Vanderbilt MSN 2018

Published

Hi! I'm starting a thread for Vanderbilt MSN Fall 2018. Anyone else applying too? Please comment!

Prespeciality/PMHNP applicant interview update (had my application materials in by October 15)- my phone interview was Wednesday afternoon and went well, was about 25 minutes. It consisted of them asking questions clarifying application material and then 4 standard interview questions they apparently ask everyone. It was conversational in nature and seemed to go well. I didn't know who I was interviewing with ahead of time. They stated that admissions notices go out first or second week of February.

Sounds great! Congratulations! Do they ask you similar questions to the one in the application questions/statements?

Has anyone else besides Rose heard back about an interview for the PMHNP Pre-Specialty?

Has anyone who applied to the prespecialty FNP program received an interview? I'm pretty sure this program doesn't usually interview applicants but I wanted to double check :)

Rose,

What types of things from your application did they want to clarify?

I had my phone interview today! (PNP Primary Care) I was nervous, but as stated in previous posts, it was more conversational. She asked me to tell her about myself and what I want to do in the future. She then spent the rest of the time talking about the program. I attended the open house, so I didn't have many questions, but I did ask about preceptorships and how the wait list works if we are wait listed. She told me they will probably be going through applications over the next month. I can't decide if her lack of questions is worrisome or promising. Back to the waiting game!

What did she say about the wait list?

She said that if we are wait listed, most students accept or decline their offers in March, and the wait list will start moving beginning with those that applied first.

Hello all, I applied for the pre-specialty MSN for midwifery.

My stats are 3.25 undegraduate GPA, 3.8ish prerequisite GPA, GRE 157v, 152q, 4.5w, and I am currently a research assistant at Northwestern University, and a volunteer doula.

So I just had my interviewand I think it went well. My interviewer was nice and she asked me questions like why Vanderbilt, what is your understanding of the type of care and services that a CNM can offer, what is your interest in midwifery and what is your experience with the field. Straight forward questions that allow you to elaborate on your resume and personal statement.

The only question that was unexpected/I know hurts me is my undergraduate science GPA. She had my transcript next to her and was reading off my mediocre science grades (C's in Chem, Bio, Orgo, etc) from when I was pre-med. I attended Vanderbilt for undergrad and graduated with a 3.25 but the science curriculum here is no joke! Very tough and I was 18, 19 years old with terrible study habits. I explained to her my struggles to find proper study habits during undergrad and poor time management skills but I highlighted my nursing prerequisite GPA (which is a 3.67, probably a 3.8 after this last semester) and my commitment to doing well. She said I answered the question well but I'm still a little bummed that this was highlighted during my interview. I'm hoping my extracurricular activities really boost my app. So if you have a lower grades on your transcript beware! VUSN has a strict C policy, if you get 2 C's, you are out of the program so they want to make sure people are prepared for the rigor.

After she questioned me, I got to ask questions. I asked about the global health certificate and opportunities to study abroad. I also asked about gaining experience as an RN before moving on to the specialty year and whether that is beneficial or not and she said it doesn't really matter. She said in clinicals it depends on the student but most often you can't tell the difference between those who have RN experience and those who don't.

Lastly I asked about the cohort size: they usually accept 25-30 for the midwifery cohort. They only do phone interviews for applicants who seem like they would be a good fit for the program but she couldn't tell me how many people were offered interviews.

I hope this helps anyone who hasn't interviewed yet.

Hopefully we'll be hearing some good news in February

I just got an email for an interview! I applied to direct entry Nurse Midwifery. I'm currently 3/4 of the way done with my ABSN at University of New England. I'm so excited! Also, tangodeux and moonpom, I sincerely hope we all get to work together. Yall are right up my alley. I have worked in reproductive health for the last five years before going to nursing school. I worked at Planned Parenthood as a reproductive health specialist (kind of a cross between a medical assistant and a health educator, with clinical functions like ultrasonography and venipuncture in the mix) for three years, and most recently worked in a similar role at UCSF's women's options center. I'm a trained doula but never worked as one unfortunately. I'm super super into full spectrum midwifery care and plan to provide abortion care once practicing.

Thank you Sierra for the run down it is helpful to have more information. My interview was similar to yours but my grades weren't talked about much, they actually let me have the majority of the time so that I could ask my question. Will have to see if that is a good or bad thing.

Congrats littlefeets! I hope we end up in a cohort together as well. Since you work at UCSF currently, did you apply to their program as well? They have a very good midwifery program.

Tango, I did not apply to ucsf because they require a year of labor and delivery rn experience :(
