lie and say it's easy. I really have to manage my time. But my family has this weird obsession with groceries (they like when we have them), so I have to work. If you can avoid it, don't work. But if you have to, use your time wisely and work as far ahead as you can. I've been working since I've been in Nursing Core (actually before that) and have gotten straight As. Understand that this is not without sacrifice. Do those of us who work nights have to come straight to school after a shift sometimes? Absolutely. Do I miss out on everything because of work or school? Sure But we make it happen. It really depends on you and your time management/work ethic.

Well said Crunchy! This is my situation. Bills come beating my head in every month and unfortunately, even with support, I still have to work. I'm going to inbox you!

I have a few questions about the school do they accept the hesi? and also I saw somewhere that their credits don't transfer so what does that mean in terms of once you graduate..does that mean I can only attend their masters program or what the website is very vague and doesn't really answer much..

When I started in April of this year, they took my HESI scores from 2016. However, now they have transitioned to TEAS, they may still accept the HESI scores if you already took them but WCU only offers TEAS now. As far as credits go, your individual classes, say Fundamentals of Nursing, will NOT transfer to another school. However, the BSN degree does. Like crunchy said, you're considered a grad student once you finish your degree but if you fail out or decide to leave the program for whatever reason and try to go to another nursing program, you'll probably have to start over because those credits don't transfer. One girl who was in my cohort went to Chamberlain for her first semester then she decided to come to WCU. She had to redo all of WCU's required classes PLUS the actual program classes so yeah. I hope that answers your question! :)

I am considering WCU, I just requested more information, I was wondering if you are doing the evening or day program? and If the classes meet just once a week is the rest of the content online? or do you have like actual textbooks?

Hi there! Allow me to clear up some of your questions. The prelicensure BSN program does not have an online only option. You will meet in class with your instructor. Some of the books do have an option to buy an online copy, however, for some classes, you will need the PIN that allows you to access the homework assignments, and that may not be available with a PDF. I always purchased the actual hard copies of the books.

WCU has 2 formats for classes on campus. The first is the block format. Your class will meet one day a week for 5 hours at a time. The second is the blended format, which is what most of the prerequisite classes are doing. This format meets one time a week for 2.5 hours, and then you have online assignments to do (discussion boards). You aren't necessarily at school only once a week. If you have a class such as Microbiology, that has a lab, and another class like speech, you may have Micro on Wed from 0930-1200, Speech on Tues from 0700-1200, and Micro Lab on Friday from 0700-1100. Those are just examples to show you how the schedule could be setup.

I don't participate in the evening/weekend program, but I have friends who do. I attend the daytime program, and I also work full time. Once you get into Nursing CORE, each didactic (fundamentals, med-surg, OB, etc...) has a clinical, skills lab, and sim lab that you have to go to. In CORE, I've had terms where I'm on campus 5x week, but not the whole day. Some days it's only until 12. If you work, the schedule for the following term is usually out by week 5, so you'd have a good idea of when you could work. I hope I was able to answer your questions. Feel free to ask if you have more!

Thank you for the information this was very helpful, I have an appointment tomorrow for an information session.

I am interested in WCU and I just requested more info! Can’t wait to get everything started. Glad I found this thread!

Quick update! I had my info session today and I really enjoyed the campus! Literally everyone seemed so happy and nice lol. The next start date is June 10 but I will be starting in the cohort after that due to my sciences classes being expired. I’m going to go ahead and take them at a cc before starting to save some money. Thanks for all of the comments! Very helpful in my decision.

Excellent call! My sciences were expired too, and I did the same thing! #ProTip: Make sure you take A&P 1&2! If not they won’t take it.

It’s been a minute since I’ve commented on this post. After submitting all my transcripts I found out that I didn’t actually have to retake any science course!!! I have secured all my financial aid and my official start date is August 19! I’m so excited to get started. I’d like to hear how the journey is going for y’all. Any advice you could share?

Hello all,

I am new in this group and interested in starting this August. Anyone knows how the schedules for evening classes? Is that evening included the weekend or they are both separately? Thanks. I am done with all the paper works but just need to repeat my Micro at dccccd due to expired. Thanks all.

Anyone has transferred Micro to WCU do you know if they accept BiO 2420 or 2421?

Thank you
