Vanderbilt 2020 Pre Specialty

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I am making a post for all programs I am applying for that I have not seen thus far. I have been going into rabbit holes of previous year's posts for schools I am applying for. Vanderbilt has been my top choice since I decided to go into direct entry nursing the end of my sophomore year of college, so it seems only fitting to make a post for it. I am applying for the PMNHP specialty and look forward to reading posts and getting to know everyone!

I suspect that once the deadline has passed, it would not be possible. I would also be concerned that requesting to change specialties will come across as being less committed to the specialty. From what I understood at the info session, they are really looking for applicants who are committed to a chosen specialty and who won’t possibly switch interests in mid degree. Unless there are extenuating circumstances that influenced your choice, I would stick to your original specialty.

That being said, I don’t know specifically if the pre-specialty cohort is able to change during the first part of the program. I’m applying for the direct entry MSN so it may be different. Maybe someone else can speak to this further, but that’s my take.

Thank you! Yes I figured that would be the case. I applied for the PreSpecialty program. I guess if I get accepted I’ll just stick with what I chose.

anyone heard any reviews of the program? Have people had good experiences? I'm looking at other schools to I'm trying to compare.

Someone listed a blog url before about a person who was in the program. Even though she had started not too long before, she had nothing but good things to say. I also met an alumni through my undergrad program who raved about his experience at Vanderbilt. Plus, they retain a ton of alumni as staff which is hard to do if the program is bad in my humble opinion. Long story short I have yet to hear an overall negative thought process in regards to Vanderbilt, reason number 7,365 it is my absolute top choice.

Does anyone happen to know what a general class profile looks like in terms of the stats of accepted students (GPA, clinical experience, volunteer hours, etc)? I’m especially curious about the class profile of accepted prespecialty students has looked like since applicants come from such different backgrounds.

Does anyone know the start date of the PreSpecialty program?

Based on last year's forum, it looks like decisions went out in late February. However, it looks like Vanderbilt's original intention was to send decisions out in early to mid-February. I'm hoping we don't have to wait that long this year!

I believe it starts in August but not totally sure

I posted this on the MSN thread so I'll post it here too:
Just a reminder, decisions are expected to come out the THIRD week of February. I know last year Vandey had their phones and emails blow up starting the end of January, beginning of February (based on last years posts) and I think it may have delayed things a bit. I know it's hard to wait but given what they've said in info sessions, I'm not expecting decisions until the week of February 17th at the earliest.
Having said that, I am excited to almost there! ?

I might not be much help, but there was a booklet we received at open house this past October on the stats of the last admitted class. I know for direct entry the average GPA was 3.65, and as far as prespecialty goes I believe it was like 3.78 or something like that. I could be totally wrong but from everything I have heard, they definitely look at the applicant as a whole. I wouldn't get too concerned if your stats aren't the same as previous years because it's a totally different applicant pool.

They are not doing interviews this year. They will make decisions based on details in our application.

Oh, interesting! I thought that was only for one particular specialty.

I was looking at the information for outstanding prerequisite courses and I’m fixated on the line that says “an offer of admission will be contingent on successful completion of the course”. I don’t know if my course will be done by admission decision release. Does this mean I won’t get an offer?
