Waste of Time?

My local CC offers a Pharmacology course. You do not need to be in the nursing program to take it. Should I take it before transferring for my BSN? Or is it a waste?

I wouldn't waste my money if I were you! Most colleges consider Pharmacology to be a "core" nursing course and won't take it as a transfer. I was originally at a 2 year college getting my pre-requisites and decided to transfer to a local 4 year University and found out that even though the college I was originally at had decided that Pharm didn't have to be a core class there the University I transfered to considers that to be a core "nursing" class. And that is how it is with all Universities in my area that offer BSN programs. So needless to say I'm stuck in Pharm! Again! But hey if you want to go ahead and take it just think of it as you will have a stronger foundation for when you do enter a nursing program! Good luck!

If you don't mind shelling out the extra cash and you have the time... GO FOR IT!!!! I did the same thing you did and took Pharm and Patho for "fun". And i'm glad I did it! Even though it was tough, but I didn't drown when nursing school started and I didn't feel as overwhelmed as the other students did.

Extra learning and knowledge is NEVER a waste of time!

The course description states this:

This course examines how drugs are processed and utilized in the body. A client's reactions to a drug both therapeutically and adversely are considered. Potential drug interactions are explored. Client education related to drug therapy is emphasized.

You need to make sure it would transfer to your BSN program. Schools can be very nit picky on which classes match theirs. So that one might not satisfy the one the BSN might require. (if they have one that isn't incorporated into the program). I would definitely get anything out of the way you can, but you want to make sure it will count.

I agree MividaLoca! But you know what? My school chose not to take neither course.... BUT at least I just looked at it as an opportunity to make an even better score on those classes the second time around (which I did)

We didn't have an option to take Pharm before hand. We had 2 semesters of it during our program, but we had the option to take Patho before hand and Nutrition. I was on a wait list anyway so I got all of it out of the way. But if the poster doesn't have that extra money to throw away (because it won't be accepted) then they might need to think about that. If that isn't an issue and they have nothing else going on, then by all means, I would take it and get that edge.
