as some of you may know i am now 33 weeks and 4 days pg. started having ptl at 23 weeks (was admitted to hosp. for contractions at that time- given ringers lactate iv for 3 days, macrobid bid x 10 days for possible uti, and started indomethacin 25mg q 6hr. round the clock.) anyway at around 27 weeks things had calmed down and although i kept having irregular contractions they stopped the indomethacin. well i went to see my high risk dr. for my check up last week at 32 weeks and to all of our suprise he found me to be funneling on the translady partsl ultrasound so he started me on nifedipine 10mg q 6 hr round the clock. today i went back to see him and he said my cervix is getting shorter still. it now measures 1.6 and at my first visit with him (back when i was 24 weeks) it was measuring 3.2. i am not dilating at this time but they went ahead and gave me the first betamethasone injection (ouch! :crying2: ) and i will get the second one tomorrow. they also upped my nifedipine to 20mg q 6 hr round the clock which is already giving me a headache and making me jittery and lightheaded. will this bottom me out? my bp was 116/62 today before i doubled up and that is a low bottom number for me. (usually 112 to 120 over 78 to 84)i guess my question is to anyone with experience with this kind of situation is there any way to tell how soon i will have this baby? i am reading alot of old posts on here that say the shots won't be effective after a week. so does that mean that the dr. thinks i am going to deliver next week? maybe i should't read so much. sorry so long but i am just worried that my little boy will be born too soon and have all kinds of problems. thanks for listening.

i have no advice as i am not a nurse yet, just wanted to say congrats on your pregnancy and to try not to worry too much, think about how far you've come (24 to 34 weeks is awsome!) try not to stress out and take it one day and one hour at a time! each hour that passes is more nourishment that your body is giving your baby and if he comes a bit early, try to focus on all the time he has spent being in the womb being well cared for and think positively! by the way i have 2 friends who recently gave birth to twins and both delivered at 35 weeks and had 4-5 pound babies that were healthy and got to go home with a few days! So take heart it CAN be ok. Hugs to you and prop those feet up and rest!

At 33+ weeks your little one will most likely be perfectly fine. There is no way to tell when you will give birth, and I am sure you must be anxious and worried, but as an NICU nurse I would be happy with a 33+ week pregnancy (the doc is giving you the steroids as a precaution, I know more than a few patients who had the shots and didn't deliver for more than one week!). The vast majority of those kiddies have a short hospital stay and go home happy and healthy.

My understanding and someone please correct me if I am wrong is that the shots PEAK in one week but that your baby will still get some benefit from them if you deliver after that week. At 35 weeks they wouldn't even give you the shots because by that time the babies lungs should be well enough developed.

In a week your baby will be 34 4/7 wks, and most of those babies do great! I had my daughter at 35 1/7 wks and she had absolutely NO problems related to prematurity. Please try to just relax and stay calm, enjoy this time in your pregnancy and think positively.

Keep us updated on how you are doing!! Good luck!

i didn't have funneling but i was 4cm dialated at 35 weeks. i was taken off bedrest at 36 weeks and dialated another cm. everyone expected me to have the baby as soon as i was up and about. talk about a long week. i had her at 37 weeks. at 32 weeks with #2, they didn't think i would make it to 33 weeks, i had him at 39. with #3, i had a cervix that measure 1.2, if i remember correctly and less than 2 anyway, very early in my pg and had him at 36 weeks, when my cnm stripped my membranes due to pih.

there really is no way to tell when. some women who don't look like they will deliver for a while deliver days later and some who look like they will deliver right away can fool you. and as the others said at nearly 34 weeks most babies do well.

take care of yourself and wishing you a long (but not too long) pregnancy.

I have no advice (but it sounds like you got some great info. here!) I just wanted to wish you luck and reiterrate what others here have said. My step-granddaughter was born at 34 weeks and turned out perfectly with no steroids! Keep us up to date...wishing you all the best in the rest of your pregnancy and delivery.
