This is test week so the clinic has been fairly quiet until today. A little after noon I had a young girl come in c/o difficulty breathing. Her HR and RR were elevated, but nothing else out of the ordinary. I decided to call EMS, mainly because she was clearly distressed and I couldn't figure out what else to do. Blahblahblah you know the drill. In the end the parents took her to the ER and thanked me profusely.
An hour later I had a young boy show up with a minor sore throat and a temp of 99.6. Second visit today so I called his mom. She decided to pick him up.As they were leaving the building I was also leaving, about 20 paces behind them, when I heard mom ask the boy,"Did the nurse give you any Tylenol?" No,ma'am. Mom muttered disgustedly, "Idiot."
And how was your day?

She, obviously, is the "Idiot"! I take it you cannot give Tylenol PRN to any child who comes in the clinic. Maybe she was calling her son an idiot.. lol
Nope, she was referring to me. We are only allowed to give OTC meds if the parent has signed a permission form AND provided the medicine. A lot of my parents think we have big ol' bottles of pills sitting around for whatever ails you. No, she definitely meant that *I* was the idiot.

i feel your pain. I had a student on thursday that wanted to be sent home for cramps - which i generally don't do. I told the student she could come during her non academic period to use the heating pad and sent her off to class - what happens 5 minutes later? A call from angry mom asking who I thought I was to make the determination of which students should go home....
Idiot.
I don't think she realized that i was behind her. Have you ever done that--made a stupid comment and found out the person you were talking about is standing right there? Sheesh. I have. So i guess it takes one to know one.

uhhhhhhh, a nursing degree and delegation to you by your district and principal to do so????????????? Lord, where has all the common sense gone?
I just got blasted by a mom because I would not let her son stay and scratch his scabies AND ringworm infested skin all day............................No, he has not been treated for any of it!

I honestly would have called out, asking her to come back into the office and gently explained that Tylenol is not given for 99.6, and that she is more than willing to give it to him and send him back to class

Hey mustlovepoodles,
Fellow idiot here. I had a mother thoroughly put out that I asked her to pick up her child that had 103.2. #1 She was going to have to miss work. Get this #2 She didn't want him to miss Jump Rope For Heart the next day due to the 24hr. fever free policy. #3 Wanted to know "How did he end up in your office anyway?" (Real snotty like.) Explained that apparently he told his teacher that his head hurt...he felt hot to her so she sent him to me. When he arrived at my office the first words out of his mouth were "My head hurts and I am on fire." When I asked the little boy again he said,"I never said my head hurt." I ask,"Then how did your teacher know you felt hot?" Sheepishly replies,"Because my head hurts." At this point Mom called back and spoke with the secretary and had her husband call and yell at the principal. They wanted to know if the doctor released him could he come back to school the next day. She was relentless. And not the least bit interested that her 5 y.o. was sick. We state,"No. I am aware that he had a high fever and he has to be out for 24 hours at least. You all know the drill. Well, it turns out he didn't return back to school for 4 days. I was always polite to her during all of the back and forth phone calls. She will not speak to me to this day. I of course always say hello to her. It is the idiot in me. A little passive aggressive idiot at that. I would like to say to these parents,"I am so sorry but you must have forgotten to ask the hospital for the doctor that only hands out babies that are never going to get sick, cost you one day from work, money, or your precious time.
Mustlovepoodles. I apologize my quick reply turned into a full out rant. You just remember us idiots stick together. That is the only way some of these kiddos are going to survive these parents they have inherited.
Hang tough mlp.
