waiting, Air Force Nurse Corps

Published

Hello all, I am new to this forum, but have been reading from it for some time. I am curious. Who is still waiting for the fully qualified selection status from Jan boards? It seems that AFPC is busy with other matters for the immediate future. I am waiting patiently....well not so patiently!

I just looked at AFI 36-2903 and checked out the pic of the enlisted and officer service dress. I was unfortunately correct - the enlisted coat does not have epaulets and ours does. There's no way to add them, so unfortunately you'll have to buy a new coat.

Yikes, I just took a gander at the mess dress and the name suits it!!

The mess dress is actually very nice. It's a military tuxedo.

Carolinapooh----Question, when are you given the travel voucher that you have to turn into finance? Also, when they reimburse you for your travel voucher, does that include money for driving to COT, travel for driving to Lackland, reimbursement for staying on base until housing is found?

You aren't given a travel voucher - you file your travel voucher (which is a fancy and held-over way of saying you file to get your money back) once you get to your permanent duty station.

You file and get everything back from the day you left your home and arrived at COT, money you have to spend on meals at COT, travel pay to COT and then to your home station or NTP base (and then from your NTP base to your permanent duty station), any family separation allowance you're permitted, your ten days TLF at your base (I'm guessing you're coming here, to LAFB in San Antonio) - essentially, you file to get everything back. And this isn't done until you get here to Lackland (or whatever your permanent base is). You're also entitled to a $400 one time clothing allowance as an officer and you also get about $1300 in money for "unreimbursed PCS expenses". They'll tell you all about that in the finance briefing at COT.

So just basically, keep all receipts?

mid

I would, even though it doesn't matter anymore.

They actually don't look at receipts anymore - they got smart. They're only going to pay you whatever the going per diem rate is, whatever the mileage is, and whatever you're owed anyway, so the whole receipt thing became a bit outdated. I kept them because I didn't know any better, and I still say it's a good idea to, but they're not even going to want them. So if you forget, or you misplace one or two, it's not a national disaster.

I went into finance here, and I had all my trash - even had a designated envelope above the visor to hold on to all of them. Stopped for gas? Stick the receipt above the visor. Breakfast at IHOP? Receipt above the visor. I was so proud of myself!

And then they didn't even look at it. What they want is unusual expenses - like if you're stuck in Atlanta and the only hotel you can get is the Sheraton Grand Atlanta at $300 a night because there's a football game and a medical convention in town.

I was a little disappointed. :)

But save them anyway. You never know. I put the envelope above the visor and it worked great.

Wac44-I'm going to COT in August then Nellis too. I can't say I'm looking forward to the drive out there but I look forward to knowing someone too. We have a facebook page, if you haven't joined yet.

I've enjoyed following everyone's stories. I just started the process and am going to MEPS next Thursday. I've read a little bit about what to expect. Can anyone recommend what I should wear?

I am currently in nursing school (a former teacher) and will graduate this time next year. My recruiter says that he will submit my package to the August Board and hopefully I will go to COT next summer. What are the odds of getting my first choice (Travis AVB)?

Wear comfortable clothes and comfy shoes; you'll be there pretty much all day. I wore a pullover top and pull-on, cotton pants. Take a good-writing pen. Do not take anything valuable and leave your cell phone and purse (except ID) locked in the car; I put $5.00 in ones in my pocket with my driver's license. (I'd processed through this particular MEPS when I was enlisted and I knew there were vending machines inside.) The reason I say don't take anything valuable is you'll be leaving your stuff in a cubby and won't be permitted to take your purse inside. So only take what you need.

comfy clothes are a must!! Expect to be there all day long and to deal with some grumpy MEPS employees. The good news is that you will get through it and you will be thankful when it is over!!

Don't take the MEPS employees too seriously. They're ALL like that. I can't imagine that's a coveted assignment, which doesn't excuse their behavior, but still...I also think some of them are a bit ruder to officer accessions than the enlisteds. I had a PA that I'd dearly like to stuff in a box, and I got the last laugh when I heard her get called out by the chief Doc of the MEPS station. I went home that night and toasted that doc with a glass of wine....
