Vent: Irritating classmates

AmyLiz, I hear ya. But you're gonna have to let this roll off your back. People have all kinds of ways of presenting themselves to the world, and some are a lot less appealing than others - it takes all kinds.

I'd swear we had the same A&P instructor! :rolleyes: He once engaged in a conversation with a student that culminated in her asking him **THOSE OF YOU EASILY OFFENDED BY INNUENDO SHOULD STOP READING NOW** "will my grade on the exam be better if my knees are dirty?" :uhoh3:

Whaddya gonna do?

I've had to put up with the same obnoxious people for 2 quarters now. I swear, they're following me! :chuckle
In my A&P class there are 3 gals who get on absolutely everyone's nerves. They're always immaculately groomed - which is fine...I'd rather see people "together" than "disheveled", but we're talking not a hair out of place, dressed to the nines, nails perfectly manicured & polished. Most of us in the class (it's an evening class) work all day & come straight from the job...some are in scrubs, most others in jeans & sweatshirts or sweaters. We're tired, old & grouchy! :chuckle Then we see these gals sitting there in class, flirting with the instructor & every one of us would like to have words with them. Yesterday one of them gave the instructor some hard candy "for his breath" after class & they all asked him to come to the bio lab after he was done teaching his lab so that he could "help them".
They're in my lab class too & demand attention from him constantly. They're always flirting, making suggestive comments, etc. One day in class he was explaining a system & afterward they demanded "private instruction" (their exact words). They hadnt' been paying attention in the first place.
One of them has really irritated everyone in that she is the LAST PERSON DONE with the lecture exams. On exam day, we take the test, turn it in & leave, usually before the end of the class. She takes the test the entire class time & usually has to take it into our instructor's next class in order to finish it. Now, if she has a learning disability (I don't think she does, usually they have you take exams in the testing center) fine...but this is just nuts.
They stay after everyone else leaves in lab...chatting away with the instructor.
It's just sooo.....ANNOYING! :angryfire
I'd say they're all in their late 20's. They shouldn't be trolling for married instructors or flirting to get better grades. The rest of us work hard for our grades & don't appreciate them trying other methods to improve their gpa. It makes us all sick.
Unfortunately there's nothing we can really do about it. Obviously the instructor doesn't have a problem with it. He buys right into it. They did the same thing last quarter with that instructor too...the only thing being that he didn't buy into it as much. He gave us an hour to complete our tests...that one gal...she never was finished in time, so we would all have to wait on her so that we could go through the tests (he didn't let us leave after we were done).
I guess I'm not looking for anything by posting this...just getting it off of my chest. Only a week and a half left. I sure hope none of these gals are in any of my other classes.

you say the girls are well groomed, lucky you! i had a class mate that smelled like raw onions and feet!!!!! :eek: i kid you not.

My honest reaction is.."So what". Why should you be concerned about whether another student takes the whole period for a test or needs/wants extra attention from the instructor? Does it really affect you? I could understand if there actions were actually disrupting class (instead of invoking jealousy) and making it difficult for others to learn, but...come on. You're mad because they're well groomed???? OMG.

um...ok. I guess I didn't really write it well enough. I had no intention of seeming shallow or jealous by any means. Cos I'm not. I just wrote it wrong. Not sure HOW to write it to make you understand...just take it from me...it's not that.

They do disrupt our class by the constant flirting and demanding of attention from the instructor. Basically...they're snobs to everyone but the instructor & each other. Normally, I could care LESS about jerks like them, but when they do make it difficult for the rest of us to get anything out of the class...THAT is when I have a problem with it. And that's the case.

The instructor teaches lab right after class. The one that takes forever to complete the exams had to go to lab afterward to finish a couple of times. This disrupted their lab. (Luckily I'm not in that one) Another occasion, the three of them had to go over their exams with the instructor. Ok, no problem. Go see him during his office hours. Instead, they insisted on doing it right then...which ate into the lab class time by 1/2 hour. Students waiting around to start lab were furious.

Like I said before...just venting to get it off of my chest.

I completely understand what you mean. I had two in my Chemistry class exactly like this. Our Instructor was a Paramedic and they sat in the front row and flirted with him the entire class. By flirting I mean interrupting constantly to make comments that usually had nothing to do with what was being discussed. Then of course there was the constant giggling. Always disrupting the class in some way. I don't pay money to take a class to listen to that. This particular Chemistry class was actually under the Biology department and we had a strict cirriculm that we needed to follow and departmental tests to take (not tests made up by the Instructor). We were not getting through the material for the tests because of these two girls. People's grades were suffering because of it.

I wish I had some words of wisdom as to how to handle people like this, but I haven't figured it out yet. I know people say to just ignore it, but that is a little difficult when classtime that you are paying for out of your hard earned money is being wasted. All I can say is to pray they aren't going into Nursing and you won't be stuck with them for 2 more years!

when you explain it like this I can see how it could be annoying! I guess just try to focus on the positives, are YOU doing well in the class, are you getting enough instruction from your teacher (if not you need to speak up because you are paying the same tuition as the 3 flirts), do you feel prepared in lab and in lecture? if you are doing fine then just ignore them, if they are causing a decline in your learning then you have to speak up, its your dollar. good luck :)

Hang in there, Amy Liz, as one of my favorite sayings go, "this too shall pass." You won't be stuck with them forever. Just think, after they graduate, these will be the gals who are flirting and chasing after the good looking doctors in the hospital and really making fools of themselves - they're just in training now!! :chuckle :chuckle

AmyLiz, I understand ya. Those types get on my nerves as well. I don't think you're upset that they are "well-groomed" as Hobbes had mentioned, but their attitudes and lack of consideration. It might go over well in a Singles Bar (I honestly wouldn't really know), but in a classroom setting, that's not quite professional. You wouldn't have a problem if they were just "well-groomed", but throw that in with their flirting, taking time from the instructor constantly for themselves, it's just annoying. If they're acting like that now in class, imagine what they're going to be like out on the floor one day flirting with the single (not not) doctors or heaven forbid, the patients! :rolleyes: It'll pass, and hopefully you won't have the gaggle of them next quarter... :wink2:

Oh good grief. OK, I have no idea what THAT is supposed to mean. Maybe it's the upcoming birthday on Friday but I have NO clue on this innuendo, and I'm usually good at figuring them out. I'm getting old, pass the Geritol! :rotfl:
