VCU ABSN Summer 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey guys!

I just started a thread for UVA's CNL Summer 2018, but I'm also applying to VCU's ABSN program for Summer 2018. If anyone out there is doing the same, or just applying to VCU, I'd love to hear from you! :)

Hi Everyone,

I finally finished my application for 2018. I am a JMU Alum with a BS in health sciences. According to NursingCAS I have a 3.34 overall gpa. I currently work at VCU Health as a care partner.

Good luck to everyone !! Just a little over a month before we find out.

Hello Everyone!

I submitted my application a few weeks ago, I was happy to find this message board as I found previous years forums quickly, but not this one. I graduated with a B.Sc in Kinesiology in 2013 and have been taking night classes since- in preparation for an advanced degree (was thinking PA vs. NP). I worked as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN office for 3 years and have been working as a Tech in an ED for the last (almost) 2 years. I love what I'm doing in the ED right now and I'm hoping to continue it as an RN -and eventually an NP or PA.

Its great too see such a variety of experiences and ages.

Good luck to all! Anyone going to the open house/info session next Friday?

Best,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I am looking to apply to nursing school in the future, specifically VCU's accelerated nursing program. In the meantime, I wanted to gain more health care experience, preferably in a hospital setting. Since you have experience as a medical assistant and tech, is it possible for me to have a chance of applying to similar positions? I do have some nursing experience, but wanted to know what the requirements of these jobs are/if medical licenses are required. Also how do you go about finding these types of jobs? I appreciate your help!

to* sorry that typo is embarrassing

I just finished applying to VCU's ABSN program. I'm nervous, because this is one of my top choices.

Aspiring33 please let me know if you received either of my replies. I submitted two by hitting the reply button. I figured they would have showed up on the message board... but evidently not.

Sarah,

I did not receive any of your replies, except for one that was a sentence long about making a typo!

Are you applying for the traditional or accelerated pathway for second degree students?

I'm applying for the accelerated program!

Well that's unfortunate: Long answer short, depends on state and local legislation whether you need licensure or not. First job I lucked out- found on craigslist by complete accident. Main office was In DC and they were looking specifically for bachelors degree graduates whom wanted to further pursue a career in medicine. No certifications needed, all on the job training. My second job I just needed BLS and it was also on the job training- although I had a lot of the necessary skills already. My hospital job only required a HS diploma- no degree or certifications. Both companies have insurance covering employees without "their own licenses". Hope this helps!

Sarah,

Thank you! I appreciate your response. I have noticed that a lot of jobs do require CNA licensure or being enrolled in a medical/nursing program in VA. Do you have recommendations for keywords to use when searching for hospital tech jobs on job posting sites? I understand that this job varies by state in terms of what people refer to this job title as.

That's great! I know people who are in an accelerated nursing program and enjoy it. I'm still debating on whether to apply to the accelerated or traditional in the future. Since accelerated is fast-paced and there's no breaks I'm worried about personally becoming burned out since nursing school is a rigorous program. Do you know how VCU's nursing program works in terms of offering any gaps between the semesters?
