We need a Nursing TV show

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Boy there are lots of scenarios in our world. Doctors and ER folks have "ER", MD's have "Scrubs"-so I think we should have a TV show. Maybe a show about life in an acute care med-surg nursing unit, we see everyone for alot-even got a couple of pregnant ladies--and I've only been in med-surg for 7 mo! That would show the public what we all about! Let's discuss.......... Episode 1 is an intro to lets say, 7West...........

It's not one of those Mtv Real World show? They stick the cameras everywhere? In the bathroom, bedroom and etc.? :p

It's not the same as a regular tv show but there will be a web-cast Nursing tv show at nursetv.com. It's supposed to air soon. They are putting 6 nurses in a house together and will be video taping their travel assignments in Cali.
Specializes in heading for NICU.

No, it's not the real word mtv type show...lol...

This show is being put out by a travel nursing company and they are going to follow the nurses around to show the world what nurses really do. Each nurse will be in CA for a 13 week assignment. Should be interesting. I'll watch it when it airs. The cast of 6 is a real 'mix' of people from different backgrounds.

The show definitely could not be in the General Hospital format! It would have to depict the real life tragedies and triumphs of nursing... Real nurses playing the parts of nurses. There are a lot of talented acting nurses in this country (unfortunately, I'm not one of them). No steamy sex scenes with docs; just true to life frustrations in dealing with the politics of nursing and the absolute joy of having made a difference in someone's life. MAN.. WHAT A HIT!

and that Mediao image is the last thing we need right now. You can portray nurses as sexual beings without having their tits half popped out of their uniforms. It was a stupid show written by and for sexually adolescent males who had no idea who nurses are and what we do. Its run was mercifully short because the writing was nearly as deplorable as the acting skills on that show.

We deserve better.

it was called Nightengales-but the nurses of America at the time felt

nurses should not be nurses and have sex

With all these STUPID VH1 reality shows, surely a real show with (gasp) REAL live nurses is not out of line?

Or how about a nurse caring for an AML patient, with neutropenic fever, and a lovely undiagnosed case of VRE, who enters the patient's room in gown, mask and gloves to perform some form of care, and is followed in by the APN who works with the Leukemia doctor, and the APN is only wearing gown and gloves.

APN: "And why are we wearing a mask.."?

nurse: "Ms. X is on neutropenic precautions, as well as contact isolation.."

APN: "oh.. well. WE don't wear masks around our patients on the leukemia floor.." (trying to cover her yuck up in front of the patient)

nurse: *sneeze"

APN: *blank stare*

nurse: "I'd hate for her to catch my cold. And besides, I think it looks pretty good on me."

One of the longest-running T.V. shows about nurses was on ABC back in the late-50's-early 60's was simply called "The Nurses". The central character starred Zina Bethune, and followed her from her early days as a student nurse and after she graduated and became an R.N. I used to watch it, dreaming of the day when I would become a nurse just like her. A bit soap-operish, but I didn't care. Those were the days....

all of a sudden Aussie rocks! we have All Saints this great show that's based in the ER of a sydney hospital. it used to be set on ward 17, which seemed to get everything from CVAs to Gunshot wounds to Paeds, but the ward got closed due to budgeting issues. they get understaffed, they fight with hospital officials, they fight with the doctors, they have petty differences, and they go to the pub after work for a drinkypoo or two. it's great![/quote']

I wonder if Ebay have someone selling this serie on DVD?

I would be very interested!

As for the whole idea and all comments are just "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!

Did someone mentionned: "you are starting shortstaffed, the nursing supervisor who "dumps on 2 admits at the time is on tonight". No secretary, no PCA. 5 mins after getting report, 2 patients are coding and 1 is yours,

your other pt is ... active upper GI bleed, :barf02: needing is 2 units of PRBC STAT in a pressure bags (because he's having chest pain and a systolic of 77, flat in bed, pox 90% on NRM...)...The call-lights and phone are going off, the visitors are still waiting for stuff outside the rooms(like-saving stuff like ice, tissues or for you to call the MD him, because they need to talk to them again ). You are still doing CPR. That's what you call multi-tasking!!!

You wished you had not eaten that chinese food thought!!!!

