We got into the CLC Nursing program...now what

Published

OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! :lol2: When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?

I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.

And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need? :uhoh3:

Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!

WOW!!!

You guys really know how to motivate a person. Thanks for the pep talk. I go thru this with almost all my classes - but this is sooo big.

RE: the voice recorder- I decided not to get one. I thought it would be helpful & I thought I saw it on that long list that was posted for supplies. Thanks for the input.

I go for my physical tomorrow & I have my last Hep. shot that I need to get & I'm done with all that. I love to check things off the to do list.

Vicki

Hey Diedra, did you need you kids to help you w/ the books?

I'm thinking maybe I should go while mine are here to help me? I just printed off the list of books & I am confused.

What books are in the bundle? I hope it is not all of the required ones because I have already purchased the modules, handbook & the dictionary.

I thought I was the only one with a "to do/done" list...LOL

So, I just called the darn bookstore and they don't have ANY used bundles, only new. So, here is my question - why would they list a flippin' used price if they don't have any???? That's a lot of money...especially when you have to take it out of your own pocket!!! So, I'm not going to rush to get it if there are no perks to me as far as getting a used bundle before the rush! I have a few weeks to make sure I have the money for it...it's all good! I figured at orientation too they would tell us when we'll need which of the "required" books.

Specializes in Cardiac ICU.

just got back from a trip to clc to pay tuition and check out the bookstore. spoke to another nursing student who is starting her 2nd semester. this is what i found out: on pg 143 of our handbook it lists the required texts. (the one with the * are included in the bundle). however, according to the 2nd semester student, the brunner & suddarth's, contemporary maternal-newborn nursing care, health promotion through the life span and gerontological nursing and healthy aging are the required texts for 2nd semester.

all the books published by mosby/elevesair (sp?) are in the bundle. all bundled books are new. used bundle does not exist. if the book you want is not on the shelf, then it is included in the bundle. this includes the ever so popular potter & perry. so, if you're like me and you're trying to save some money by buying on ebay, amazon, and such...keep up the hunt for the books you need. don't know if the mosby books will ever be sold individually.

hope this helps - looking forward to seeing/meeting you all monday!

Carolyn carried the box - she thought it felt like it was 60 lbs. We actually put it on the scale when we got home, it was 42 lbs. I called her a whimp!!! I think it feels heavier cuz it's in a box and therefore not the easiest to grasp.

When I was there it didn't appear to me that they had many used books for nursing. I went ahead and got the bundle mainly cuz I had Carolyn to carry it and I'm a NERD (gotta have it right away)! Plus, I'm assuming that we will be assigned reading to do inbetween orientation and the start of school. Not sure though - I hope I'm wrong!!

For those of you with Palms - I ordered 2 programs from Skyscape. I went with the "Nursing Constellation" and "Taber's". I had them put it on a SD card. It was only $25.00 for the card reagardless of how many programs I ordered, so my total was $154.91. I haven't gotten it yet, should get it in the next day or so.

As far as where to meet at orientation: we could all sit in row 7, seat 8 through 13! Just kidding! Why don't we meet somewhere before - like maybe in front of Something's Brewing. Isn't the room we need to be in just around the corner in the Technology section? Something's Brewing is right around the corner. I think the only one's we will have trouble finding is Lori and Bonnie - right??

Diedra,

We do have an assignment before the first day of class. There are no classes on Mon. 1/21 due to MLK day - 1/22 says that sections 1-4 are to complete activities from orientation letter & module A1 to be prepared for Wed 1/23.

Not sure if you saw the calender-it's in the first section of the module stack.

Vicki

Hey all!! I went to pay tuition and get the bundle, Diedra you are right what a load. It was very ackward to carry, but I had to have it also, I just want to start reading. I think we will be good friends, I am a total nerd also. I ordered most all else required on amazon, it was cheaper.

I will have to check out those program from Skyscape, I got one program that was on our list as optional, one of the drug refrences, though it would be good to have handy. I look at different drugs each time I see a commercial or something, I am a way bigger nerd!!! I am all for meeting up at the wonderful coffee cart....I am one of their best customers, before the orientation. We could all wear something red or something or just grab a table and make a sign that reads friends of Allnurses.

