We got into the CLC Nursing program...now what

Published

OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! :lol2: When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?

I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.

And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need? :uhoh3:

Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!

Diedra,

Are you saying that you got the flexible binder to be the one that you carry the current info & modules for classes/clinical? The other avery binders are just for separating them at home? You'll be switching from the "home binder" to the "active" binder as we work thru the modules?

I do not have binders yet, could not figure out how I wanted to it, but, I'm liking this idea.

I bought the books today. I also got the Med/Surg book :pumpiron:(my son) & the Maternal/Newborn nursing book. My Med/Surg book was also marked as used, but looks new & the CD was not even opened.

830 sounds good to me too.

Vicki

you don't need the med/surge book until 3rd semester and by then they'll probably be using a newer edition. it's hard to find the required texts used because editions are changing constantly and people don't sell theirs back because they use them throughout the program.

maybe they've changed this?? i mean, why would they say it is required for nur171 if you won't use it until nur271? not that i'm doubting you, but i'm hoping they have changed something because i will be pretty p.o.'d if they told me a textbook was required, i bought it because they said to, and then they require a new edition by the time we finally get to it. wow, that would really tick me off!

Vicki:

Yep...I got the Avery binders to keep at home. Some Modules are bigger than others so this will allow me to keep one or more in my "take to school" binder. Right now I have the following in the Flex binder:

* packet that says "Universal Self-care - has the calendar in it

* Module AA

* Module A1

* Module A2

* 6 dividers (2 are a bit bulkier than the others)

* 80 sheets notebook paper

I feel like I could still put more in if I had to, but I thought this looked like enough.

Diedra

Hey all. My binders are all 2 inches I like it to have room. I bought those flex binders for last semester so if it doesn't work out with the binders being to bulky-I can always try the 5 star flex thing, whatever it is called.

I bought the med-surg and maternal newborn books on line at amazon.com under used, like new and I got the newborn one and It is beautiful, brand new with the cd. ALOT Cheaper.

I have been reading today, oh my god, I knew the reading was alot, but I guess you don't understand until you do it. Some of the chapters are so long. I started at the first module AA and looked at some of the reading on that and started there, some of the books I don't have and are on the list as optional, so I don't know if I will ever have them, so I just read the chapter in Potter and Perry. I love reading about this stuff, I just hope it all comes together in the classes. It is hard to imagine doing some of this stuff and understanding, really understanding it, until we talk it through and do it. Class is still 2 weeks away and its already started. Did any of you who signed up for the BLS for Healthcare class on the 12th get that book yet? When I went it was unavailiable.

Lori--My daugher is also acting up...wouldn't it figure. Maybe we need to have a little co op babysitting for each other- to let the other get some reading done, while the other has play time. My daughter is 4 years old and loves to play.

When I took to CPR class through the college NO ONE else but my daughter and I had the book. I had already opened mine, but I sold Carolyn's. If you want, I'll look for mine - you can borrow it. I doubt you'll need it, but you'd have one in case your teacher is different. Just let me know, and I'll look for it. I'm pretty sure I know where it is, but you know how thing grow legs and walk away!!

This will not happen to you. The textbook list that you receive during your first semester will not change during the course of the program, assuming that you pass each semester. The nursing department staff should make this clear to you during orientation, and they will also identify which books are used during the first semester and which books can be purchased down the road. The bookstore list is typically not accurate in this respect.

there really is no lecture so if you don't have one already you may want to save your money. the "lecture" class is for test taking, getting handouts passed out to you, and group discussion of scenarios pertaining to the modules (class guides). the only "lecture" is the teacher reading the power point to you that is at the back of your modules.

i second this. digital recorders are useful for some students, especially students who speak english as a second language, but my advice would be to sit through class for several weeks before spending money on all kinds of gadgets and tools. you're not going to be inundated with lectures and note taking. in two semesters, i think i've only taken notes twice (i filled up two notebooks in a&p, for comparison's sake). i received a very nice digital recorder as a gift before i started nursing school, but it was stolen mid-semester. i was disappointed, but i haven't felt the slightest inclination to replace it. if you have electronic gadgets and have used them for other classes with success, then you'll probably find them useful. if not, i doubt that you'll find yourself lost or somehow lacking without them.

also, keep in mind that in 171, it's almost a month before there is a consistent, "normal" routine in class. the class format is really quite different from the traditional college class, so it's difficult to know what you'll need or what will be useful to you until you actually get a feel for how the program works. different things work for different people.

on a more general note, it seems as though clc nursing students at all levels, myself included, are constantly soliciting advice or information from more advanced students. it's important to recognize that not all of this advice and information will be accurate, encouraging or helpful. take everything that you hear with a grain of salt.

I didn't have the book either...I went to get it before the class not knowing the bookstore was closed, so I didn't have a choice, but it was fine.

So, to all who took the BLS for healthcare how does the class work? Is it all just listening to lecture, do you need a notebook? Is there a written test too? I just get worried when I don't have the books they stay I need. Maybe if its the same book I could borrow it from Diedra,if you can find it. Let me know if you do. Thanks so much, gals

For those of you with Palms - I ordered 2 programs from Skyscape. I went with the "Nursing Constellation" and "Taber's". I had them put it on a SD card. It was only $25.00 for the card reagardless of how many programs I ordered, so my total was $154.91. I haven't gotten it yet, should get it in the next day or so.

Diedra - did you get your software yet? I am probably going to go with the same as you, but want to know what you think of it so far. Also, what made you choose the Taber's dictionary vs. the Mosby's? I'm not too familiar with the pros/cons of either one, and am curious how you made your decision.

Can you believe I haven't even plugged in my Palm T/X yet??? John bought me a laptop for my bday last summer, and it came loaded with Windows Vista (vs. Windows XP). I've heard all kinds of horror stories regarding trying to use the Palm T/X with Vista, and have had tons of trouble with Vista anyhow, so today John is taking my laptop to his corporate office in IN to have his IT guy uninstall Vista and install XP. Thank goodness!

Any others who have the Palm? What software have you chosen to go with?

Since we'll be in the class together, mind if I look over your shoulder and share Diedra's book?

Vicki, you took the class recently, and I seem to remember that you didn't have the book either, right?