All the emotional issues, telling the family about the grim outcome, the difficult-know-it-all-daughter-in-a-panic-state says:"no-don't-take-your-potassium-daddy-that's-what-they-give-for-executions!" OH! Nurse, did I mentioned that I know the attorney-general and such-such Dr.Smith?

How about the VIP's that refuse to respect visiting hours, and are interfering and questioning everything you are doing, although it's been explained 10 times by 10 differents MD_NP_RN.

You are too busy to take care of the 5 family members, you got to save lives. And you got to bring that temp of 105 fast before he seizes. Lots PVC's and a K level of 2.1. :deadhorse :lol_hitti :smiley_ab :selfbonk:

The frustration of looking for pumps, dressings, no pharmacist at night, trying to give emotional support to the mother of the SOB-scared-anxious-in-pain child which the MD perforated a lung placig a central line. The child need a chest tube and the only surgeon available (night shift) is the same MD that caused the pneumo!

You heard it?! The one that was yelling "give me a straw {to cut the ties}", "Let me out of this hotel, the service is rotten! Or, "they are keeping me against my will for my organs.!"

The tied-up Houdini managed to get out of restraints anyways!

You heard it, that sound when the pt falls and hit their head on the floor, blown pupils, hematoma. Good night Irene :crying2:

And how about the 99 year old who says:"no, thanks, I don't need anything else, go take care of the sick ones!!!! I'll be all right!

Lastly, great tool to teach people: "Yes, if you have chest pain at 35 years old, go to the ER STAT. Same with the numbness, all those signs of CVA could be blasted over and over... The public needs to be more informed on these basic elements. As well as not to show up with the broken toe in the ER.

And NO WE ARE NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY, HAVE NO FREE INSURANCE, HAVE VERY RARELY A LUNCH NOR TINKLE BREAK...

BUT... WE ALL LOVE WHAT WE ARE DOING "

Where can you spend all your birthdays, anniversaries, holidays with all your friends, year after year! :balloons:

Yep, Australia's looking pretty good on the nursing-representation front. :)

A few years ago the ABC also had a series called "Children's Hospital", set in Sydney, that focused on the experiences of graduate nurses - no sex with doctors, bimbo outfits or eau de toilet-soaked hankies!

This year there's the new SBS six part drama "RAN: Remote Area Nurse" - about the only nurse on a tiny, remote island off Australia's coast. And I don't know if this counts, but Bruno, one of the three main characters on "Last Man Standing" is a nurse. Every now and then we're shown part of his life at work. It's not exactly a compelling portrait of the life of a nurse, but he's a regular guy, and in no way a stereotype.

The cream of the crop, of course, is "All Saints" - created by a former nurse, it's been on the air since 1998. Not always wholly realistic (my hospital's never been blown up, under seige by a gunman, had mysterious murderers prowling around), it nonetheless gives a great portrayal about many of the aspects of real life nursing. Season one's available on DVD.

What I particularly liked this year was that "All Saints" was the lead in for a half hour reality program called "Medical Emergency" - hosted by Georgie Parker (former charge nurse of ward 17 at Western general, the "All Saints" hospital), it looked at the nursing, medical and ambulance officers in the emergency department of a major metropolitan hospital.

There's an interesting article about the difference between nurses' depiction in the US and Australia: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/11/19/1069027181283.html?from=storyrhs In particular:

Australian nurses may be less inclined to react against ER because we have a home grown hospital series that sets an excellent example. "Early on we had discussions with the makers of All Saints about our view of how nurses should be represented," said Iliffe [national secretary for the Australian Nursing Federation], "and I'm confident that show does not portray nurses inaccurately."

The main character in Seven's All Saints is nursing unit manager Terri Sullivan, played by Georgie Parker, who has won several Logies for the role. She's cool, competent and charismatic, although Parker also describes her as "daggy". Most of the sexual shenanigans and demeaning behaviour in the All Saints hospital are performed by doctors.

There was a series called "Nurse" about 25 years ago, starring Michael Learned who had played the mother in "The Waltons". The series and the star were both excellent; in fact she won an Emmy for it. Unfortunately, it seems that the series was too intelligent because it was cancelled after a year.
