Hello...first post here..I was looking at the recent post as of late about getting your letter for acceptance. I was in the same shoes once before I applied for a fall 2004 start was denied, tried for the winter and denied, then I applied to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I was accepted I have just finished my first year in the program and have a year to go, then I will have my B.S.N.

Originally I thought I could only afford the community college, but with some investigation and allot of paperwork, it turns out that there is alot of financial aid out there especially for the health professions.

The point of this post is those that were not accepted, maybe set your sites a bit higher, I applied the Wayne County Nursing Program with a 3.9 and a 94 composite on the NET. I thought they must really be picky, I had the reference letters, met all the requirements and so forth. I was surprised that I got into U of M, but I am glad I did, granted it has made money tight, in the interim, but I looked at all options, if WCCCD doesn't work out look at other schools. Not all have waiting lists, seems the community colleges do with the exception of WCCCD.

Keep you chin up stay focused, and things have a tendency to work themselves out. I just wanted to share my story, maybe it will help someone, maybe not. In the end I am happy that I was denied, a new opportunity arose, and I couldn't be happier.

Thank you for sharing that with us. I personally needed to see that. I cannot believe they denied you with those scores. Something is amiss there with that school. They should not let outsiders take a spot over a WCCCD student. That is not fair. I know my friend had the same grades as me, and she got in to Wayne State U. I have always wanted to go to U of M but thought I could not afford it. I will try there. I thought I would take the chemistry classes at WCCCD this fall and winter and apply at other schools. I am not going to waste any more effort on our school's program. Once again thank you for posting and it makes me feel better. I felt so bad after reading that rejection letter. I worked very hard for two years and it felt like it was all for nothing. I will keep my head up and keep trying. Good luck to you at U of M. That is an awesome school and you will come out with great credentials and a job.

A few years back they used to not go from top grades to bottom but rather some for the A's Some for the B's and Some from the C's got in. They did it for diversity they said or something I am not sure but that is how they did it. It sounds like you may have applied when they were doing that system and I know a lot of people that didnt make it because of that. I am very happy that they are doing it from 4.0 down now though it seems a bit more fair to me, people with grades that are 4.0 and such usually are working their tails off to get that.

Anyway- Everyone you may want to check the requirments to get into nursing for the Jan. session. I have heard that they are going to start making a pre-req the CNA certification. Now mind you at WCCCD it is LONG and 10 CH! If it does become something you have to do be sure to check out Washtenaw Community college program as it is only 3 CH's and only 3 weeks (soild 8 hr days though). If it isnt in JAN that they require it I am thinking it will be next fall criteria. I heard this from the WCCCD CNA teacher and I know Washtenaw community college is going to be doing that as well.

I had previously stated that it is not fair that our school takes on other school's students ahead of us. When one door closes another one opens, and I have talked to many students who were in the nursing program. I personally am glad I was denied, because I have found out that the program is not all it is cracked up to be, it is unorganized, like military school, grueling scheduling for lectures and clinicals, and if you ever want to work at the V.A. hospital or out of the state of Michigan, your education does not support that through WCCCD's nursing program. I am finishing up my Associates of Science degree and moving on to the university. A program that is already accredited through the NLN., We all worked our tails off and just because someone gets a 4.0 does not mean that they will be a good nurse or do well in the program. I have known several 4.0's that failed WCCCD's nursing school or pulled themselves out, I have friends that graduated from WCCCD many years ago and are successful nurses to this day. It isn't about getting straight A's in your pre req's that makes you a great nurse, because once your in the real world, no one really cares what your GPA was in school. Like the old saying....what do you call a doctor who made C's in medical school? A doctor. I had all A's and B's and one C. I worked very hard for two years to apply to that program. I have seen a few posts on here that sound derogatory to anyone who had less than a 4.0, as if they did not work as hard as someone who probably took one class or two classes at a time to make that A. I took a full load, I have two children and a husband and at one point a full time job. So, I did work just as hard as anyone else doing their pre req's and so did my fellow students I went to class with.

