hey guys,
I start this fall in my nursing program and Im extremely anxious!!! Im looking for any advice that will help me in school. Whats the thing you can NOT live w/o during nursing school? What was the best study method for you? Index cards, recorders, palm pilots? What should I take to clinicals? I know you all were anxious when u started!!!
thanks guys
p.s. ....im hoping this will end up being a HUGE thread that other anxious students can read
I wouldn't advise on debinding your books. I can't tell you how many times I've needed to look in the index for something or pulled information from a section we weren't necessarily working on at the time. Plus I think I'd pull my hair out if I were studying and had to find all the parts of my books!
For the people who are image conscience...you probably wouldn't survive my classes. I have wanted to kick myself for leaving books at home that I didn't think I'd need. Go to Walmart, pick up a bag with rollerblade wheels (not the canister looking ones because they will squeak after a while and that is EMBARRASSING when you roll down the hospital hall with a squeaky book bag). Likely you'll have to wear some ugly uniform most of your time in school anyway...at least I did. Think how sexy it looks to wear that RN or LPN badge and forget about how you look right now. :wink2:

yeah, ive reviewed the many pros and cons of debinding and i think in my particular case the pros win by far. I think debinding is a very personal choice because it obviously will not work for everyone. And its nothing wrong with being conscious of image. I work in one of the best childrens hospitals in the country and they are all about image! Image is what our patients and family see first. Personally, if i do not have a choice about the way something looks thats fine, ill still live. BUT, if their are better looking choices then heck yea im going for em!! Oh,and its some really really cute rolling backpacks out there. I just realized that i dont really need one.
just my honest opinion and thanks for ur perspective also
I didn't go through all the pages so forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but get the iPod touch! There are so many amazing applications (and free ones to boot! Check out Diagnosaurus) and the touch (iPhone or pod) is very, VERY helpful. And it's not nearly as much as an iPhone Plus you don't have to switch cell phone providers haha It does everything the phone does, pretty much. Except make calls!
It also can pick up on WiFi, so if you are in class you should be able to go on the internet if you need to. I don't know if hospitals have WiFi but I bet the 'net would be helpful there too.
I felt like a nerd too as I wrestled with rather or not to buy a fancy 3 hole puncher and other random office supplies. I picked up a protracter and worried if I would need it. My husband acted that same way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol.....he said i would never use a protracter in nursing school...which i probbaly wont. But it was only like 50 cent and it matched my pencil bag..lol![]()

GET THE 3 HOLE PUNCH!! I had a single hole punch and with all the handouts and the powerpoints we get my hand got sore so I got a 3 hole punch and I don't regret it I only paid $6.00 for it at Wal-mart but I think I would have paid $20.00!!! And if you do need that protractor in NS please let me know!!
Hahaha that seriously made me laugh so hard for some reason! You just made my day.

Yeah I'd have to disagree. I'm sure if I didn't make it through a program it would be because I didn't completely apply myself or because the material was too challenging and not because I like to look nice. I'm not even sure how the two are related. And my uniforms are ok with me. I'll admitt a hunter green top wouldn't be my first choice :wink2: but they are decent uniforms.
I still think debinding is the best choice for me. I'll put each section in diffrent binders and label them so I can easily locate what I'm looking for and I'll make sure I have a index/glossary/table of contents in each section. I don't plan to sell my nursing books. I can understand how some people would be agaisnt doing that to their books though.

I have a question?? When you "debind" and put the sections in different binders do you take them to class with you? I know, with our instructors, we have had assignments but have arrived in class and been referred to other chapters during discussions....
Just curious....I'm trying to understand this concept and the positive options :wink2:
Thanks ya'll .......
*bumps, cuz I like checking up on this thread*
I decided I'm going to get an iPod Touch instead of a PDA. I need an mp3 upgrade anyway, and it will be cheaper than upgrading my cell and getting a contract with it. Plus, the features on the Touch are way cool
I got my schedule yesterday - just waiting for the miracle call for a job interview now!
