I've come across several postings fairly recently from new grads wanting to move to the Phoenix area and I want to make them aware that the job market here is very competitive. Unless you are an experienced nurse, have great luck, or a strong hospital contact, new grad hospital positions are very hard to come by. I know several that have had to leave the area to find jobs.
I'm not trying to be a downer, but in this economy Phoenix is NOT the place a new grad wants to be.
I know hospital jobs are hard to get as a new grad, but I have a question. It is not possible for me to move, my husband has a job that he will be at til he retires (another 10 years minimum, 27 years maximum). So if when I graduate I cannot find a hospital job (if I decide that's even what I want) and I get a job in rehab or LTC or something along those lines, will hospitals then consider me after I've had that job for 6mo-a year? Or do hospitals prefer hospital experience only?I guess my question is really do hospitals look at any experience as experience or do they want specific hospital experience?
I went from LTC to hospital. Things like a BSN and certifications help tremendously.
I work at banner as a PCA and I have seen several cnas and pcas transition into a nursing position at banner quite easily. I do believe having a good employment history with the hospital helps, but there are also some new grads at my facility who have no prior experience outside of nursing school. So who knows really?

I was offered a job at Banner Boswell! Do you have any info on that banner hospital?
Boy do I feel old! I graduated from MCC with the two year and I remember recruiters from hospitals meeting with us, offering us jobs in pretty much any department, with sign on bonuses.
I wanted out of Phoenix so I applied and got a job at the hospital in Flagstaff, but due to a few family circumstances, ended up declining the offer, moved to Colorado and very quickly got a job in hospice care.
Sorry to see so many nurses struggle.. hang in there !