I am tired of the pressure of ....you have to get all A's, I am moving on. My GPA is a good one that I am proud of. Well that is my two cents.

I heard something like this too, that WCCCD was going to require CNA cert, however, I called the Nursing Department, they advised that is not true, that often times instructors at the college, start rumors. They advised that, this winter, nor next fall that is going to be a requirement. Pass that, they wouldn't say. Thats all I heard. Just an FYI.

rntoben: not trying to sound like they are better then anyone else, it wasnt my intention... i didn't have a 4.0 and i wouldn't be overly anxious to retake the b's that i had either. the statements that i have made is if you don't have a 4.0 don't get your hopes up to high to get in, because that is how they made their program at wcccd, my intention with this comment is to always look forward and have alternate plans, not that you shouldn't do or even try but just be prepared. i knew a girl in my a&p class who was fantastic, she knew every ounce of that information cold, but when she went to take the tests she had major test anxiety...story goes she had a hard time even making a c in that class. gpa is not everything that is for sure... if you had bad teachers or whatever it doesn't show on the report...its just a piece of paper...but it just happens to be the only way they judge you at this particular program.

i am happy that you have a plan and it sounds solid, you surely know where you are going and i wish you the best.

as for the comment on the 4.0 down above i am glad they did it this way and not the lets take some from a's some from b's and some from c's it is unfortunate that you were a .xx from the cut off it sucks but it shows that you were there you should be damn proud of that, last semester you would of been in no problem. do i think you deserve to get in the program absolutely with no question in my mind. do i think the person who didn't get in with the 3.9 above was fair nope all because they did the a/b/c thing before, that was the comment i was making. it did work out better for her in the end as it sounds like it will work out in the end for you just as well as it would for anyone else who has the determination to do this.

anyway good luck and dont hesitate to come to this thread once you make it into uofm or wayne state or madonna,i would be highly interested in where you choose to go and the comparison of the programs (check madonna out as their program matches up really well with wcccd pre-req./co-req's).

Just checking in, for those accepted, what are you doing now? Are you getting CPR certified? What is the next step after getting accepted and did the celebrating.... . Hopefully I will be in your boat for the January semester.

Why do people LOVE to tell horror stories? I saw a girl who just started the nursing program at WCCCD last fall 2005. I asked her how it was going...why did I do that? She went on and on about how horribly hard it is, how tired she is, how strict they are, how she wish she picked something else, blah, blah, blah. I was like, so are you going to quit? she was like no, my opportunities will be endless when I finish....I will get thru it:confused: .

My thinking is, I understand it is a difficult course, BUT it will not last forever. What is the saying? "How do you eat a big pink elephant? One bit at a time." I dunno, maybe one day I will learn not to ask questions and just wait to form my own opinions:trout: .

This must have been the case years ago. I called the nursing department and asked them what would cause a person with a high GPA not to get into the program. They said most likely something was missing from thier application. At that point, thier application would go to the bottom of the pile. This brought up another question in my head but did not get a chance to ask..... I am wondering at that point, would someone with a lower GPA get in over someone with a higher GPA but with missing parts to thier application? Just wondering.

Well, I did get my CPR certification done this week as well as my physical and shots from my doctor. I'm just waiting on the results so they can document them on the health forms and I will start to celebrate once I finish my online classes around the beginning of August.

I signed up for the BLS cert. class at WCCCD at the begining of the summer semester just in case I got in. The class is on the 6th of August. I got blood work and started my Hep. B's a while ago but I have to go back and have him fill out this physical. I am going to the Health Department for the Hep. B's from now on because my doc charges 88.00 and my insurence wont cover them.

Dont worry to much of what others say at this point. I think we just need to hold onto this and do with it what we can, and dont start slacking just because we got in ya know.

I went through the BLS course that was listed in the acceptance letter. It was just 4hrs and the cost was only $50. Did you give HES a call?

q5gal, what i would recommend is to keep checking, especially in the first couple of days after school. also, i noticed that you have micro online, do you have dr. meyers? i'm asking because i have it as well and i think it may be the only one online this semester. i'm not sure, but let me know. we might be in the same class!
