Vanderbilt 2020 Pre Specialty

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I am making a post for all programs I am applying for that I have not seen thus far. I have been going into rabbit holes of previous year's posts for schools I am applying for. Vanderbilt has been my top choice since I decided to go into direct entry nursing the end of my sophomore year of college, so it seems only fitting to make a post for it. I am applying for the PMNHP specialty and look forward to reading posts and getting to know everyone!

Specializes in Perinatal.

I believe that means if you're accepted, you’ll need to finish the prerequisites before matriculation in order to maintain your acceptance.

I was under the impression that what they meant by that is that you have to complete all outstanding courses before classes start. Essentially they have the right to rescind an admissions offer if they find out you are not on track to complete everything before classes begin. Someone mentioned they were accepted with 3 classes left so you should not be denied strictly off of that.

Does anyone know if having pre reqs left over hurts your chances? I have 3 left and I saw someone comment they feel they were waitlisted for just having one left. I already have a lower GPA so I don't want two strikes against me.

Hello, Considering applying next fall. Just starting to research and gain info. Do you know the average GPA for acceptance?

Does anyone happen to know what a general class profile looks like in terms of the stats of accepted students (GPA, clinical experience, volunteer hours, etc)? I’m especially curious about the class profile of accepted prespecialty students has looked like since applicants come from such different backgrounds.

I am curious of this information too! Please share if you find out any info! Thanks

According to @AmyS4, she posted on the previous page that the respective average gpas were 3.65(direct entry) and 3.78( pre specialty). Hoping this means there were some outliers that influenced these numbers and they accepted a wider range of gpas than it may seem. That combined with you definitely should communicate your understanding of the difficulty of the program and what you're willing to do to succeed especially if you feel like it's much lower than that number, like myself. Between that, actual experience, great recommendations, and showing good grades for pre reqs, that should help.

Thanks! I'm sitting at 3.35 and would be applying for the pre specialty. I know it's competitive! Just didn't know if I had any chance at at all ?

Hi all! I got this directly from the booklet they gave us at the open house in October. Last years applicant numbers. Hope it helps... and the school is definitely top notch atleast from what I saw! image.thumb.jpg.62c2f7e146c53aa5b9ef843e4985ab39.jpg

I believe it starts in August but not totally sure

I am a current prespecialty student and my start date for orientation was August 14!

I was looking at the information for outstanding prerequisite courses and I’m fixated on the line that says “an offer of admission will be contingent on successful completion of the course”. I don’t know if my course will be done by admission decision release. Does this mean I won’t get an offer?

No that just means you need to complete it before starting the program! A lot of prespecialty students are admitted before they graduate from undergrad and many of us finished our prerequisites in the last semester.

There really is no typical student profile in the prespecialty cohort. There are a good number of students who came straight out of undergrad, some who have been working for 10+ years in another field, and some who have master’s degrees in completely unrelated disciplines. People have degrees and experience in just about every subject imaginable, and with that comes a huge variation in GPA as well as past clinical experience (a lot of students had never walked into a patient room prior to our first clinical).

@ALA2020 based on what was just said, I know that means we have a good chance still.