Diedra, what is a SD card you were referring too? Is it a memory card thing?

Well, off to make dinner

Thanks all

Heather

Hi all!

Well at least I guess the weight of "the bundle" will make it seem a bit more worth the cost. I remember my first semester when I bought my biology book and my Intro to Medical Imaging book and I about fainted over the cost of two measly paperback type books. Hopefully these have some heft to them!

So, did you ladies that purchased the bundle get the other required books too? I was thinking of getting the bundle now (I too want to peek ahead a bit), and then waiting on getting the other required books until after orientation. I seem to remember someone on this site saying that you don't need all of the required books at the beginning of the semester... The one saving grace is that I peeked ahead to the books for 172, 271 and 272 - minimal compared to this first semester for sure!!!

I think hooking up before Orientation by the Somethings Brewing cart is a great idea! Everyone know where that is? Also, as far as going out afterwards... I'm fine with whatever. If you just want to go for coffee that's cool, or we could go for a bite to eat (perhaps a celebratory cocktail?!?). Whatever works for all of you. I can't wait to meet Lori and Boni - I think I know the rest of you already!

Kind of an off topic question.... My daughter is trying to talk my sister and I into getting a tattoo with her. This January 10th marks the 15th anniversary of my mom passing away from ovarian cancer. My daughter found a tattoo of a beautiful butterfly, and the body of the butterfly is a cancer ribbon. She thought it would be a great tribute to my mom. Two things - 1.) The only time the 3 of us have to get together before my daughter goes back to school is this Sunday the 6th. Do you think anything about getting a tattoo will affect the drug screening? I can't imagine it would, but I'm paranoid! 2.) I've never had a tattoo before. Are they extremely painful? And is it silly for a 41 year old woman to get a tattoo???

Heather:

The SD card is the memory card thingy. I have dial-up still (nothing faster when you are in the boonies) so it would take 7 years to download for me.

Vicki:

I saw the calendar, but I'm still trying to make heads and tails out of it.

Colleen:

I would probably get a tattoo, but my hubby says I would have to sleep in my VW Thing. He hates them. It's funny too cuz Carolyn just started dating a guy with LOTS of tattoos!! So...I say go for it - it's for a good reason!

I only bought the bundle - I figured I'd wait and see what else I want/need.

What time do we want to meet? I'm open, I just don't want to walk into orientation with 5 minutes to spare. Also a celebratory cocktail is just fine with me!!

Hey, I love tatoos I have two of them and I am thinking of getting another one soon. I just got one one year ago this month and I want another one already....the butterfly one sounds great. It really helps if it is meaningful to you, you really have to be ok with this, you will have it forever. So, be sure you want it. It is painful, but nothing you cannot handle. The rule of thumb, the more fat on the area the less it will hurt, it hurts alittle bit more on bone. I have had both and it is true. I am so jealous. My husband doesn't really like them, but he figures if this is my only real vice, as long as I am not one big tattoo. You wouldn't even know I had mine unless I showed you.

I bought the bundle, and I ordered the rest of required on amazon. I just want them, I quess I figured they are required and the more info I have the better. If any one doesn't want to purchase them and if it is just a chapter or two that we need them for-I can make copies. I do not mind doing that. Who really knows if we need the whole book, or just a chapter here and there. We should be able to find that out at orientation.

I am looking at the books now, and now I am getting scared....I am going to be responsible for other peoples health and well being. That is scary. I will definately be reading the books.

The somethings brewing cart sounds good to me...is that the one over by the library or am I in the wrong area??? Also, how about afterwards we go to Bills Pub right down the road for a cocktail??? I will only do one more than likely as I need to pick my daughter up, so I obviously want to make sure I am ok!!! I don't drink at all, so having one will give me a buzz for sure! :lol2::uhoh3:

I have a tattoo. A rose with a peace sign on my right ankle...in my opinion, it didn't hurt...more of an annoying pain. You've had a child though - you can definitely handle it. I got mine in Lake Geneva and the guy was really good...took a break every now and then to let me gather my sanity!!! :trout:

Well, I am hoping to get my books soon...gotta wait for my husband to get some more money...it's always about the money!!!
