West Coast University BSN Program???

Published

Hi Everyone!!!!!

So lol I'm going to put my life in a nutshell, I'm 20 yrs old and I live in NY, and I'm considering on going to WCU to obtain my BSN, I have most of my science and general ed pre-reqs completed. I decided to go this route cuz I just wanted to get this over with, and I most definetly like the idea of getting my bachelors in 2yrs time versus getting my associates degree at my local community college in the same amout of time. Anyways I have read about the costs and stuff but I have just some basic questions for anyone that just enrolled, currently enrolled or an alumni of WCU.

1. How time consuming are the classes?

2. Are the clinicals hard?

3. Was the HESI entrance exam easy and what did it consist of?

4. What are the costs?

5.Are they helpfull at finacial aid?

6.Would a person be able to work full time while attending?

That's all I can think of as of now, so whatever help you can give me will be greately appreciated.

Sincerely,

Chikita =)

Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better is best!

Hey everybody.. I've been reading your posts about WCU. and I'm really interested in it, my only concern is the cost..

Right now I go to a cc and I'm still working on nursing pre-reqs..

Do you think I should continue with what I'm doing.. or look more into WCU's BSN program??..

What if I finished all my prereqs at the cc, then apply to WCU?

Thanks a bunch :)

omg! take all the pre reqs at the cc first! it is sooooooooo expensive to go to wcu. if u r interested in going to wcu, get a pre req packet from the admissions rep to see what the pre reqs are and finish it at ur cc then go to wcu cause it will take a year off of your three years there and save u lots of money. it will be very difficuly to find funding for the tuition at wcu...they say that u cant even have a job while in this program becuase of the intensity so i think money becomes a big issue for peeps going to wcu or planning on going. also, their credits do not transfer to a lot of other regionally accredited schools. u have to do your research so if u plan on getting ur masters later, this might become a problem for u. i know the ccs have like a crazy waitlist but i think it is worth it.

I would say from what I've heard doing the pre-reqs at a cc is the best idea if you want to go to WCU.......that being said, you also cannot ignore the fact at some community colleges, it is near impossible to get into the pre-req's. I was fortunate to grab the 3rd spot left in my anatomy class, and that's with a great registration date, 2 days after registration started. For anyone who doesn't have a good registration date, it can take them a couple years just to get into a pre-req class.......it happens, there were at least 3 people begging to get into my anatomy class, saying they have been trying for a couple years at each school in the area.

Some people also just DON'T HAVE THE TIME to wait 2 years on a waiting list to get into an ADN or BSN program. So for those who don't have the time to sit around for a couple years HOPING to get into a nursing program, I think that a school like WCU is perfect for them.

For people who cannot fathom spending the kind of money it takes to go to a private school, then obviously a cc or state university is best for them.

It is only worth it if it works for that individual and what they deem most important........saving time or saving money.

If you can afford to wait a few years, great for you. But some people can't, and I think it's important for those of you who don't have the luxury of time, don't feel bad about spending the money.....it's YOUR future, and no one elses. It's your education, it will eventually pay off.....

Hi HumorHeals,

Can you please tell me some of the hospitals you called? One of my biggest fears is that the school is not well known and it will be difficult getting a job. Im also irritated that no one at the oc campus will tell me where they have their clinicals

I was really thinking of going here I an a veteran and with the new gi bill VA will pay for up to 3years of school. Also with there yellow ribbon program I feel this school will be good for me all I will have to do is find out a way to pay for the remaining 3months. Looking to go to ontario campus does anyone have any good info to pass about the ontario campus?

any info on ontario campus would be great thank you

Is anybody attending WCU in Anaheim??

Their BSN program starts in Nov and I would like to enroll, but I'm so scared about the money.

Any suggestions??

I just wanted to share my experience at West Coast University. I am currently a student at the Ontario Campus. Like all schools there are positives and negatives. Some of the positives - the teachers, I have never had such great teachers who are willing to help you and actually care about you being there and understanding the material, next the short terms. Most people complain about them, but I love them. It is a lot of work, but it gets you ready for when you are working as a nurse and you have to think on your feet. The classes, they are 5 hours long but you only have to go once a week.

So some of the bad stuff - the campus is three stories we can't use the elevators to go up. Its really dumb because science books are heavy when you are walking up all the stairs. We don't have anywhere to eat thats near by. We have some vending machines and thats it. At one point we had a company bringing in food, but they flaked out and were only there for about a week.

Overall it has been a great experience. I would recommend the program to anyone who is ready to dedicate themselves (and their wallet) to going to school. It is worth the investment!

Just a quick question for the students who are at WCU right now! Do they provide anything with HOUSING, and PERSONAL LIVING EXPENSES while you attend college there, because I'm from the BAY AREA, and I'd probably have to move there! Thanks so much all you people have been very helpful :)

No. Its up to you to find housing etc. Most people, Ive noticed, live pretty close to the school, although some do commute.

Thanks Irishgal :) wow that's crazy so I'd have to come up with the money for housing and personal expenses, that sucks :( but I guess I gotta look into it further. Is anyone from the bay area attending WCU. I wanted to know where you're living, and how much is your rent, and personal expense.....Thanks!

I know this thread is pretty old, but I'm bumping it because what others have failed to mention is what is included in the cost of attendance.

Yes, 100K is A LOT to spend. However, included in that are ALL your books, uniforms, supplies, lab fees, and $50 more includes your bg check, and insurance, AND membership fees to a student nursing association [which of course you can write off during tax time].

On the flip side, if you go to Cal State San Bernardino [for example], for 4 years you'll be paying 68K NOT including books, lab fees, bg check, insurance, scrubs, supplies, parking passes, ect...and don't get me started on waitlists.

Yes, you're paying for convenience if you go with WCU, but at the same time, if you really do the math, it's not that much more than a traditional college AND you get done quicker.

I'm really thankful. My ACT scores from HS qualify me to bypass the HESI. I'm going to an informational in Sept =]

I'd just like to add, as a con, if you look at the program catalog the amount of clinicals you get in this program is lacking in comparison to other programs [iMHO]
