We need a Nursing TV show

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Boy there are lots of scenarios in our world. Doctors and ER folks have "ER", MD's have "Scrubs"-so I think we should have a TV show. Maybe a show about life in an acute care med-surg nursing unit, we see everyone for alot-even got a couple of pregnant ladies--and I've only been in med-surg for 7 mo! That would show the public what we all about! Let's discuss.......... Episode 1 is an intro to lets say, 7West...........

Discovery or the Learning Channel have shown a reality show called "Nurses". They occasionally rerun the series.

I've seen that show. It's not bad when they actually show nurses doing something other than working the maternity ward.

RANT ON: As a guy who is studying to be a nurse, it always baffles me why everytime I turn on Discovery Health it shows nurses helping to deliver babies. Of course I'm not down-playing the role, but there's a lot more out there than delivering babies. Why can't we see Flight Nurses in action? Or maybe a few more shows on ER nurses? Or why aren't there more scenes in TV shows where an off-duty NURSE comes to the rescue as opposed to always a docotor? Personally, I think this is the reason why Nursing is looked at as a profession for only women. MOST of the time when I see a nurse on TV they're either in the maternity ward or complaining about their love life or family life (both incidences I've seen on the Nurses program on Discovery Health).

I DEFINITELY love the Aussie's idea of meeting up at the pub after a shift and relaxing a bit with a pint. That won't work here in the States though since it doesn't play to the nurse stereotype.

RANT OFF

Specializes in Medical.

SemperFI, there have been shifts where a drink at the pub's been the only thing that got all the staff throgh to handover!

I'm with you on the delivery thing, too.

There was a series called "Nurse" about 25 years ago, starring Michael Learned who had played the mother in "The Waltons". The series and the star were both excellent; in fact she won an Emmy for it. Unfortunately, it seems that the series was too intelligent because it was cancelled after a year.

You're right Clichay, there was a series titled "Nurse" with Michael Learned, I don't remember much about it because it was on only briefly before it was cancelled.

Day 1..."The new Grad"

Episode synopsis: New Grad Joe and New Grad Sara come out of orientation and begin working on a busy med surg floor. After a patient code, Joe and Sara deal with the issue of life and death and how it impacts them as new nurses.

And unfortunately in today's world.....(this is what it would turn into)

Joe and Sara then retire the the breakroom for a heated session of sex still "high" from post-code adrenaline. Two and a half months later Joe is now sleeping with Glenda and Sara has found out that she is pregnant with Joe's child...but how does she get an abortion without her coworkers finding out...blah blah blah....

I can't stand the medical shows on TV...everybodys sleeping with everybody else and on and on and on.....but if I had to vote for a favorite..It'd be SCRUBS....

:rotfl:

While I like the crusty "House" character,I never see nurses portrayed as more than runners. The doctors draw blood, start IVs,titrate drips, take vital signs, hook patients up to O2 and monitors,etc,etc,etc....so UNLIKE real life, where the nurses tell(or "suggest"-in the passive-aggressive way we do) the docs what drips to hang, what labs to draw, what meds to give.

I wonder if Ebay have someone selling this serie on DVD?

I would be very interested!

As for the whole idea and all comments are just "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!

Did someone mentionned: "you are starting shortstaffed, the nursing supervisor who :dumps" on 2 admits at the time is on tonight, no secretary, no PCA. 5 mins after getting report 2 patients are coding and 1 is yours,

your other pt is ... active upper GI bleed, :barf02: needing is 2 units of PRBC STAT in a pressure bags (because he's having chest pain and a systolic of 77, flat in bed, pox 90% on NRM...)...The call-lights and phone are going off, the visitors are still waiting for stuff outside in the halls(ice, tissues, for you to call the MD, who is at home, because they need to talk to them again ).

You wished you had not eaten that chinese food!!!!

All the emotional issues, telling the family about the grim outcome, the difficult-know-it-all(no-don't-take-your-potassium-daddy-that's-what-they-give-for-the-executions) daughter-in-panic-state, that know the attorney-general and such-such Dr.Smith. These that refuse to respect visiting hours, (and are interfering and questioning everything you are doing, although it's been explained 10 times by 10 differents MD_NP_RN. You are too busy to take care of the 5 family members, you got to save lives. And you got to bring that temp of 105 fast before he seizes. Lots PVC's and a K level of 2.1. :deadhorse :lol_hitti :smiley_ab :selfbonk:

The frustration of looking for pumps, dressings, no pharmacist at night, trying to give emotional support to the mother of the SOB-scared-anxious-in-pain child which the MD perforated a lung placig a central line. The child need a chest tube and the only surgeon available (night shift) is the same MD as the TLC incident...

You heard it (the one that was yelling "give me a straw {to cut the ties}", "Let me out of this hotel, the service is rotten, they are keeping me against my will for my organs... the tied-pt Houdini managed to get out of restraints...

You heard it, that sound when the pt falls and hit their head on the floor, blown pupils, hematoma. Good night Irene :crying2:

And how about the 99 year old who says:"no, thanks, I don't need anything else, go take care of the sick ones!!!! I'll be all right!

Lastly, great tool to tell people: "Yes, if you have chest pain at 35 years old, go to the ER STAT. Same with the numbness, all those signs of CVA could be blasted over and over... The public needs to be more informed on these basic elements. As well as not to show up with the broken toe in the ER.

And NO WE ARE NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY, HAVE NO FREE INSURANCE, HAVE VERY RARELY A LUNCH NOR PI BREAK...

BUT... WE ALL LOVE WHAT WE ARE DOING "

Where can you spend all your birthdays, anniversaries, holidays with all your friends, year after year! :balloons:

:yelclap: couldn't have said it better...sounds like you work at my hospital!
