Welcome to the Forum - General Aussie Chat

World Australia

Published

Having been guilty myself of hijacking threads saying hello and just chatting to my fellow Aussies I thought it might be worthwhile for us to have a thread that is just dedicated to general Aussie chat. We can then discuss issues like the Morris - oops Davis inquiry in Queensland and what it will mean for Q health and for the rest of Australia.

We can talk cricket, sport and anything else that is just us.

Say hello to new members dropping by.

Generally find out what is happening in the rest of the country.

I will make this thread a "sticky" so that it will always be at the top of the forum.

g'day granny! glad you popped in and said hello! i betcha miss 'granny smith's' too, eh? do they have those apples in canada? :-)

i recently sent some vegemite to some of our american friend's here on allnurses. they'd not tried it. some liked it, others didn't. haha.

tell your folks to buy from a catering wholesaler. you can buy a tray of those small sachets,( as in those plastic bubble thingo's), used in hospitals or hotels etc. it's a 240g tray, so not too big to post and you only open a sachet as you require.

good luck with your new life in canada! if you get too homesick, just pop in here and we'll try and give you some good ol aussie banter! :-)

cheers......

I remember when I was 14 sitting on a plane next to some American man who told me he would rather eat raw emu then a spoonful of vegemite:uhoh3: ! Obviously did not know when a good thing hit him:chuckle. I shall definatley look into those packs, they are a good idea, thanks... oh, they do have Grannysmith apples here but not as crunchy and crisp as back home! By the way, I noticed you are soon off to America, hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy the beautiful landscapes, animals and the public atmosphere. It is interesting to notice differences between states and the their accents! Cheerio for now

there was a story in the age a few months ago that kraft, the american corporation that makes vegemite, was moving production to china and closing the factory in south melbourne. maybe they should call it sinomite instead...

oh no! tell me this isn't so! nothing's sacred anymore! i hope this doesn't happen, but i fear, as with so many, (too many!), other things, it will. i tried to purchase some aussie souvenirs to take "up/over" on our upcoming trip, do you think i could buy anything made in australia???!!!! nope! almost all were made in china!

:roll yeah grannysmith! g'day from aus. how cold is it there anyway. i hope your registration goes thur pretty quickly. wow, it would be so exciting moving to a new country and everything. what was that queenland quote - [color=yellow]it's sunny one day and sunny the next. just keep thinking warm things. hope you don't get too home sic

Bureaucracy is one of the singular most reasons for the decline in what was once an excellent healthcare system in Australia. I have witnessed some totally absurb decision making, with detrimental outcomes, in my years as a nurse.

As a healthcare consumer, and a support person of one, I've witnessed things that, if it weren't for me being a nurse, and knowing what I know, the outcomes could have been horrendous! And a lot had to do with useless, unnecessary, 'red tape!' :stone

I'm pleased to read your post Gwenith, that Qld health at least is making progress.

The thing I also came to be aware of in all the years nursing in various different states, is just how VASTLY different and in someways, polarised, we are as a nation in terms of how we deliver healthcare.

When I went to Western Australia back in the late 70's, you'd have thought I'd materialised from another planet! The parochial attitude I found there was unbelievable! And dare I try to share with them any knowledge I had, (which CLEARLY, they didn't!), I was promptly informed; "well, you're NOT in Sydney now, and this is how we do it here!". Well, excuse me! So you desire to stay stuck in nursing as it's always been done and never progress, learn and develop???!!!   It was incredible! Thankfully, they've come a long way since those days! With more people migrating between the states and territories, there's less of a "them and us" attitude. More intergration & acceptance of those who have something to offer and share. More willingness to learn from people from another state, health facility etc.

Hmmmm, sounds a lot similar to the story told by immigrants to our land, doesn't it? :icon_roll But that's another story for another day..........

for starters we sandgropers are tribal, not parochial and the reasons for not accepting your comments was we had already tried it that way and it didnot work!!

I am from Queensland and I am used to those who live round that overgrown coathanger that they have down there bagging us!!:D It's jealousy - that is what it is:p

Actually I find that it is more institute driven. Unfortunately there are some institutes that because they can lay claim to being the biggest or the newest or the oldest, think that they are also the best and do not need to listen to anyone outside of that particular institution. Happens everywhere - the outsider is bullied and put down because they dare to suggest change.

Hi all

I mainly go to the first year in nursing and other forums and have just looked in here. I didn't realise there was a section for we Oz nurses until last night. If one thing has impressed me over the last few months it was Toni Hoffman standing up and voicing her concerns about the stuff ups in Bundaberg. That girl has guts. She's the type I'd like to see running Queensland Health. At this stage I am just a newly graduated nurse and am hoping to get into a post grad program but hoping for a job until that happens. Hope to look in to this site more often.

I seemed to wait a couple of months for my registration too. Annoying to say the least. Mind you I didn't have anywhere to go at that time as I was caring for ill husband.

( I didn't realise that six years in aged care with dementia and mainly disabled patients would be a godsend as a carer). I'm currently waiting for a postgrad program so hope one of the places has my name on it. I'd be interested in finding out just how much they expect of a new grad in these programs. Can anyone help? Frankly although there's some stuff I have learnt the hard way, I am a bit embarrassed about the vast amount I don't know so guess I'll be asking a lot of questions. I am looking forward to it but at 57, am also filled with some trepidation. Any advice and tips gratefully appreciated.:chair:

Hi hassled - welcome to the Oz section :)

What aspect of grad program expectations were you wanting to know about? What I mean is: did you want to know about hours/shift work stuff; patient load; orientation and support; study days, inservices and 'homework'; staff expectations of your initial knowledge and then how fast you pick up new information; or "yes, that! All of that!"
