Was It Worth It?

Published

I want real, honest opinions.

Was nursing worth it for you? Would you recommend anyone do it, or tell them to run far, far away?

If you could go back, what would you have done with your life?

My BA was in psyc as well! Ugh financial stability. No money fears if there's a divorce. TOTALLY looking forward to that in comparison to my current completely broke and unemployed-ness.

Acute, you are an ASN as well? Me too.

My BA is n Psych, and I am slooooooowly going for my BSN.

OP: YES, it was worth it. I've always worked, sometimes 2 jobs. I also have no fear of being poor or living from paycheck to paycheck if my marriage were to go *kaput*.

I like medicine. I like learning. I like teaching. I like people.

And the Psych doesn't hurt in nursing.

(FUN to study in school, sort of useless unless you go all the way, or really think to figure out your niche.)

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

I've learned you have to be crazy to major in psych, but a good crazy. ;)

Yes. I did 1 semester of the BSN a couple years ago but didn't see the point in continuing. NOT going for MSN and, as of now, no real financial benefit. Maybe when kids are on their own, but probably not.

*raises my eyebrow at you*

OP: IF I could do it over, and money wasn't an object, I would do something more psychy or social worky. But I'm working it out in nursing.

1 semester so far for me as well. Older son in college. A conundrum.

No I would not change bring a nurse. I've thought about changing careers but truthfully I will never leave nursing. I'm constantly learning. They one thing would change though is that I would not have changed jobs and I left a really good job which if I could have gone back and changed that I would.

I would have done it sooner. I have an associates, but at my age, I'm not sure I want to invest the time and money to go further.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. I thought nursing school was a blast, I had a hard time understanding other student's agony but maybe that's the nerd in me. Nothing seemed to click for me as well as nursing, PICU nursing to be exact.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. I didn't become a nurse until my mid 40s. I guess it took me that long to find out what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Specializes in MCH,NICU,NNsy,Educ,Village Nursing.

I would indeed do it over again and not change a thing. I had to leave the bedside 10 years ago due to a blown back, and I miss that. So, I decided to see the world, literally, and get my NP so that I could do more for patients in those parts of the world I've been privileged to go to. That's one of the nice things about nursing: if able to, it's nice to be able to go into the uttermost parts of the world and do some good.
