WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
Congrats on getting into NS:) That is so awesome. I am starting in the fall my last year of NS, of a two yr program. The only advice I can really give to you, is take 1 whole day to yourself each week. If you don't you will go insane. Make sure you take breaks while you study and lots of H2O! Good luck to you!!! Your going to be great and if you feel at any point that you have had enough, just think at it this way, you are one day closer to having your dream come true then you were the day before, or even the week before. DON'T GIVE UP!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!

Hoping09, First I understand exactly how you feel. I was in your spot last year. I was so nervous, excited, anxious. I had no idea what to expect. I will let you know how it was for me. I won't lie or sugarcoat it. It is going to be one of the hardest things you probably ever will do in your life. It is SO much work. When I say so much work, what ever your thinking take that and double it. It is Alot of reading. Lots of reading. My advice is start in the summer when they give us the list of readings in the August meeting (I believe it's Aug). Read it all. Try to read it twice. Then when it's time to do it in class really stay ahead of the game. Don't ever fall behind. Once you do it's almost impossible to catch up. I do have three children ages 10,7 and 3 (at that time) and I felt like the worst parent in the world. I will be honest with you. I did'nt have time to do homework with them (husband had to do it), I could'nt go to any of there soccer games, or football games. My youngest cried everymorning that I had to leave her at daycare. It was horrible. I felt like you had said, like i was neglecting my kids. I had to keep reminding myself that it was for a greater purpose, so that in the end I could help them have a better future. I had to miss a little over the next two years to give them a better life. It is hard. I am not looking forward to doing this semester over. I will be honest. Our schedules are just handed to us. We don't get to pick. (at least last yr we did'nt). I heard they might be doing it a little different this year with us picking numbers. Not sure. Basically, Friday is just us sitting and listening and going over our paper work and schedules and what to expect. I think we may get our reading schedules on friday. I can't really remember. I hope this helps you- If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. I will be more than glad to answer anything that I can. I understand how you feel. Congrats!! See ya on Fri:) P.S. Remember, you can do this! Even when you it gets bad and you have 4 test in one week, and your freaking out. You can do this. Just take it one day at a time. Just breathe. It may seem overwhelming, your not alone. That's the most important thing to remb. Everyone else feels the same way. Your not the only one freaking out. lol If you need anything I will help you out as best as I can. Don't hesitate to ask. :)

I would NOT take HE 224 or ANYTHING else while in the first semester UNLEss all you have to take is your ADN courses. If you already have your pharm class out of the way then maybe try to do it...even then I would'nt even chance it. I am a repeat first sem and it was killer. It was the hardest thing that I have EVER in my life had to do. I will see all on Fri!!! Looking forward to meeting everyone:)

Your welcome. My first schedule was Mondays I had skills lab from 9-12 then starting mid way thru the first semester I had nursing process which was from 1-2:50 on mondays (ibelieve), Tues were my study days (off), Wed I had pharm, principles, and assessment/lab. The assessment class and the lab class for it alternates everyother week. I think I had about an hour or so in between each class. Pharm was about 2 hours, and principles was three loooonnnnng boring hours (lol) and assessment was about an hour and half or so. Then Thurs/Fri I had clinical. My hours for the first half was 7am-12 i believe, then our second half was suppose to be from 1-9pm, but my instructor had a scheduling conflict so we had clinical from 10-6pm which worked out nicely. Lots of books are needed for your first sem. They have some pretty good recs for what types of book bags to get. A bunch of us went to JoAnn Fabrics and got the scrap booking bags on wheels. It worked out nicely. They fit all the books in there. Weds were my long day like I mentioned, so I would bring my bag with wheels on those days, you use your nursing fundamentals book for skills and principles, then your assessment book for both lab and assessment class, and clinicals to help you along with your assessment profiles on your clients. I hope this helps ya, if you have anymore questions i will be glad to help ya out...if i can.:)

HOPING09 HELLO- Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I have not been on this site lately. As far as having to aply again, yes i had to do it all over again. I did get in luckily so I will be starting all over again in the fall. At least this time all i have to take is principles and skills, and redo the clinicals. (only because they are connected). I only failed skills, but they are connected so i have to take them both again. My clinicals were at an extended care facility for the first 8 weeks, and then at PHH for the last eight weeks. I loved being at the hopsital. The extended care facility I did not really care for. (just me thou). The first semester was killer. I have NEVER in my life gone thru anything so stressful. I had Pharm, and then all the other classes too. It was so fast passed, and so much to learn. I remember at one point we had 4 or 5 test in one week. It was crazy. I heard from my friends that are in the second semester now that it is much more laid back, and calm. I am not looking forward to all the stress again however, it is something that I really want, so I will endure it. lol. I did not tell you all of that to scare you, i just wish that when I was going into it I had someone to really lay it all out on the line for me, and tell me exactly what to expect. I was clueless. I live in Macomb twp. Where abouts are you? If you have anymore questions I would be more than happy to answer any that I can. I know how nerve wracking it is guessing, and not really knowing what to expect. One word of advice get ahead in the summer, and stay ahead, and review, review, review. Don't be to nervous or get to frustrated. You will beable to do it!! It is just planning, and organizing. I wish I would have studied harder for skills. It was the class that I had a 90 percent in so I did'nt focus to much on it going into the final. I was at a 79 in pharm going into the final and was freaking out about failing that. So, I focused alot of time on that. Oh- well. I will get it right this time around. lol Good Luck to you- OH- and CONGRATS!! Angel

Hello hoping09. I am a student at SC4 as well. I was in the program that started fall 08. I missed staying in it by 4 stinking points in my skills class. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, so I am sure that everything will work out the way it is suppose to for me. I re-applied for fall 09. I will wait and see if I get in again. When do you have patho? I am taking that right now as well. I have it tomorrow morn actually with Ms. Till. I should be studying fluid/lytes right now, but i will wait for the kiddies to go to bed b4 i do that. How did you do on your first test? (Assuming you had yours already). Hope to hear back from ya- Good luck to you-

is anyone here in SC4's program or been in it?
Hi... me again! lol. I do have another question. I need some advice. I am scheduled to take developmental psy in the summer. The class meets mon, tue,and wed. I was wondering if you thought if it would be in my best interest to drop that class and just concentrate on my readings and preparing for the first semester. Then I could take that class the following summer. I am sure I will have a lot of stuff to read that summer to prepare for the fall, but at least i will have an idea of what to expect. Should I hold off on develop psy? I just don't want to be overwhelmed with the homework from that class then the reading and preparing for the program. Why stress myself if i don't need to be. Right? Plenty of stress seems to be coming my way starting in the fall. Why rush it. lol what do you think? If it was you what would you do? Thanks again-

I now feel like I am walking into this with some what of an idea of what to expect. Thank you, you have been a huge help. I really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for being so candid with me. I have heard it is a really rough program. I am so ready for it. I do already have A&P 2 done so I won't have to worry about that. I do have a couple questions if you don't mind.... my first question is how many days a week will i expect to go if i have all my liberal art classes done? How long are the lectures? How do clinicals work? I am sure I will get all the answers in my orientation, but i am so curious now. Also, what should i do to prepare over the summer leading into the fall? Someone told me that I will be in lecture from 12-9pm that seems like a really loooonnnng lecture. I am having a hard time swallowing that rumor. I am hoping that is our clinicals. OH! as far as the first semester what type of clinicals do we do? I'm sorry.... i am just so excited to finally have another student that is going through it right now. Thank you so much for all of your help. good luck to you!!!
