*Vent* RN's make toast?!?!?!

Nurses General Nursing

Imagine my suprise this weekend when I get to work and find out that new policy is that the RN's will make toast for the pt trays!!!!

Yes, that's right, dietary will only send bread up and we are expected to toast it in the toasters provided to the unit. So now, I have to pick up the tray when it is dropped at the desk, take it to the pts room, take the bread all the way back to the convienetly located toaster (NOT) and bring it back.

I work in AICU, anyone think I really have the time for this malarkey??? I was really frustrated over this one and I told the charge nurse they better get some techs up here if this is what they expect. I can only hear the complaints now..."The nurse didnt make my toast right!"

Sorry, just had to get this one off my chest!

I am wondering what would be the consequences if some nurse taking care of a patient with MRSA or C-diff carried the bug with him/her to the toaster and it was transferred on to the toast. An infection control nightmare. Specially in the ER where people are still undiagnosed.

Somebody call the health department! That'll cure them from forcing nurses to go from cleaning stool to making toast. You could also set the toaster on the darkest setting and walk off to go take care of your patients. Don't do this just once, do it every doggone time. When the smoke alarms go off every morning and the Fire Department has to come every morning, administration will change the policy. As of today, all food will hereby be prepared in Dietary.

At my clinic when the board chairman complained that the patient rooms were dirty and the window sills were dusty they directed the nurses to start cleaning the rooms at the end of the day, before housekeeping gets there!

I am speechless...for once.

How ridiculous!!!

When our housekeeping staff all went on strike, all the rubbish bins were overflowing onto the floor & it's an occ health & safety hazard. So management decided the nurses could empty them, and put them down the shutes as everyone else in the hospital refused. Then management had the cheek to complain that our nursing care was behind! We all threatened to strike & suddenly the housekeeping staff got their payrise.

Imagine if we'd had to empty rubbish AND make toast - there would have been a riot....

Hey, I went to university all those years to learn how to make toast just right, didn't you?!

wow! Why can't dietary toast it on the floor. I would find this insulting.

It's the same with the housekeeping department. Nurses are required to remove the linens. Housekeeping says they are afraid of needlesticks. One time a patient threw a pitcher of ice water on the floor when i was already very busy, so i told the housekeeper who was nearby to attend to it, please. She was incensed and told me to clean it up first and then she would finish by drying the area. Can you believe that garbage? Also if you have a maintainance issue in most hospitals you have to call it in; if you ask one of the engineers (silly term) to change the batteries on the clocks or replace light bulbs you have to make a phone call to EVS first. It can take hours to get other departments to do their work but who does the patient complain to--always the nurse. Toast bread. I don't think so. You will get no bread from me if i have to toast it for you. Sorry, if i wanted to be a waitress i would have stayed one and not gone to college.

It's the same way at my LTC. I'm trying to get a million things done; a resident spills their juice on the floor and the housekeeper, who has been hiding in the linen closet chatting with the other housekeeper for the last 40 minutes refuses to clean it up. Or I need maintenance to fix a bed rail that FELL OFF THE BED and I get told "put the request in writing and I will get to it" by the maintenance worker who does nothing all night. Some of the maintenance guys would just go do it but a few of them have an over-inflated sense of importance and would rather sit in the break room for 2 hours than fix something!

You know, after careful consideration of the issue, I have changed my mind. I now realize that I will indeed make the toast, but I do want a tip equal to 15-20% of the total hospital bill to acknowledge my excellent service skills. Management may add it to my next paycheck.

Yep, and these same folks beatch because nurses make more money than they do. That's cuz we're doing all the work!!!!

This reminds me of an upscale patient requesting toast.

On our unit we did make light snacks years ago, not often but

when necessary especially a late admission.

I returned with the toast and she remarked---

"I wanted toast points"

Good grief ! My fault for not going to culinary school first...

Yup, the required pre-req class was called Toast 101. Thankfully, there were still openings! I would have hated to be placed in the Bagel 101 class....

Is Bagel remedial?
