  1. Good luck in trying to find a job anywhere in Denver as a new grad. Forget what you hear about the nursing shortage. It doesn't exisist here.
  2. I guess I never provided follow-up, but earlier this summer I sent out a note on this BB about me being number 5 on Regis' wait list for their Nursing program. I just wanted to update everyone and say that I got in. In fact, I spoke to a fellow student who said they got the call from Regis just a week ago to let them know they got in. When I asked her what number she was on the list, she said 15. So I guess number 5 wasn't bad after all. Oh, btw, did I mention I've already asked myself what the hell have I gotten myself in to? LOL
  3. I strongly suggest you reconsider your position. It really doesn't sound like nursing school is going to "fit" into your schedule, at least not while you're here in Colorado. Wait lists are usually long; acceptance rates are quite low and VERY competitive; classes are brutal. GL in whatever you decide to do.
  4. I second what tlackey said. As long as you aren't applying to Regis or CU, you should be fine. In fact, at the information session I attended at CU, there was a gentleman in the audience that had the same problem. They flat out told him that it would be best that he didn't apply. So, he got up and left. The community colleges are will you'll probably have to apply with a less than 3.0 GPA. The only bad thing is the 2-3 year waits at some of them. Good luck on whatever you decide.
  5. I just found out that I'm 5th on the list. Guess that's better than 10th.
  6. Okay gang, I need your help in sending me positive thoughts and to keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm on Regis' stand-by list for the fall semester. I applied to both CU's and Regis' nursing programs, but only got an acceptance letter from Regis (well, partial acceptance). I know I'm lucky to even get on the alternate list, but it would be nice to get a letter from Regis soon letting me know I'm in. I have to admit, I was happy to see the post from TKBSN2b and how she/he decided to go with UCDHSC, vice Regis. Not only does it honestly make good financial sense (they're both VERY good programs), but it brings me one step closer to that acceptance letter. Again, keep your fingers crossed for me please and send me your positive vibes. LOL Semper Fi
  7. AWESOME! Thanks for the response Jules. After graduation from Nursing school, I was going to go into the ER, but now I'm thinking of the OR so I can more easily work my way into a job at a plastic surgeon's office. If anything else, the environment and ambiance at a plastic surgeon's office appear to be nicer than at a typical hospital.
  8. After working 16 years in a professional office setting, the same could be said there. No matter where you go, there will ALWAYS be someone, or a group of someones, trying to trip you up....especially if they see you as a threat to them getting a promotion, raise, pats on the back, etc. Thanks to my father's influence, I'm ornery as hell in these types of situations. When I come across someone trying to play the "antagonist" role, I L-O-V-E to turn the tables on them. The more frustrated I make them, the happier I am. They eventually see that their "posturing" only serves MY interest and not theirs so they'll just stop altogether. All things considered I'd rather not play this game at all, but if you're gonna yank a dog's chain, you gotta expect to get bitten.
  9. I'm soooo glad to see this post. I selected this particular part of the website to post a question regarding the same thing. I also would like to have more info regarding plastic surgeon's hiring OR nurses. I live in CO atm and I have to say that I'm shocked that the hospitals here are only paying $20/hr for nurses with BSN degrees. I'm ASSUMING (we know what happens when you do that), that a plastic surgeon's office would pay more for their nurses. I suppose I could make a few phone calls to a few plastic surgery businesses and ask a few general questions. If I do, I'll post some info. In the meantime if anyone has further info, please share. Thanks.
  10. Johny1, you are my hero! If the world had a bulletin board for all to see, I would post it there. It's been a long time since I've heard such wise words coming from a guy, and I'm a guy.
  11. I've applied to both Regis and UCHSC. Waiting to hear from one of them in the next few months. I haven't noticed anyone talking about Regis. Anyone go there and what were your experiences like? TIA
  12. Congrats to all those accepted. You are among the VERY LUCKY FEW. Hope u don't take it for granted.
  13. Howdy Gents! I've worked in the gov't for 15 years and have decided to head into nursing. It was a decision that was a few years in the making. My wife has a few more years in the gov't than I do (she's an engineer) and thanks to her income, we can afford to send me to school for my BSN. I made this decision even though I've read many, many, many posts that talk about nurses eating their young. I absolutely hate that expression by the way! That said, I haven't seen the same number of complaints being generated by the men. Most seem more satisfied in their nursing careers than the women. My question is, do you guys FREQUENTLY have similar problems with fellow nurses? I mean, we all have run-ins with co-workers every now and then. Hell, EVERY office setting or job environment will have that. But it just seems 10x worse in the nursing environment. I've had fleeting thoughts about dropping nursing and going into a different career (Financial advisor maybe), but I've never run in fear before from anything I've wanted to do, so why start now? Right? I figure if I can walk off of Parris Island with a smile on my face and the Eagle, Globe and Anchor on my uniform, I can do anything. SFi
  14. I've seen that show. It's not bad when they actually show nurses doing something other than working the maternity ward. RANT ON: As a guy who is studying to be a nurse, it always baffles me why everytime I turn on Discovery Health it shows nurses helping to deliver babies. Of course I'm not down-playing the role, but there's a lot more out there than delivering babies. Why can't we see Flight Nurses in action? Or maybe a few more shows on ER nurses? Or why aren't there more scenes in TV shows where an off-duty NURSE comes to the rescue as opposed to always a docotor? Personally, I think this is the reason why Nursing is looked at as a profession for only women. MOST of the time when I see a nurse on TV they're either in the maternity ward or complaining about their love life or family life (both incidences I've seen on the Nurses program on Discovery Health). I DEFINITELY love the Aussie's idea of meeting up at the pub after a shift and relaxing a bit with a pint. That won't work here in the States though since it doesn't play to the nurse stereotype. RANT OFF
  15. When I was a child I remember reading a poster in my father's place of business. It read - "If the human mind can conceive it and believe it, then the human body can achieve it." Can you do it? Of course you can....as soon as you've convinced yourself you can do it. Like it's been said before, how badly do you want it? As for the physical pain, you might want to see a PT for it. Maybe they can help you with sitting up a series of stretches and exercises to strengthen that area. By the way, I'm 37 yrs old and just recently took a sabattical from work so I can go back to school and get my BSN. Like you, I sat in front of a computer all day, so it's going to be an interesting switch to say the least. If you like, I can contact my former Drill Instructor from bootcamp for you. I have no doubt that he can help train you in making a bed with proper hospital corners. :chuckle
