Warning about Classbook.com

I ordered 2 of the nursing books I needed from Classbook.com.

Excellent prices for used texts and I saved a few bucks. Well, when I receive them in the mail today in a very timely fashion, one of them is missing the CD and the other has this white electric tape all over the cover. Odd, I think, but at least the inside is in great condition. Well, I start to peel back the tape wondering if the stuff will come off without ripping the cover and it's covering up the words "Instructor's Copy." :angryfire

What the heck!? I just wanted a regular old textbook. I didn't want a stinking Instructor's Copy. The publishers give those out free! What a jip!

And I thought "Used" meant the item is intact. Why is the other book missing a CD? Shouldn't it just come with the used CD? It's not like I use the CD anyhow but it's the principle! Argh. And of course the sell-back value is less now missing the CD if ever I decide to get rid of it after using it.

Anyhow, let this be a warning to all of you folks that Classbook.com is VERY shady and sneaky. I would never give them my business again after this. I wrote to customer service and I doubt they'll do a darn thing except tell me to return them using my own money for postage which I cannot afford to do. I'm just happy these textbooks are ok in the inside and that I can use them. Now I'm left wondering if the Instructor's Copy is even legal to own as a student since the publishers hand them out free...and if the page numbers are the same as the student edition. (They should be, right?)

Aiiii yaiiii yaiiii. What a headache. Grrrr.

Moral of the story: Stick to Ebay, Half.com, and Amazon.com for cheaper used textbooks. I've used those over and over again and never ever had a problem. Classbook.com sucks!

watch out with every site----amazon has used sellers and each is responsible for their own transaction. Look out for fine print regarding edition, condition, etc. I recieved a Dev. Pych text that was in fairly good condition but had lot more hi-lighting than advertised. And the A&P text I need has been listed real cheap ($69 rather than $135) BUT they are selling the 5th edition under the 6th edition ISBN!! Anyone looking for Marieb Human Anatomy & Physiology---I saw on Amazon marketplace a seller, obviously the same guy, using two different seller names and they had a bunch of NEW texts listed---just felt fishy. Watch out.

Be sure to check shipping too- as on ebay, sometimes sellers make up for the cheap price by charging outrageous shipping. I always check my school bookstore and other college text book stores for used books and compare prices online. At least with the bookstore you have some recourse if there is a problem.

Try http://www.bookfinder.com/ for cheap books. You can search by ISBN (this is the best way to make sure you have the right book), author, or title.

It searches online stores, as well as brick & mortar bookstores from all over the country, and lists the prices and detailed conditions.

I once found a book that was going for $30+ on ebay and online stores for just $1 at a little bookstore in N.J.

Good luck!

I am glad you posted this i am in the process of ordering my nursing psych book for next semester online. I was going to order new though, just because I'm scared to get used online. Even if I order new from e-campus it's still cheaper than my college bookstore. Any feedback about e-campus? I was going to place an order tomorrow.

I used e-campus last semester, and plan to use them again this semester. They were great, and I even got free shipping. See if they're offering it this semester.

Thanks for the great message. I believe in the power of the consumer, you just made me NOT ever wanna use 'em!

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the heads up. I learned long ago to avoid ordering used on-line as well, if I can't see it I want new... But speaking of e-campus, I used them this summer for some of my nursing books and had a small problem with them as well. Luckily it got resolved without having to go through the hassle described above, but it was enough of a scare that I went elsewhere for the rest of my purchases. The hassle described above about having to contact your credit card company and the BBB is the nightmare I dread, who has time for that crap?! I like Amazon. If I have to sometimes pay a little more (and that's only sometimes) then it's worth the piece of mind I figure. Again, thanks for the heads up, we have to help each other out here.

Another update: This CLASSBOOK.COM SITE IS NUTS!

I emailed customer service stating that I was unhappy that I paid for a legitimate textbook and received an "Instructor's Copy" that says specifically all over it - "Not for resale." They said that if the ISBN was wrong that it was an error and they would give me a refund, less the shipping. Well, the ISBN is the same as I ordered because they stuck a goofy ISBN sticker right over the book's UPC displaying the student textbook ISBN #. For all I know, the instructor's copy has the same ISBN anyhow. If that isn't fishy I don't know what is! What a crooked place, selling textbooks that aren't legitimate. I doubt I'd ever resell this book anyhow as I'd like to keep this book for a reference, but if I wanted to, I couldn't! Oh well, at least I learned my lesson and hopefully no one who hangs around here will use this horribly immoral website. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth altogether. I wonder if I could report to the publisher that this site is selling their "Instructor Copy - Not for Resale" texts. It makes me mad that all of the doctors and R.N.'s who helped write this book aren't getting properly paid for it.
