I just wanted to vent about the situation Im in. So I graduated nursing school with a 4.00 and was blessed with an awesome job lined up in the first unit of my choice in the first hospital of my choice, passed the NCLEX accor to Pearson Vue and cannot start work because my school is lagging on the transcripts.
Mind you, I graduated in mid December. Im not sure how long it takes for someone to put my official degree into an envelope and mail it.
Im just feeling a little out of control here because I feel like I was responsible and did everything I could to get my license on time, but my slow school is actually going to make me lose my job and is costing me hundreds of dollars each day because they havent sent out my transcripts so my license number can be issued. (The hospital wont accept interim permits)
The best part is, I call my nursing school to inquire about the progress (in a polite, non-blaming manner) and am met with the typical condescension and rude phone etiquette I have experienced through out nursing school. I cannot wait to be rid from this place. The lady had no idea when the transcripts would be mailed out even though they were officially released last week. I understand that the nursing department may not be solely at fault, but how come it is always my school that infringes upon my inalienable rights and causes me heart ache and sleepless nights?
I tried to solve the problem my self and asked if I could pick up my official transcripts and send it on my own but the office person said they must all be sent at once from the school. This sounds asinine to me.
Throughout this whole process I have notified my employer and volunteered to do online training and preparation beforehand but Im just not sure how long this job will wait when I've heard that more than 3000+ are vying for the position. And if I lose this job, no new grad programs will start until summer and I cannot go that long without work and God only knows if a job will be available for me then.
I've also heard that in California (where I live) there is another 3 week wait after transcripts are released. I was supposed to start my job a week ago. Although Im enjoying the time off and break, Im going crazy over the idea of losing my dream job and not being able to do anything to stop it.
I hated my disorganized nursing school while I was in it and now they are driving me insane even after graduation!
Do you have any words of encouragement or ideas to help? Or how about just join in in bashing my school?
yeah my theory is that at some (not all) nursing schools, nursing students are in such surplus that they really dont have to worry about customer service because students are a dime a dozen. on the other hand, nursing students are inherently high maintenance worriers (and I say this affectionately as Im guilty too) and maybe this leads to staff that are just burnt out and sick of it.
Have your tried going to LTAC's they have no problem hiring prn people while you are trying to find your dream job.
Im not trying to find my dream job. Im willing to settle, but luckily I dont have to because I lucked out with an awesome offer. I will look into the LTAC places. I havent seen any hiring through my daily Indeed feed, but Ill check out some local ones.
it is obvious more of the problem is with your choice of employer. Transcripts are actually not a requirement of many employers. They hire you and see where it goes from there. The fact that you graduated shows that you actually had a decent grade point average and apparently you passed the boards. So go somewhere else and get a job if you really need work.
From my understanding this poster does not have her license..........the state won't issue it until they receive her transcripts...........The empoyer DOES need to see her license and she cannot get it from the state........
to respond to the origional question i am still in nursing school and something i can think of positive about it is this is my second time ( didnt make it the first time) but anyway i have made some amazing life long friends here friends that have been there no matter what they are more family than most of my family so yes there are positive things about nursing school
I have had to get transcripts from 2 different colleges and never had any problem. The one I just attened a few classes at I went to their office and got a copy of my transcripts not long after the classes were finished. The school I graduated from I had to wail a little while but got it. Even now with both schools all I would have to do is either call or go to campus and get whatever info I need
yeah at my community college I had no problem either as kristikkc mentioned. I think the delay at the BSN university was more to do with a combination of:
- california being in a state of crisis --> furloughs, less staffing, ticked off staff
- uncommon week-long downpour causing lots of flooding at the subterranean school
- sending them all out at once instead of accommodating the needs of students who already tested and are awaiting jobs
I would have survived this whole experience so much easier and with much less heartache if they all had communicated better. For example, I called the transcripts dept and they told me that my degree would be mailed out on such and such date. Then when such and such date passes, I find out through a friend that the nursing department has them and has no idea when they will be sent out. It would have been so much better if the nursing dept would have verbalized this before we even graduated. Then I could have told my employer and she could have prepared and I could have prepared too.
But this is life I guess. Once I have degree in hand I will seriously consider sharing all of the shortcomings of my school. The education was pretty good but the politics and extreme dysfunction was too much. Given a second chance, I would never go to this school for my RN. I will never give a dime to this school again...not for my MSN or otherwise.
Ok end rant haha not good to get my bp up so late at night

I think you have misunderstood the OP's problem. OP has a job waiting for her. However, she cannot start that or any other nursing job until the CA BRN issues her license. The BRN is the entity requiring her transcripts, not her employer. The BRN requires the transcripts in order to process the license. Without the license, she cannot work as a nurse in CA. The beaurocracy of the college and the BRN is slow and is what is holding her up. It has nothing to do with her employer, which apparently is being accomodating and waiting on her license.
To the OP - I feel for you. I recently had an issue with transcripts being processed in a timely manner and I know how frustrating it can be. Hopefully they will process them quickly and issue your license so you can start working very very soon.

Is it just my imagination or do schools seem to hate their students more and more these days with asinine policies straight out of the 1800s?
