VCU ABSN Summer 2014 Hopefuls!

U.S.A. Virginia

Hey everyone!

I'm semi new to this site and was curious if there is anyone else out there in the application process for VCU's accelerated BSN program to start in May 2014. I've started my application, but haven't turned it in, yet. This is the only program I want to go to! I don't know if I can wait until the end of January to get a decision!!!!

I finished my degree in Biology in May 2011 and I've been working in NOVA at a fast paced medical office ever since. Also, I've taken all of my pre-reqs except for A&P I and II (starting A&P I in a few weeks), but just a bit concerned about my grades/GPA from undergrad. I meet all of the requirements thus far, but not sure if it will be enough. Anyone else having similar concerns?

Also, would love to hear from any current VCU ABSN students - what were your stats like when applying, how do you like the program, etc.

@Lexicon, I'm sure you will get in! Don't stress!

Shhhh! People saying that to me is why I don't think I'll get in! XD

Hi all,

I've also applied to the 2014 ABSN. Just a little about myself to be fair: I have a bachelor's in communications from University of Denver, and I've taken my prereqs at Thomas Nelson Community College. All A's so far (A&P I and II with Honors), and I'm taking my last prereq, Micro, this semester.

I took the SAT/ACT many, many moons ago (I'm about 10 years out of high school); I think my SAT score was 1180, and my ACT composite was 24. I took the GRE in 2011 (at the time I was going for a master degree in communications, so I didn't put any effort into the math portion, as my schools wouldn't even look at it!), and got a 167E/147M (new scale) and 4.5 on the writing. I didn't retake the GRE for the math portion (that was a tough decision), and instead took several math courses and got As to shore up my math credentials, so hopefully that will help make up for the low score!

My background is in public affairs and journalism; I started out my career at a public health department where I was an assistant public information officer and the coordinator for a emergency medical volunteer organization, and am a former EMT and CNA. After that I worked for the US Navy as a program analyst and later as a journalist for a publication company.

I'm looking forward to switching careers, and I hope we get our admissions decisions soon!

@wilsonsr if NC were close enough to commute to I wouldn't hesitate to apply there, however I'm moving to Richmond to be with my boyfriend who has a pretty permanent job, so a move isn't really a possibility--I'll definitely keep my options open in the event I don't get in anywhere

@alliegem thank you so much for your always kind words! I'm really hoping Bon Secours is going to be the best fit, everything happens for a reason!

I can't wait to hear about everyone's acceptances! I'll keep everyone posted with mine as well :)

Oh my gosh!!!! This is going to be the longest week of my life. Sorry I know I am new here, but I finally couldn't take the curiosity of if everyone else had heard back already. Anyhow to the girl gracejeter who didn't get her 3rd reference in I wouldn't worry. I had trouble getting my 16 year old SAT scores in on time and I started panicking I probably called the school 50 times to see if it arrived. At least a missing reference is not all your fault really.

I'm still trying to take in the fact that February starts in a little over a week. :wideyed:

@steph & Elisa - thanks for joining in our thread!

@steph- what prompted the change for nursing? You sound like you have the grades and experience to get in!

@lexi... I know what you mean. I feel like yesterday it was the beginning of January and our decisions were a month away. And now...it could be ANY DAY!!! I just wanna know, already! No more dreams about my acceptance, though. :/ hoping that isn't a bad sign!

Good luck, friends! Hope we hear soon!!!!

Allie

Anyone else compulsively checking their email? I'm freaking out!

Hi Alliegem,

I hope so! I actually started out as a pre-nursing major in college, but I was putting myself through school and basically ran out of energy and money. I took a break for a bit, and then went back to get my degree in communications since that is what my job needed at the time.

I do love public affairs and journalism, but the market is pretty tough right now, especially for someone who moves around a lot (my husband is Air Force). So I'm really looking for a career that is more stable, easily mobile, and that I enjoy, and since I have medical experience and lot of exposure to nursing, I knew it was something I could enjoy long-term.

I think you'll do great, and I'm with you - I'm hoping that we'll hear back sooner rather than later. ;) I almost want to call and see how close they are, but I don't want to be a nuisance!

Ive kind of been lurking on this for a while but finally decided to post! I too am compulsively checking my email! I was just wondering if anyone had checked on their application status recently? I checked this morning and where it used to say that my application was "complete and ready for review" now shows nothing. It's like the line completely disappeared. Has this happened to anyone else? I tried calling but no one answered the phone. I hope there's nothing wrong with my application!

Hi ShanLil,

Same with mine! I'm guessing (hoping) that means that they're close to sending out admissions decisions.

Steph

I hope so! I'm getting tired of all the waiting! I can't believe it's been almost 3 month since out applications were due.
