WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice

Published

hey guys,

I start this fall in my nursing program and Im extremely anxious!!! Im looking for any advice that will help me in school. Whats the thing you can NOT live w/o during nursing school? What was the best study method for you? Index cards, recorders, palm pilots? What should I take to clinicals? I know you all were anxious when u started!!!

thanks guys

p.s. ....im hoping this will end up being a HUGE thread that other anxious students can read

i have my orientation on june 29th!!! and i am starting on sept. 7th!!!! i am sooo excited to start!!!

I really love this post!! thanks everyone who posted all of their wonderful knowledge! it is so helpful!

I have been accepted into nursing school starting August, 2010. I am worried that I won't do well and at the same time excited because I have worked very hard to get to this point. This is an opportunity to become a part of something that I've always wanted and now here is my chance. I know all of us students don't want to blow it.

Thank you for these thoughtful words of advise. It set my mind into the proper perspective of the whole experience. This will help me get through some of the difficult times during the nursing school journey.

Please do continue to give us more insight in the future.

Congrats on getting into NS:) That is so awesome.

I am starting in the fall my last year of NS, of a two yr program. The only advice I can really give to you, is take 1 whole day to yourself each week. If you don't you will go insane. Make sure you take breaks while you study and lots of H2O!

Good luck to you!!! Your going to be great and if you feel at any point that you have had enough, just think at it this way, you are one day closer to having your dream come true then you were the day before, or even the week before. DON'T GIVE UP!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!:yeah:

I read all 43 pages of the thread today. Yay for an afternoon to read! Some amazing advice and tips in here that I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Thank you all for sharing!

I start nursing school in Sept, my orientation is in Aug. I heard we don't get a list of what we need till then I'm going to try to get it before.

I'm so excited, yet nervous. I can't help but wonder what if I can't do this? At the same time, I know I can. I have a BS but chose a regular 2 year ADN program due to cost.

For clinicals, I suggest taking a clipboard that has a cheatsheet on it, so you have a quick refernce for lab values common dosage calculations and other tidbits of info that will help you during the clinical day.

~wow~

This thread is very informative!

i actually read everything from the start, and i have written advice and tips in my notebook :)

i will have my orientation tomorrow! i dunno what to expect yet, but i hope i'll find a friend that i could stick to throughout the program. i don't wanna suffer alone. lol

anyways, hope everyone who is in nursing would keep on posting new tips and advice! :)

btw, what i'm worried the most is the Clinicals, i dunno how well i will do.

i'm afraid of making mistakes.

If it hasn't been said already: Grab an NCLEX book and follow along with what you're covering in class (eg. peds, maternity, cardiac, pharm).

EDIT: just came home from orientation... :D

omg, sooo tiring...we were there from 9 to 5. geez.

so many information, but the clas was really small, maybe 30+ students?

anyways the instructors and dean was really nice, it felt really private and like a family. :D

hope i'll get close to atleast one of my classmates though. LOL

I start nursing school in the fall (accelerated program). I am SO excited, and also very nervous, but alot of these posts made me feel a little better so thanks everyone for your input!!! :)

wow. Im soooo happy this thread has helped so many people. A year ago I started this thread right before I started nursing school. This thread meant the world to me. Nursing school has been hard. Even though everyone will state that it is difficult and will take over your life i was STILL surprised at how true that statement was. But i made it...and so will you all.

:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:CONGRATS to everyone just accepted into nursing school. Buckle up for the ride of your life. There will be ups and downs, triumphs and disappointments. But its all so worth it :-)

MRSKELLRD:

Thank you SO much for starting this amazing thread! I just saw it a few hours ago and haven't stopped reading it... so far I'm on page 22..and IM HOOKED. Its really encouraging to hear from you and so many other students going through this crazy journey. I start nursing school next month and can't help but laugh out loud when I read everyones posts about buying school supplies and stalking websites for good shoes. (I've been doing the EXACT same thing) Your story really touched me about why you wanted to become a nurse. Passion seems to really be the driving force in a wonderful nurse. I wish you the best of luck and will continue to check this post! God bless.
