Hi everyone!! I am starting BSN program at WSU (Yakima site) this fall.:balloons: My name is Peggy and I would love to hear from other Washington State students who are planning on starting their nursing programs this fall. SOOOO exciting!! :smiley_aa
Hi Thida, I live in our camper which I keep in Yakima during the week while I am in school, then home on the weekends. It isn't optimal, each week having to pack up and remember everything necessary for the upcoming week, however, it beats commuting! That commuting time is better spent as study time, not to mention the gas costs of commuting. My dear husband made a beautiful deck to attach to the camper while it is parked - allows me to bask outside while I focus on studies ---- ahhhh!
What I like the most about WSU-Yakima are the wonderful instructors. I am so impressed with the amount of time they are willing to spend with me. Also, their genuine love for nursing and teaching permiates throughout. What an honor to be able to learn from them!
What I like least is the WHETS. It is sort of a love/hate thing. I am very grateful for the technology (which allows me to attend nursing school) and at the same time, the technology isn't perfect and can be frustrating at times. Receiving lecture via real-time video from the parent site can be stressful. I much prefer the classes that have instructors in the classroom -- it allows for a more interactive learning experience. Overall, I am just so grateful to have the opportunity to attend nursing school and become a registered nurse!
I'm wondering about Bates LPN program: I am finishing my pre-req's for nursing at Pierce College, and am planning on applying to 4 schools: Seattle U, PLU, Pierce College & Tacoma CC. I had looked into Bates a few weeks back, just because it would be nice to get my LPN, make some money and then go back to school, but the message I got was that it was a 1 - 1/2 year waiting list to get in. Is this true?
Thanks for the info!
Well, the wait for most schools I believe is at least that long IF they have a wait list.....many don't even do that anymore...be sure that whatever schools you apply to are acreddited...some are not. If they are not you will not be able to "bridge" later. I would apply to more than 4 if I were you and wanted in bad enough. Be prepared to move away to attend..I had to move 3.5 hours away (I am now an RN but never stopped at LPN) Many bridge schools require you to work at least 18months before you apply to their RN program...as well. You will find that these programs get more and more full as time goes on I believe. Don't sell yourself short - you can also apply for a regular RN program..most of them once you complete the first of two years in the nursing portion (this is 2 year colleges)..you can test for the LPN anyway..and then work...and then just continue on with your RN from right there..no waiting. But these are hard to get into as well, the RN programs.
Basically anymore it is quite hard to get in...you have to have very high gpas..lots of extras (like work in the medical field as a cna or whatever)..etc... some require other things...when I went in ...it was just that you had your prereqs done with at least a c..then got on a wait list to get in (that was six months but that was 2 plus years ago and now they've done away with the wait list completely and now it is high gpa etc just like the rest of the state of WA)...
So .... it's tough yes. If you are not a cna already I recommend you see if you can shadow some floor nurses for a day...or even a couple hours. Really see what it's about.
Some folks after entering nursing school wonder why they just didn't go to med school....or, to PA school...or some other area of medical. It is worth doing alot of research before making that wait/effort.
Good luck!
