Well I don't have an ethical issue but I need to discuss one !

Published

For my Internship class we have to come up with and discuss a controversial issue/topic that is pertinent to current nursing practice or health care and discuss pros and cons and how the issue has or will impact the nursing profession. . .I'm stuck  I can't think of any issues that I really want to discuss. . . .so I'm hoping to get some ideas, I would appreciate any help I can get.

We had to do an ethical presentation last semester. Our teacher actually assigned us a topic, but ours was.. an adolescent with cancer didn't want the new treatment, but his parents did and how do we, as nurses, handle that situation. I wish I could remember some of the other group's projects to give you more ideas. If I think of one, I'll let ya know.

Maybe you should look for the longest threads on this site - they are often controversial.

ADN vs BSN is always popular.

Should a terminally ill patient be told of his or her terminal status?

Should a convicted murderer be given a compassionate release from prison when it's determined that the person is dying (as in the current case in California involving a member of the Manson family)?

A few years ago in my nursing class a group of students did a presentation on buying prescription drugs from Canada. It was an interesting topic that created a lot of discussion. Best of luck to you.

Last semester I did my ethics paper on organ transplant. It is an issue that is very easy to find materal on. (I got an A with out to much effort)

Withdrawing Life Support in Critical Care. A very interesting case is going on right now in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where a doctor attempted to withdraw life support on an 85 y/o patient with a very poor prognosis. The patient's family went to court to compel the hospital to continue providing life support. The doctor resigned. Since then, two doctors have resigned. This is a VERY common issue with the elderly on life support, and families who cannot let go. Some newpaper articles you could read:

Winnipeg doctor resigns in battle to end ailing man's life

Two more critical-care doctors resign from Winnipeg's Grace Hospital

I'm sure there are LOTS of articles, and journals about not only this case, but MANY others throughout North America. If I were in school right now, this would be my topic of choice!
