Waiting List Initiative

Published

I thought i might let you know that at our place 2 senior sisters doing WLI list most weekends. This has been happening for past 6 yrs or so.

Other nurses talk about it as being unfair but are frightened to say anything.

I don't usually do this list (never done one b4) but then i decided that i might do one. My lead nurse told me the next date avaibale, so i put my name on the list yesterday and meant to tell our her today but she found out before i had chance to tell her.

She really got annoyed the fact that i put name, she went on to say that she has already had planned the staff for that day 6 weeks ago, but i told her that the date was only confirmed one week ago and that lead nurse has told me to put my name on it. And guess which staff she had in her mind? her friend (other senior sister). She has put her friends name on the list to do saturday and sunday. I have informed my lead nurse who said that will have word with this sister. What do you think?

Sorry what is this list concerned with? WLI means what

waiting list initiative (wli): here in uk all surgery has to be done within 3 months. if however the surgery has not taken place within that time then this is done at the weekends where staffs will do this list own their own time and will get extra money, i think it is double pay.

if this is the case then the option should be available for all staff and if necessary done on a rota so all get a chance to do it

Yes the option should be available for all staff. I have suggested her to put the list out so that people can put their names on. This is fair and everyone will get chance. But she dose not like anyone questioning her.

As I found out this week she gave me all lies when i put my name on it. I have taken this up with my lead nurse. So will wait and see what will happen next.

The same thing is happening in my work as well!! The same people's names go on the list week after week. The funny thing about it is that one of the senior nurses that always puts her name down will not do on call nor lates nor week ends for the department!! Curiously this is accepted and glossed over by the sister. Unfairness that absolutely stinks!

i am sure this happening everywhere in the uk hospitals, where some seniors would do no w/e's, lates or on calls but will grab every opportunities when they can to double their money. no wonder nhs is in red. it is time managers should get tough. i must also add that how easy it is for senior sister to take time off to attend dr's, dentist appointments or indeed their children’s school activities during work time but other juniors cannot without a battle. (don’t get me wrong, i don't mean to tar all seniors sister with same brush).

i cannot comment really on your waiting list initiative, although i know the ones that went on in my trust insisted on only the most experienced staff as they were running out of hours and therefore only the senior staff could do them, however i do think you need to be very careful here when commenting on time off and senior staff. all of my staff get treated the same be they a or g grade. if given enough notice then my senior staff will try to accomodate any responable requests. additionally if your senior sisters are doing the rotas i think you will find that they cover a fair amount of horrible shifts to fit in the requests that junior staff put in. i don't know if you have ever tried off duty planning and fitting in annual leave, study leave, sickness and requests but it is one of the most difficult jobs that i have ever done.

additionally critisism can go both ways as well, i have had more phone calls this week of staff phoning sick for one reason of another, if i were cynical i could say that many of these are regularly taking sick time epecially when the sun comes out. it is not unheard of that if junior staff dont get the requests they demand then they just go sick. this is also unfair as the vast majority of staff do not take the p*** but there is a minority that do.

being in a senior nursing position within the nhs has to be one of the most difficult jobs i know, you have to keep managers like me happy with budget managment whilst keeping safe levels of staff within the clinical area coping with sickness, study, holidays and more and more complaints and difficult patients. it is not as easy as it looks and at the end of the day they have 24hour responsibilty when you can go home and forget about it.

my ward managers have very strict guidlines if they want to work extra as it is their budget that becomes overspent if they use inapprpriate staff and overspend, it has happend more than once that a ward manager has been taken through capability for not managing budgets. i think before you critisie your management you should really try to do thier job. thats not to say you do not get poor managers, but you also get some very good ones. i am very fortunate, all of my ward managers are excellent, but they do get a very raw deal from their staff who are not always fair and critisise very quickly without trying to understand.

ok i am going to get off my soapbox now. :uhoh3:

in my trust the senior nurses were often not rotered to work weekends as they often did not get paid their grade, a fact which is not fair as they tend to be the most experienced nurses whom are a good resource. i know my friend worked in a hospital where only the senior nurse knew all the op proceedures as many of the staff were junior, so therefore worked a lot of out of hours stuff at an f grade pay!!

thankyou for your comments:

our hospital runs mostly by experienced staff nurses over the weekend. no senior sisters work late duty or weekends and therefore they do not do horrible shifts to fit in the requests. yes senior sister have 24 hr responsibilities and at times do have to fill the gap (though not that often at our place).

when junior staff request time off to attend appointments they have to take days off or book a/l’s, not really accommodative is it.

yes criticism can go both ways and majority of junior staff do not take unnecessary time off. but it is senior sisters (at our place) are phoning sick specially after doing wli or when sun comes out. one has just come back after being off sick for 3 months with stress.

in addition i don’t think i needed to be reminded about ward managers having very strict guidelines etc, as i have been in senior position in the past.

as i mentioned i raised this issue with lead nurse, and was shocked to discover the unfairness that was going on. (ok this should have been discovered ages ago). the lead nurse acted on very quickly, the weekly rota has been drawn up, and all staff will get equal opportunity to do wli, no same staff will be allow to do list more then once a month. if no staffs can do then senior sister will have to fill the gap. because the truth have come out senior sisters are not happy.

Obviously this is a very hot topic and has caused some of our posters to become a little overheated. I really dont feel anybody is trying to be insulting in their postings but can we cool it down a little and respect each others opinion.
