Wake Tech Spring 2017 Start

Published

Anyone submitting an application to the nursing program at WTCC this upcoming July for spring 2017? Wanted to connect with others who may be in my shoes. I'm still working on some prerequisites (TEAS and CNA) but hope to finish them up by May. I will be transferring most of my prerequisites in from another school.

CN_2bRN919, No, I didn't include anything in January. I was just OCD on my application this time.:facepalm: I just finished my physical exam and immunization records today. The only thing that was skipped are the breast and pelvic exam. My doctor said that I should schedule it with my OB Gyne. I'm not sure sure if we really need to do this. It's on the form but I'll wait for the orientation before I schedule for one.

WSMom, CNA, I think we just need a basic physical. I think the clinical requirements for the ADN are similar to the ones for the NAI program. I'm thinking all the GYN stuff is probably optional. Wish I could go ahead and get my physicial, but my insurance won't cover it until early Nov since I got one in late Oct last year (once every year).

Happy September ladies!! This is our month!! Never been so excited to wake up on a Thursday!! lol :) I have a friend who applied to the radiography program and they've started sending out letters, she got hers yesterday. Maybe NUR will send their letters out sooner than the end of the month. I applied to the RAD program as well as a back up but NUR is my priority. Haven't gotten a letter from RAD though.

Hey ladies! 22 days!!! :woot::yeah::yes:

Good of luck to you Cn_2bRN919 with RAD school! I didn't know you applied to that program. Best wishes :up:

Oh wow, applying to RAD is actually a great idea! We just have to take MAT 142 and were good to apply right? Did your friend get in? I have a feeling you will also get in at RAD. At least all you thats left for you to do for the clinical req's is the Physical exam, then you're good to go. I have yet to get a flu shot. You know what? I saw some of my classmates from BIO 168 and 169 and a lot haven't applied this spring and plan to apply for fall instead. I'm surprised because we all have BIO 175 left for prereqs. Anyways, I think, since people take vacations during the summer, most students tend to wait and apply for the fall. No wonder spring applicants count is lower than the fall.

Unfortunately my friend did not get in this semester. I'm thinking they send out letters alphabetically by last name. Her last name is before mine in the alphabet. At least I've heard that's what they do for nursing, so I assume RAD is the same. She thinks they send out rejection letters first. Checked the mail today and still nothing. No news is good news I guess. For RAD you have the option to take MAT 142 or MAT 153 (?) --- I can't exactly remember. I know the lower one is a three credit math class and the higher one is a four credit math class. Depending on how many credits the class is, you get more points. The difference between the two classes is only about 2 ranking points though. I did the three credit course since I had met that requirement with my statistics course.

I see. I will probably get a letter first then. My last name starts with a V. Unless your last name starts with WXYZ. Sorry to hear that about your friend. Maybe she will get in for the fall?. As with me, if I don't get in this spring, that means its not meant to be. Of course I will try again for this fall. I guess I need to take the math if I wanted to apply in RAD. My heart is in nursing though. My gosh, we might hear from them in 2 weeks! :eek:

If you were to apply to the RAD program, the application is very similar to nursing. You don't have to have all the prerequisites completed, but the more you do, the higher you'll rank. If you didn't complete a math class in the past 5 years, you could apply and meet math proficiency with your placement test score, but you wouldn't get any ranking points for a math class. Whereas NUR doesn't rank math courses, you just have to meet math proficiency. After this semester, my math course will be too old for ranking for RAD so I figured it wouldn't hurt to apply to that program as well and just see if I get admitted.

Wait, so you're saying that the math placement test is equivalent tot he MATH 142 or 153? My only math is the placement test. I looked for a radiography job opening in Raleigh-durham area and I found 1. Oh boy.

I'm sorry WSMom, CNA if what I said was kind of confusing, but it's actually the opposite. So if you've taken a three or four credit hour math class in the last 5 years, you can meet math proficiency with that course as well as receive ranking points for it. If your math class is older than 5 years then you would either need to take another math course, or take the placement test. If you take the placement test you will meet math proficiency, but you will not receive ranking points because you do not get credit hours for passing the placement test. There are not as many classes to receive ranking points for RAD. NUR has 8 or 9 I believe, RAD only has 6 or so. The max points an applicant can get including the TEAS is 121. To be competitive they say students need at least 112-113ish. It changes semester to semester. The TEAS is also weighted differently. For RAD as long as you get higher than a 63 on the TEAS you get 25 points. Also, the program only accepts between 20-30 students per semester and only have a wait list of 10 students. So it can be more competitive than NUR. Typically though they only have a little less than 100 applicants.

Ok. Thank you for a great explanation. It's always good to have a back up. Unrelated question, but you may know about this. So, I just received my financial aid for year 2016/2017. Do you have an idea on how much will our tuition, books, scrubs, etc. will cost for 2017 spring and fall? I am planning to reject one of the loans but I am not sure if I should accept the lower one or the highest one. I already have a big student loan. I only have one class this sem (BIO 175) and already paid for from my left over from 2015/2016 loans.

Ok, I think I got the cost. We have 23 credits for Spring, Summer, Fall 2017 which costs $2,230, including campus, computer, lab fee. I read from the "waketech ADN fall 2015" that their book bundle cost $1100. They discussed other books and I'm not sure if those are part of the bundle. Let's say books cost $1500. Scrubs and shoes maybe $300. I already have a stethoscope and BP cuff. So, for 2017, credits, school fees and books alone is roughly $4,000. Unless the bundled book is just for 1 semester, then it will be more. I think, I'll just get the lower one, and then just apply for another loan in 2018 (hope I get approved).

WSMom, CNA, when I went to the information session in person, Ms. BW gave a printout (it was included in our packet) of estimated tuition costs for pretty much everything in the program down to the dollar. How much you spend depends on how many classes you have left. You should email her and ask if she can email you a copy of that printout. It will be so much easier than me explaining it, and you'll have a copy for yourself for the future. I only plan to use FA strictly for tuition, textbooks, and reoccurring fees. I have completed all prerequisites so I would only be taking NUR classes each semester. The sheet from Ms. BW literally gives expenses down to the dollar, so I was able to calculate how much aid I would need per semester.
