We never have enough nurses at our hospital!

It seems that we never have enough nurses where I work and I'm working all the time to cover shifts but still they have to call in agency nurses. They've already hired new grads but need more experienced nurses to apply.

I'm tired from working all the time and am taking a break this week. If they could, the nursing supervisor would call me in 7 days a week, that's how badly we need nurses.

I know we have a tremendous glut of nurses in San Diego and probably in all of California so I don't understand why our hospital is always short? I'm covering med/surg, tele and rehab. They are also short in ICU, ER and OB. I just finished a four week telemetry class and several of the nurses in class said they also being called in 6 and 7 days a week and didn't have time to study for the class. So really it's the entire hospital that is short. What's the deal? I'm overworked! :dead:

What hospital do u work at?? We will be moving to San Diego after the holidays and I have 8 years RN experience. I keep hearing how its so difficult to find a job there. Also how is the pay? Cost of living is high so I'm hoping pay is to.

Paradise Valley Hospital in National City. I was at UCSD today and the nurse there said that for every position they get over 200 applicants. It's easier to get a job at PVH because it's a small hospital and so many people don't know it exists. (Like the nurse today that I was talking with)

I never heard of it either! I would apply but I'm a bit too far! (Orange County) I hope you guys get some help soon! Sounds like they should spend just a little time advertising their positions to give you all a break!

SD has a glut of new grads, but not so much in experienced nurses.....and hospitals aren't willing to pony up the money required to train the new grads....

Same issue at my facility that the OP has: they're always talking about how we need nurses in nearly every specialty/department and they are constantly advertising their positions...it may not always be on the plum shifts--day shift almost never has any staffing issues--but there are needs.

Of course, new grads would probably be more than happy to jump in and fill those needs, but the only way new grads can break into my facility is via the new grad program.

Trust me, as a new grad in San Diego, I'd be more than happy to help if anyone would give me the time of day :)

I have looked on their website and have found no job postings for RN's. Do you feel it would be best to go to the HR department to inquire about job employment at Paradise Valley Hospital? I have 5 years LVN experience, 1 year RN experience but non in an acute care setting (SNF, Sub-Acute, Urgent Care, and Outpatient Clinics). I'm having a hard time getting into a hospital. I've applied online to all of Alvarado's RN job postings ( I meet minimum qualifications) and they haven't even viewed my applications.
