Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty Applicants 2014

Published

Hey everyone! I couldn't find this thread anywhere so figured that I would start one for all of us who applied to Vanderbilt's Pre-Specialty Entry program (for non-RNs) this fall. I applied for the PMHNP specialty. What about you?! :)

I just called and they said letters will be received this week. They also said that FNP students were not interviewed this year. Can someone confirm or deny this?

@ariahealingarts - I was accepted to Columbia and am waiting to hear from Vandy. I think that both options would be awesome - reputable programs, fun cities, lots to do, good hospitals... My biggest concern about Columbia is the cost. The tuition at Vandy for the pre-specialty year is about $50K, whereas the tuition at Columbia for the ABSN year is about $80K. And as mentioned previously, the cost of living is MUCH higher in NYC. So if I get into Vandy, that's where I'm leaning. Are you going up to the Visiting Day at Columbia on March 7?

Hey everybody! I've been following this board since December, but haven't commented yet. I'm absolutely miserable with all this waiting!!!! Has anyone heard yet? I SO hope we find out this week!

Also, does anyone know if they'll be sending out emails or letters?

they told me letter

It is absolutely hilarious to me that almost all schools choose to notify students about decisions via postal mail. Literally everything else is online: all application essays, transcripts, résumé, recommendations. But when it comes to the most important decision that will affect your life, let's go with painfully slow, regular mail. That makes sense.

It helps me to laugh at this nonsense instead of being a crazy person 100% of the time waiting for these letters :)

@ Lucy41585-- Yes, I will be at visiting day on march 7th :) I also have concerns about tuition costs, but it seems CU gives pretty generous scholarships (to those with need) which would make the 1st year in both programs comparable. It does not seem like Vandy gives as much FA, and I am unsure if they will even tell you what you are awarded until you accept and put down a deposit...There are so many things to consider--If I get into Vandy, I will be flying to Nashville to check out the program. I have some concerns about the masters portion at Vandy--sounds like there will either be a very long commute to clinicals, or to do that part of the program distance, which has its own pros/cons.

I grew up in NY, and have not lived there in a long time, but the upside would be I would most likely have a place to live with family/friends, so my COL would be much less.

I hope we get the decisions soon! This wait is agonizing, and so much going on in my head without actually knowing my options is crazy making!

Good luck everyone!

has anyone who applied for the FNP specialty been interviewed? I wasn't asked for an interview and am assuming I got rejected if they did do interviews for FNP.

This thread isn't showing the date you posted this. Is this from today Feb 24. Also did someone say that the Open House is not really for students about to attend, but more for prospective students on the application process and such?

yes I posted this today, Feb 24th 2014

Has anyone heard any thing from Pre-Specialty Women's Health/Adult Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Program? Did they interview? I have not heard any thing and just wanted an update. Thanks.

The Open House is advertised as being for "prospective MSN and DNP applicants," and it has portions on why you'd want to choose a graduate nursing education and small-group sessions to help you decide on a specialty, so if you've already applied those aren't going to be much help. However, they do give you the chance to meet with the program director for your specialty, so at least you can get answers to any specialty-specific questions, and the financial aid and student panels will probably be helpful for current applicants. I'm most excited to tour the facilities, which I'm not sure I'd get to do otherwise. Basically I've never visited and the Open House provides more prospective-student-targeted programming than just visiting on a random day, but portions of it are focused more on prospective applicants than current applicants. I don't think there's an additional "admitted students" open house, so if you want to attend an actual event for applicants, this will probably be your only chance. Keep in mind you need to register by Wednesday since the Open House is this Saturday, so if you haven't heard back yet I'm not sure if you'll get your decision letter before registration closes.
