Well...I'm going to do it...taking the big dive

I went to an information session today at a local CC to hear all about it's RN program. I got completely motivated and decided to go for it. Some of my prereq.s are too old(Micro and A&P) and some I don't have (Nutrition and Psych). So I rushed over to a community college and signed up. I'm taking A&P(Anatomy), Micro, and Nutrition next quarter (I'll have to miss the first four classes too!!!)

This particular program accepts people on a point system. So many points for this, so many for that. If I can ace these courses I will be pretty competative for starting next fall.

I visited a local Trauma 1 level hopital in the area after the info session today and was floored by that was going on at this place. Not your typical hospital. I'm going to try to volunteer there too.

Anyway, my enthusiasm is high. And I'm feeling psyched about become a nursing dude. I'll write my name with an RN after it on the markerboard on the fridge and keep focused on that. I'll keep up with updates...on this. Hopefully I won't lose it taking all these pre-reqs at once.

Congratulations! You'll be so happy that you did! We look forward to future posts from you....GOOD LUCK!!!!

Missing the first four classes of A&P and Micro can really really set you back. Make sure you work with your instructors before you miss. Good luck!

Gotta agree with Maggie on this one, is there any way you can make those classes? You have a heavy load with the three you are taking and with a point based system you want high grades. Some instructors will drop you and let the add ons have your place if you don't show up for the first two classes so be sure to contact them to get the coursework ahead of time.... Good Luck! :)

High enthusiasm is great. Good luck!

Micro had a wait list of 80-some people(?!?!?) So...I'll be taking A&P 1, Nutrition(online), Dev. Psych(online), and a "Multicultural Course"...probably Anthropology(online). I'm at a bit of a loss as to why I need some of these. One course will not make me more aware of other cultures. Psych I can understand.

I read the other day about Nursing schools being understaffed, and thus having to turn away competative students. Kind of a bottleneck. Not enough nurses in the field, and no way to turn them out fast enough. It's too bad.

Well, I'll be able to apply for the Fall Qtr next year. Gotta get those grades though. Last time I took A&P was in '93. I dont remember too much....let me see "Circle of Willis" was a cool name for the circulation in around the brain. SomeLoversTryPositionsThatTheyCantHandle was a way to remember the bones in the hand SLTPTTCH(scapoid, luntate, triquitel, pisiform, trapezem, trapezius, captate, hamate) I recall the brain being very complicated and the blood clotting process being horrid. If I remember correctly, I will need to buy bulk flashcards.

Nutrition doesn't look to difficult. I imagine its somewhat similar to Biochem. Anyone taken this recently?

op, not sure where you are, but if there is more than one college in your area, check to see what courses might be open at ones other than the one you enrolled in, if you need the courses that were full.

i've often taken courses at more than one school (you have to be careful about your schedule, but that's not too bad), and when i was taking my pre-reqs (i too had some moldy oldies!), i took a&p i and ii, and micro, all three with labs, in one two-month summer session.

i was running pretty hard, but i did it.

anyway, just suggesting that if a class is full at one school, it doesn't mean you are totally out of luck.

and try, try very hard, not to miss a single class of prereqs or nursing. it will make such a difference!

SpecificNorthwest-

I'm taking NUTRITION by correspondence (not online) and I love it! This particular class is for pre-nursing/med/etc so it's heavy on the chem/biochem/physiol, but it's interesting and really has helped to get my mind in a "school" mode. I haven't taken a college course since 1993! so it's a good refresher. I have two young kiddos (4 &7 yrs) so most of my studying is done on breaks at work and late at night, but it's going real well. I got an A on the first exam!

I don't know how online classes work, but with correspondence I set the pace, and arrange my own exam schedule. Although-I have to travel 45min/1hr away for the exam. The university is based in another city, but their health sciences center/med school/nursing etc are all based where i live-thank goodness.

I'm sarting Dev. Psych, also by correspondence, next week- I'll let you know what I think. I'm taking A&P next spring/summer at the CC. I would apply there for ADN, but my first degree doesn't gain me any ground & I can apply to the accelerated BSN program (for 06) which is 14 months and all my previous course work transfers! I'm retaking A&P for my own benefit-since it's been forever. Keep us all updated! Good Luck!:p
